Separation anxiety can result from suffering a traumatic experience, such as a major earthquake or becoming lost in unfamiliar surroundings. Unfortunately, sometimes separation anxiety just isn’t preventable, especially with an older dog. More than half of my clients bring dogs into their lives from shelters or other situations in which the dog’s history is unclear.  And a fairly large percentage of those have some sort of behavioral issue, such as fear-based aggression, barrier frustration (on leash or behind doors or gates) or, the subject of today’s post, separation anxiety. However, just because after you leave for work your dog tears up furniture, soils the carpet, or barks all day, it does not automatically mean he’s suffering from separation anxiety; he could just be bored out of his mind or under-exercised. Other components of the program might include increasing exercise levels, expansion of obedience training, pressure wraps (such as the Thundershirt), and in some cases, medication. Having owned well-trained dogs all my life, I started Better Nature Dog Training to exploit decades of experience teaching across a number of fields.
I teach people how to effectively train their dogs by clearly demonstrating that every interaction counts when training a dog to come when called, for example, or instructing a puppy how to best get along in life. Training a puppy or dog can be a most rewarding life experience; it can also be stressful and perplexing. An otherwise house-trained dog that urinates during your absence is not forgetting its training. As a result, you may actually heighten the anxiety when you punish the animal upon your return. Next week, we will examine what positive steps you can take to turn things around, and curb the anxiety. Establishing yourself as the pack leader with your dogs does not call for punishment and brute force. For example, if you are bringing in the groceries and your dog starts nosing the bags, only tell it to stop if you are willing to stop your tasks to ensure the animal’s immediate obedience. When you look at the bevy of dog toys out there – all in a rainbow of colors – you have to wonder if dogs truly appreciate the look of them.
An exceedingly well researched paper by Sewanee University highlights that even though dogs have a broader range of vision than humans – due to the placement of the eyes in the head – their color vision is comparable to that of a human with red-green color blindness. The orange vest that hunters wear – or the bright red ball that you love to throw for your dog – may actually be somewhat difficult to see for your pet. We have heard of at-home animal training attempts with multi-colored paddles that were used to train the dog for voice commands. On the other side of the spectrum is the suggestion that you can adapt your choice of toys, training devices and even dog furniture and dishes to make good use of the pet’s vision capabilities.

Separation anxiety is as it sounds – a condition where dogs and owners have difficulty being separated from one another.
I have seen dogs trying to chew their way out of metal crates and even jump out of windows. The greatest challenge often lies with the owner, as a dog’s behavior can expose the co-dependent nature of the owner.
The remedy is simple, but not easy- even dogs need a life of their own and to be on their own sometimes.
Go just beyond the dog’s view and progress to walking out of the door for less than a minute. Some of you aren’t going to like this, but a dog with separation anxiety is not allowed to sleep in bed with its owner, as it reinforces the already co-dependent nature of the relationship and doesn’t allow the dog to feel independent. Another option is to use a gate in the bedroom doorway and place a dog bed on the other side to retain line of sight. Building relationships with fellow dog owners and tending to each other’s dogs is great for dogs and helps owners manage, as well. Separation anxiety has become pandemic in this country, and the solution is simple but not always easy.
If you come home to find your dog chewing on your old house slippers, in all probability he simply finds the activity enjoyable and uses your absence as a chance to gnaw away, uninterrupted.

For example, your dog knows that when you put on your jacket, you’re about to leave the house. Dogs who’ve been properly introduced to their crate tend to feel safe and secure in this private den. Left untreated, it causes damage to your house and belongings — and serious psychological suffering for your dog. I am nationally-certified through the highly-respected Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers and am a professional member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. The scientific aspect comes from understanding dog psychology from an evolutionary perspective, knowing how dogs are both similar to and distinct from their ancestors, including the grey wolf. One of the best services I provide is taking the guesswork out while lending a sure, guiding hand in successful dog behavior development and modification.
But if you do not begin house training until the dog has chosen the living room rug to eliminate, you are too late and need to undo a now-learned behavior. While this is most certainly part of the process, separation anxiety in dogs is actually far more deeply rooted than just a misbehavior that needs correction. Separation anxiety in dogs leads to behaviors that you were certain your training efforts had minimized or eliminated completely.
Common expressions of this increase in anxiety are noted behavioral changes when you get ready to leave the home.
Building it up with treats, perhaps long snuggle sessions and guilt-ridden apologies all set the stage for an anxious dog to act out as soon as you leave your home. In the meantime, Sit Means Sit experts recommend the services of a doggy daycare or a dog sitter to get you through the rough spots.
Teaching your dog to play nice is a culmination of appropriate socialization and obedience training.
Unless you relish the idea of wading into a group of snarling dogs, train your pet to return to you by voice command.
If you have a difficult time discerning simple from aggressive play, pinpointing inappropriate interactions or simply cannot get Fido to return to you when called at the dog park – even though it does just fine anywhere else – the friendly folks at Sit Means Sit can help you.
A leash tuck, a command to cease a behavior and a restraining hand on the dog are all parts of a correction.
The blue tones we are so familiar with translate into a light blue for the dog and a few subtle variations thereof. If you have been using training aids in this color and have wondered why your dog has a hard time catching on, it is most likely not that your pet is exceedingly stubborn. Separation anxiety is such a common problem that causes much grief, and is sometimes a real danger to the dog. Start with a few seconds and then build in small increments on that, once the dog seems comfortable.
I suggest hiring a dog walker who will take the dog out with a pack, and try to convince friends and family to take the dog for a walk…solo. While dogs are wonderful and supportive beings to have in our lives, they should not be our support systems or used to guard against our insecurities. The results — including the destruction of your belongings and the deterioration of your dog’s mental and physical health — can be devastating.
This signals to your dog that coming and going are casual, common occurrences — no need for drama or spectacular displays of emotion. In some cases, dogs prefer the sanctuary of a crate to being left alone in a big open house.
The holistic component derives from taking into account all facets of any particular dog’s situation, including upbringing, prior training, traumatic events and—most importantly—the characteristics of his home and family life.
Some are still puppies while others are the proverbial “old dogs” that can nevertheless still be taught plenty of positive behaviors. In fact, there are five dog training mistakes that even the most educated and well-meaning dog parents can make. A week – or a month even – goes by and you either do not use the command or simply do not repeat the training.
Understand that the dog has neither forgotten what the expectation is nor is it trying to “get back at you” for leaving.

If the front of the body is kept low to the ground but the rear is up, you know that your dog is playing. In fact, there are quite a few easy tricks that will make your dog look smart and entertain friends and family members alike. Let us show you some of the toys and training aids that are perfectly colored to help your pet learn to perform its best. Watching you get dressed, grabbing your keys, or taking purposeful strides toward the door can panic a dog.
In fact, a diagnosis of separation anxiety in no way precludes a healthy and happy existence for your dog.
While a good portion of our clients come to as to get their dog training off to a good start, there is a group that is made up of folks who have tried to train their animals at home – with varying results. Unless the dog is a quick study or the half time is unusually long, you will probably stop the training session before the behavior is fully mastered. While some pet owners love to humanize dogs, it is crucial that you do not ascribe these types of negative behaviors and thought processes to the animal. It will not help if you try to do everything correctly but your child or spouse feels guilty about leaving the dog and overcompensates with whispered apologies.
But then again, you may be one of the responsible – albeit frustrated – dog lovers whose pet is doing the misbehaving. For example, if one dog consistently ends up on the bottom during wrestle play, it is time to intervene.
When you can rely on the fact that your dog will always return to you – even when riled up during a play park episode – then you are able to confidently take the pet to the park.
Within the confines of this framework, a dog will be either dominant or submissive, leading the pack or following the leadership of another.
If you fail in this setting, the dog senses a leadership vacuum and may take on the role of pack leader itself. If your dog has short hair, simply use a little piece of toilet paper, wet it down and then place it on the top of the dog’s head. With our training programs, we are happy to help you lay the foundation of commands upon which you can build any number of nifty tricks. Separation anxiety is torturous for the animal and conscientious owners can be held hostage by it. Mind you, these dog owners love their pets and have actually gone to great lengths to facilitate a positive training environment. Rather than making excuses for your canine companion, you realize that teaching your dog to play nice is the only way that you can return to the dog park with a clear conscience. When the bow is absent, then your dog is crossing over into a territory where its actions are no longer playful and the other animals no longer consider it an enjoyable interaction. When the dog stalks the other animal and slams its body in the other dog, you need to stop the interaction.
The result is an unstructured group setting where you try to wrestle control from the dog, which in turn tries to dominate you and the other members of the family.
Put a tasty treat into your closed fist – where the dog can see and smell it – and give the command to “shake.” As the dog will first nuzzle your closed hand, it will soon start to use its paw. If the pet issues a challenge – it stands with its head above another dog’s shoulder and is rigid – put a stop to the interaction right away. Sure, it is not supposed to be a lengthy event that leaves you exasperated and the dog bored. Finally, do away with the command and let the dog alert you to its needs by proactively ringing the bell whenever it wants to go outside.
