Sharon Malone spends her days in fields, woodlands and stables photographing gorgeous horses and the people who love them. When she left home, one of the first things she did was to buy her own horse, but she picked totally the wrong horse. Whilst looking for the kindest methods of working with Frankie, Natalie’s horse, I joined Intelligent Horsemanship in the UK.
Natalie asked me to take some photographs of Frankie for Equine Rescue and Rehoming, a charity she had joined, as they were looking for a complete makeover of all their promotional material and website.
Sharon Malone: Would it be totally biased to say the one of Natalie and Frankie that started off the business? Sharon Malone: Overall the biggest perk, I think, is getting to meet all the different horses and people from day to day, forming lasting friendships with them, and being able to work in such a fantastic environment. Before the photo shoot, I will have chatted with the horse’s owner about what sort of thing they may want from their photos, and I make suggestions as to what we might do. Armed with the information I have gathered, we go along to the photo shoot with perhaps the seed of an idea as to what we might do. Depending on how structured the photo shoot is that we’ve planned, we will then photograph a variety of looks and different poses of both horse and owner. Sharon Malone: Sometimes it is a challenge staying safe if we have a young, unpredictable horse. We photographed a lady with her two horses and child in the beautiful countryside overlooking the Yorkshire Mills. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. By now many photographers have tried their hand at adding some “bokeh” to a few of their images, and may have even created a sense of movement through the use of a slow shutter or panning technique.
Let’s first look at the use of blurry photos being deliberatley created and how it can give any image a bit of strength.
Many nature and landscape photographs have it added to them instead of a sharply focused backdrop. In the past many photographers would just use a wide aperture to shorten the depth of field, but this did not develop the points of light in the way that bokeh manages too, and this not only makes the subjects really “pop” from the image, but it also adds a bit of mystery to the setting too. The next way that photographers will add intentionally blurry photos to the mix is through the use of a slow shutter, and this can make water look like a sheet of opaque glass or it can give a runner the look of intense speed too. Finally, panning (like the photo above that I took on a moving train) is a classic way to keep the subject in sharp focus while allowing the background to blur as if it were speeding past.
I created this blurry photo as a deliberate technique when I saw that the frieght train and the moving train I was on, were moving at exactly the same time.
All of these techniques are great for experimentation, and it really behooves the modern photographer to see what they can achieve with them. Personal note from the site owner: If you are looking for a different kind of adventure in the Riviera Maya and happen to be a horse lover, you are on the right page!
What really makes the Jungle and Beach Tour different from other horseback riding tours is that they take small groups with a maximum of 10 riders AND that you have the option to gallop!
Night tours take place during the full moon ONLY (usually the night before, night of and night after the full moon).
We recommend bringing for the moonlight tours: Long pants, closed toed shoes, sweater or jacket, insect repellent.
If cancellation occurs more than 5 days before your planned arrival, we will refund the amount charged.
In Infrared Photography the image sensor used is highly sensitive to infrared wavelengths of light. Some other features of infrared photography includes penetration of atmospheric haze, dark skies, caused by Mie scattering and Rayleigh scattering, in a reduced way. There many choices for filters and cameras so be aware of what you take as there many bad lenses also which will totally ruin your campaign. A red dot, diamond or line with red “R” known as infrared index marking, is designated to many manual focus SLR of 35mm and SLR with medium format lenses. Its Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden at kilometer 163 on Sukhumvit Road in Chonburi Province, Thailand. So as a whole we can see it is better to convert camera by attaching filters rather than buying a new one. Please feel free to make comments and don’t forget to add any info about cameras, lenses, filters I missed. Here she tells us how she and partner Andy Hopkinson created their equine photography business, The Horse Photographers, in North Yorkshire, England.
With limited finances, the only luxury I managed was for them to continue their riding lessons.
She knew this, but she bought him because she couldn’t bear to leave him where he was. They advocate working with horses gently using the principles taught by internationally renowned trainer Monty Roberts.
Using my horsemanship skills and Andy’s creative lighting skills, we photographed Frankie in a unique style with Natalie. I love starting with what is in effect a blank canvas and creating something really special.
Close second would have to be the photo of the little boy sitting on the ground with his miniature pony, where he’s kissing the pony.

I do spend a considerable amount of my time working on the computer, writing for a couple of magazines and blog posts, assisting Andy in editing the photos, and keeping in touch with our clients and fans via social media such as Facebook, but I would hate to have a job which meant I had to work indoors all the time.
They can’t be because of not only the individual people involved but also the different horses. Most often those suggestions are taken on board, and we create something really special and different than anything they ever imagined when they originally commissioned us.
We very much go with the flow on most photo shoots, but there are some key shots we always take, such as the horse’s eye.
Other times the challenge is reaching some remote locations with our equipment, even though we drive a 4x4.
The photographer needs to be able to use the camera intuitively, since you also need to be aware of what the horse is doing. First and foremost, photography can be taught, but great horsemanship can’t, in my humble opinion. They sat on a cross country jump because the child, although she has a passion for horses, cannot ride. They have a child with Down’s syndrome, and they thought we might not be able to photograph him well due to his challenging behavior. She changed her outfit from a bowler hat for the show look to a classical English tweed jacket, jodhpurs and peaked riding hat for the riding photos. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. These are extremely powerful ways to create good digital photography images and they all have one thing in common – they have intentionally created blurry photos. It can give water a remarkably beautiful look, it can make a horse race look as if the horse and jockey are breaking the sound barrier, and it can create a message or tone that makes something ordinary really extraordinary instead. One of the most common ways to get blurry photos (on purpose) is to examine your background.  We can see this effect of getting intentionally blurry photos is within many points of light is as your complete background.
The best way to achieve this is to mount the camera to the tripod and take a few test shots of the setting. This is done by getting a soft focus on the target and then following it as the shutter is finally released.
It allowed me to create a blurry photo and still maintain sharpness for my main focal point.
She teaches enthusiast photographers how to take beautiful, professional photos in easy, plain English. I absolutely love that all the horses and dogs are rescued and what a great life for the animals.
We all know that white light is composed of several bands of colours known as spectrum and the wavelengths ranging between 750nm to about 1200 nm, falls on infrared (IR) band. These cameras have low pass filters which are very less sensitive to infrared light thereby allowing IR light to be captured. She also shares touching stories about her work and offers tips for aspiring horse photographers. I took Natalie and Andy, my partner in the business and main photographer, along to see a Monty Roberts demonstration. In fact, we are recognized as one of the top 5 UK wedding photographers, not in any small part because of the special lighting effects we use with our couples. The charity used the photographs, and almost overnight we were inundated with requests to photograph other horses in the same way. That to me just says everything about how we should bring up our kids around horses and ponies. Some horses are really inquisitive and want to see what we are doing, while others are a little wary and we need to build their trust. That is historical to me, as whilst I was being raised by my dad, over and over again he would tell me to look for a kind eye in a horse. The horseman needs to know how to work with horses, enabling them to be relaxed and with ears pricked in the direction you want them to be. It’s instinctive and intuitive, and along with that intuition comes an understanding of what others with a similar passion for horses might love to see in a photo. She has brittle bone disease, and movement of the horse would mean her bones could shatter. We designed a Pocahontas-style, Native American themed photo shoot with them, complete with a wigwam, and the little boy loved it. When we needed to change the noseband on Mousse from her cavesson to a flat one, her owner had to stand on an upturned milk crate in order to reach.
Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. If the subject is going to be in motion, such as those at a sporting event, the photographer may have to be a bit of a distance from them in order to get the best results. She has a monthly photography emagazine and ebooks to help you create stunning images every time. Both vehicles were moving at exactly the same speed for only about 5 seconds, that was when I knew I had a good opportunity to shoot. You can observe wildlife while horseback riding on two different tours:  Jungle and Beach or Full Moon Rides. You can tell from talking to the staff and from seeing how good the animals look that they are very well taken care of.

The spectrum used is in this technique is termed as near-infrared, to distinguish it from far-infrared, which has been Domain for Thermal imaging.
There are many filters available in the market but B+W 77nm 093 F-PRO is quite good in removing the visible spectrum. DSLR’s have low-pass filter which block the infrared light, so by replacing this filter with infrared sensitive one. Normally single-lenses-reflex cameras are attached with a filter which opaque to all wavelengths, as a results both focusing and framing gets ruined. Because when I was in modeling I would be so amazed at what the photographer could do with photos and thats how I really got interested in it. Both of my children, when young, had a keen interest, so I used to take them every week to riding lessons. He wasn’t being treated very well, and his condition was awful, with overgrown feet and a coat full of lice.
Ironically, it was at Aintree Racecourse, the home of the Grand National, arguably one of the toughest horse races in the UK. He was confident and at ease around his pony, but he also treated him with total respect and love. Because we use a variety of different creative lighting equipment, we need to know that the equine will be accepting and safe around the flashes. They also need to understand the psychology of horses and how to read them in order to gain a bond quickly and effectively. The stables where her horses are kept specialize in Riding for the Disabled (RDA), and they are now applying for a horse and cart driving license from RDA. The horse we were to photograph, called Mousse, stood 17.2 hands and represented the pinnacle of her breeding career. I had to assist her to do the fastener, as her fingers were so gnarled and twisted by arthritis that she couldn’t use them.
Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum. Riding through the forest and onto the beach at night was magical, but my favorite part may have been the bon fire where we all trades stories over drinks and snacks. So one must detach the filter during focusing and for this to be done, one must use a tripod, a lean, narrow aperture with mild shutter speed but without any sacrifice in focusing.
I just bought a Cokin IR89G and I would appreciate if you could please email me some details and steps on how to go about producing at least one of the pictures sampled above. My first recollection of my own pony was coming downstairs one Christmas day morning to see what Santa had left. We were all totally enthralled by what we saw, and I knew I wanted to do more in my life to use these principles with horses.
For family portraits, Andy was recognized as being the top photographer in the North of England.
We use special techniques we have learned to desensitize the horses and let them gradually get used to artificial flash lighting.
With approval from her orthopedic surgeons, this girl is training to be chief whip, which means she will work with the horses she loves. If you use a wider aperture then it too can produce sharp images only if refocusing is done to the index mark.
I am new at this but would really love to learn how to create IR Pics using my Nikon D300S. Me and my friend Ronald were looking at your photos and we think that they’re absolutely amazing! There, tied to the stair rail of the huge 17th century farmhouse, was a piebald Shetland pony we called Champion! You need that understanding if you are going to work in close proximity with equines while photographing them. Her mane and tail were plaited to perfection, and her rump had crisscross hairs brushed as if she were about to go into the show ring. Sometime Professional shooters use this filters along with infrared-sensitive film to obtain in-camera effects; black and white images with lurid appearance is known as wood-effect. Thanks in advance and thank you for being an inspiration to a lot of aspiring photographers like me. Whilst the trend was to photograph on white backgrounds, high key and in color, Andy favored low key, dark backgrounds and monochrome.
Discovering the story and then reflecting that in the photography is perhaps the most challenging aspect.
Of paramount importance is the comfort and safety of the horse, the owner and, of course, us. This wood effect is mainly caused by the foliage, trees, in the same way as you see the light reflected from snow. We didn’t know it at the time, but this was to be a key element of our equestrian photography, which separates us from any other photographer.
