To capture gentle moving water that gives the photo a soft, smooth whitish feel you must use a long shutter speed.
The moment the sun bursts though the clouds, when ita€™s either setting or rising, creates real drama because the action is mirrored on the water. Long exposure times create dramatic skies, which look like cloud trails and smooth, foaming water. Clean cloth: Even if you are shooting on a calm day, you cana€™t escape the salt spray and the blowing sand. Seascapes vary widely; even if there are no dramatic waves or skies, you can work with a moderately dull day by looking for aspects of interest in the rocks, the people, and sand. HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO TAKE PHOTOS like those that appear in National Wildlife and other nature magazines? And, it’s no surprise that one of my favorite photography sites, i heart faces, has a bunch of great posts on the subject as well!
But it can also give you great pics, like the one below, simply because it’s a dramatic and kind of romantic natural effect. If you’ve taken some pics of the Falls that you are really proud of, post them here for others to enjoy!  Or share your tips for taking the best view of the Falls.
We’re thrilled to announce the opening of our latest store tomorrow: Williams-Sonoma Minnetonka! Enter your email address to subscribe to Taste and receive notifications of new posts by email.
A photographer cana€™t control what will happen when shooting a seascape but can be observant and wait for the right moments.
Always have a filter to cover the lens to ensure that the lens does not get scratched (it is more expensive to replace a lens than a filter). Your backyard is a great place to get started, especially if you’re interested in birds.
The best camera for bird photography is a DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) body with interchangeable lenses. Backyard photography offers a great way to get outside and enjoy your habitat’s resident birds. She and her husband, Richard Day, own Daybreak Imagery and take many of their photos on their 63-acre property. Seldom absent, the fine spray from the Falls can be very refreshing on a hot summer’s day, but it can mess up the clarity of a photo.
My favourite place for a comprehensive and dramatic photo is from the Skywheel on Clifton Hill.
Beginning tomorrow, in honor of the opening, we’ll be hosting a weekend full of exclusive cooking classes and events. If you are on a beach, you can focus on points of interest like rocks, and people who may be exploring. Using a wide-angle lens and placing the lighthouse in the far left corner makes the shot instantly different.

You can even lower the shutter speed to a few seconds in low light conditions to create an ethereal soft blur effect. When you have completed the photography for the day, wipe the camera with a clean cloth and ensure that there are no grains of sand. High-quality bird photography requires good equipment, skill, patience, some knowledge of avian natural history and many long hours of practice. A telephoto lens, such as an 80-to-200mm zoom or 100-to-300mm zoom, should work when you’re starting out. A blind can be anything from a curtain in an open window to an elaborate structure produced specifically for wildlife photography.
Select a spot where the sun is behind you, with an uncluttered background, or near a window if a curtain is what you plan to use as a blind. Move your feeders close to those plants and wait for the birds to sit on limbs for photographs.
Because we subconsciously make eye contact with wildlife, even in photos, the bird’s eye should be in focus. Some subjects, such as a woodpecker on a snag, are naturally vertical shots, while a cardinal on a dogwood branch looks better horizontal. I absolutely LOVE  the way the newborn features collage came out (the first picture in the post). Several of the Fallsview hotels have great views from their upper floors as well, especially the Marriot Fallsview,  and the Konica Tower gives you a great perspective.  You can take great shots from the Maid of the Mist, or for a real aerial view, take a Helicopter Ride . Light has three basic qualities-intensity, direction and color, and all of them are affected by the time of the day.
Using a ND filter helps reducing the amount of light reaching your camera fooling it into thinking it needs a longer shutter speed. For a more dramatic effect use a polarizing filter which will improve the color of the sky, bring out the clouds and reduce the reflected glare off the water.
One more option is to choose your depth of field (by using aperture priority) and allow the camera to decide the shutter speed.
Use polarizers and neutral density filters as necessary; ita€™s far easier than using Photoshop later. Position feeders so they’re level with the height of your lens to avoid shooting up or down at the birds. When making images of birds on branches or in trees, avoid putting the animal in the center of the frame. But, I’ve never done any newborn shots since having my dslr and I was SO excited to have the chance to take pictures for her!
When you’re developing your style, I think it’s important to try on a lot of different props to see where you land.
With a waterproof housing, you can even be in the water for dramatic or creative photographs. For example, a pier that begins in the foreground and leads into the water creates a look of infinity.

Remember, photographing seascapes will not only produce beautiful images, but is a relaxing way to spend your time! An added benefit: As an extension of bird-watching, photographing birds in your yard provides another way to enjoy your wildlife habitat.
Whatever camera you choose, make sure to purchase a tripod to prevent camera movement for sharp, in-focus images.
If possible, set up the blind in the store and pay attention to how the ports open to see if they’re the right height for your tripod and whether your equipment will fit properly. Another option is to place perches made of branches or other natural material near your feeders and water features. Some pros make their own blinds using a plumbing-pipe frame covered with fabric sewn to fit.
Placing feeders near evergreen shrubs or trees will create a more natural-looking background than a house or driveway.
You see, we have SHORT toes, My Grandma, My Dad, Myself , my Son and BOTH Grandsons have the same pudgy feet with short toes. Whatever blind you go with, it helps to put it out a day or two before you start to take photos so the birds can get used to it. Practice photographing birds on feeders and in birdbaths until you master proper exposure and can focus quickly on small, moving subjects. Chickadees, titmice and woodpeckers, for example, take seeds to perches to eat them, and many bird species preen on branches after bathing. Look around the edge of your viewfinder to make sure you’re not cutting off any tails or feet and check for distracting items such as poles, buildings or lawn furniture in the background. I shoot in my entryway next to two windows on a stool with a white desktop on top from IKEA. In general, I recommend making a lot of minor adjustments as opposed a couple drastic adjustments.
If birds don’t return to the area within 30 minutes after you arrive, move farther away.
Use a zoom lens to compose a diversity of shots, both close-ups and photos showing a bird’s behavior and habitat. Morning to very early afternoon gives me the best light for the diffused, bright white light I’m looking for. The best times of day to take photos are early morning and late afternoon when the light is not as harsh and birds are most active.
On occasion, when I pull the image into Instagram to upload, I make a couple additional tiny adjustments before pressing publish.
