Few things in life can be as rewarding as photographing babies- after coaxing an expression of cherubic joy - caught with a click. For the best baby shots, photograph during the daytime when there is plenty of natural daylight. Simple baby shots are usually the best; there is no need for cluttered or overly bright backgrounds. To take memorable pictures try to capture the baby engaged in an activity, or with family and friends. As well as a good camera, a standard lens of around 50mm is a good tool for baby portraits.
Babies offer a great opportunity for creating beautiful and treasured photographs, though they are by no means an easy subject!
BABIES OVER 4 WEEKS OLD - TOO OLD FOR THIS SHOT - I have had a lot of clients that contact me and want to get "newborn" shots of their 2 to 3 month old baby. BEAN BAG CHAIRS - some people use these chairs because they are cozy and usually hold the baby up high enough off the ground that you aren't laying on the floor with your camera.
SHOOTING IN THE HOME - I always request shooting newborn images in the clients or friends home.
CAMERA SETTINGS: camera settings will change depending on how much light is coming through the windows.
The Little Rock Nine are the brave group of high school students known for their determination in enforcing the U.S. Despite feeling honored to be afforded the opportunity to take the portrait, photographer Platon felt unsure about his decision, given that he himself was white and not even American, but he pushed his unease aside and assembled the group in front of the infamous Little Rock Central High. Dial Up the ISOThe single greatest photographic advance for shooting the night sky has been the breathtaking advance in camera low-light sensitivity. Gear Up, Then ImproviseGear won’t solve every problem, but there is a threshold for doing night-sky photography. Use Astronomy Software to Plan AheadYou can hope for that lucky night when the moon rises unexpectedly, or you can plan for it. Moonlight Looks Like Daylight—Sort OfMoonlight photography—like romance—can be both fun and frustrating.
Carry a FlashlightIf anybody had been there to see me out on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah the night I took this photo, I might still be locked up today.
Save the NightThe single best way to get better night-sky pictures is to find a place with really dark skies. Subscribe to National Geographic magazine and save. Print and digital editions available for as little as $12. Unless you are photographing specific products or pictures for a magazine assignment, the subjects for your still life photography are endless. People often times think of still life photography as a lot easier than other types of photography like sports or landscape photography.
And sometimes, good quality still life pictures can be even more challenging to photograph.
Despite its challenge, using basic photography skills and the following tips, you can create quality still life pictures. Professional photographers usually use a soft box or a light box to shoot their still lifes.
When taking still life pictures, always remember that your subject should be the only thing that you see in your viewfinder or LCD screen.
Instead of shooting from your height, hold the camera so that it is level with your subject. For further training, here is a video on the topic. This tutorial walks us through the process of some advanced still life photography techniques.
Here are some easy steps you can follow to take the perfect portrait of the apple of your eye. Dona€™t be afraid to keep the camera shooting rather than waiting for that perfect pose or moment because somewhere in 30 consecutive shots will be one winner.
This can include making funny faces, playing hide and seek from behind a piece of cloth, or making goofy clucking noises.

A great way to get a photo that looks professional is to get some white, grey or beige cloth and lay it over two chairs.
Siblings, especially if they are close in age can add extra interest to the photograph a€“ get them playing together, eating or interacting as friends. Turn the mode dial to AV (Aperture Priority) mode and select a large aperture for a soft and blurred background.
Not that I don't enjoy it or slightly get early onset of "baby fever" whenever I am lucky enough to photograph a new little person, but there are some photographers out there that really hit their stride when photographing babies.
The day I photographed the baby in the image above, it was actually a pretty overcast day and the light coming in through the door was not very strong at all.
Natual controlled light images rarely need a lot of post production work done to them, but of course editing is all to personal taste. It’s the first (and simplest) rule you need to learn.Fortunately the moon is just about the most predictable thing in life (after the sun and taxes).
You’ll have to constantly solve problems, but you’ll feel triumphant when you do.Sometimes the clouds take center stage, which is when you should go into lemonade mode and make what you can out of what you are given.
Perhaps you want to take a picture of a beautiful shell or perhaps take a picture of a product that you’re selling on eBay. Despite common belief, still life photography isn’t limited to just pictures of apples and grapes.
With stills, you often have full control over the composition and can arrange the inanimate objects exactly how you want them. A high overcast or bright sky can create a natural soft box effect without having any of the harsh shadows. You need to remove any distractions or clutter from the background so you can have a clean and up close image.
Mark will demonstrate how to use an aquarium to capture engaging images of ordinary household items. Use window light if possible and avoid the harsh sun because it tends to casts shadows and is also unhealthy for the babya€™s skin. Therea€™s nothing worse than capturing a great moment that is slightly blurry because the shutter was too slow.
Don't shoot next to open doors or windows that might let in a draft or have the AC cranked.
The baby in the photograph above and below in the diagram is laying next to big sliding glass doors in the dining room of the house. Instead of wasting time on those sleeping baby moments, I usually set the shot up with something in the room to focus on.
In 2010, they came together for a group photo at the very school where the 1957 Little Rock desegregation crisis took place.
Standing beneath the Milky Way has always been a beautiful sight, if you were lucky enough to find dark skies on a dark night. A glorious moon rising over the Golden Gate Bridge with moonlight on the bay was what I wanted to capture—and with the help of an app, I knew when it was going to be there. There are plenty of apps that will tell you when to expect the event you want to shoot.
Those few minutes of dusk just after it rises are the golden moments for shooting the moon because there is still some light on the landscape that’s nicely balanced with its glow. But dial back the exposure a little bit and include some stars or nightlights (like I did here, photographing a wind farm in Kansas) and suddenly the picture turns dramatic. But sweeping the salt ridges with the little flashlight I carry in my bag shed just enough light to make the foreground pop out.
For tens of thousands of years humanity sat under the stars at night (as I did with this family in Burkina Faso in sub-Saharan Africa) and marveled at the wonders of the universe.
Other reasons for learning still life photography may include selling still life photograph downloads at microstock sites or to food magazines. Even something like artfully arranged spools of thread can be interesting and visually appealing. However, if you do want one, you can find a soft box online or you can easily make one using instructions you find online. Hopefully you can start applying these still life photography tips immediately so you can start seeing a difference in the quality of your still life images. Use continuous shooting mode on your camera to capture 2, 3, 4, or 5 photos in a couple of seconds. When shooting in monochrome consider contrast; black and white backgrounds will be the most striking, and contrast in the lighting will also give a dramatic effect.
A beanbag rather than a tripod is great for stabilizing your camera and getting down on the ground to a baby's level, and a silver or white reflector is ideal for bouncing light so that it is soft and flattering.

I have seen some people use Hair Dryers to warm up the area the baby will be laying in as well. If you are photographing a baby there is usually a stuff animal or something similar in size you can test some shots on to see how the light is effecting the area and the settings you will need in order to start. But the revelation of recent advances in digital photography is that the dim ribbon of silvery light we see with our naked eyes is actually a glorious, stupendous galaxy.
Be careful when evaluating your pictures: The LCD screen on the camera looks super bright at night.
I’d start a two-minute exposure and for the first 10 to 15 seconds just glance the light across the salt from way down low, the flashlight just inches off the lakebed.
Louis, the Gateway Arch was socked in by clouds when I got there, but that turned out to be a blessing. Microstock sites like Shutterstock and iStock that cater to commercial users have a high demand for all sorts of still life, often of very simple objects, like a cup of coffee or a key. For example, if you’re taking a picture of an apple try taking a bite out of it to give it some added interest. Also if you are going for the naked baby shot, keep them covered up until you are about to shoot.
Setting up next to one will give you the ability to have a large resource of light that you can control.
For me the revelation came the first time I took a photograph of that galaxy and realized that just because the visible universe is so far away didn’t mean I needed a big telescope to photograph it. Very often on long exposures the color comes out to be something you just don’t expect, often much too warm. City lights turned the low clouds a salmon color (which I did nothing to “correct”), and spotlights on the Arch were casting strange shadows and patterns on the cloud base. If you want a sharp image, make sure to use macro mode or you can end up with a fuzzy image.
Use the auto settings to make sure you get a sharp image, and let the camera choose flash if it is necessary. A chaperone or helper will make all the difference so that you can focus on capturing the best moments. No, what I needed was a wide-angle lens because it is so huge—and we live in the middle of it. A cable release is good—and pretty much essential if you want to go beyond 30-second exposures.
Available for all major platforms, it gives you the time for moonrise and moonset for any date (even years in the future) and from any position on Earth. The ability to turn on your heels and go in another creative direction can rescue many situations. When I show young people my first published picture of the Milky Way I like to point out that this is their home.
A cable release that comes with a built-in timer is mighty handy. And then learn to improvise.
But it will also lay it out for you on a satellite photo, so you’ll know exactly where to stand when the moon comes up.For information on the Milky Way you’ll want to get one of the available astronomy software programs or smartphone apps, which are great for trip planning. Earth lies about a third of the way out on one of those vast spiral arms of stars and dust clouds.
The night I shot this picture in American Samoa, my tripod was off in the belly of a plane somewhere. They can tell you exactly where any celestial object will be in the sky, seen from any point on Earth at any give date and time.
Now it is within the reach of any amateur photographer willing to go after it.But don’t stop at just capturing the moon, a few stars, or the Milky Way. Put our world squarely in the middle of the universe that we can see with our naked eyes (it’s out there every night).
Include the landscape—and look for opportunities to capture something unique. For instance, Arizona Sky Village in Portal, Arizona, is a dark-sky housing development. Every house has a telescope built in, and one of the streets really is named Milky Way, which I wanted to show.
