Skill levelBeginnerFor photographers who deal with RAW images, you’ll be pleased to know that Camera Raw has been updated to version 7 with Photoshop CS6! For those who have been using Lightroom 4, this update may not impress you too much, as the adjustments are almost identical.
When a RAW image is dragged into Photoshop, Camera Raw will pop open, allowing you to make adjustments to the raw data of that photo, and just like in Lightroom 4, all the adjustment sliders are now set at their midpoint which allows us to bring back data that we didn’t even know existed. On the far left, we have our blacks and shadows, on the far right, our whites and highlights. But even after doing that, we still have a spike on the far left, which represent the black tones of the image. Camera Raw 7 also gives you access to the improved Clarity adjustment, which can help bring back detail and sharpen up your images, without the nasty halo effect you might have seen in previous versions. However, if we zoom into the gorilla’s face, you’ll notice that our adjustments left us with a lot of noise, which is common when brightening up a dark photo. Depending on the amount of noise present, you may only need to increase the Luminance slider a touch. The last area of Camera Raw I want to touch on, is the Adjustment Brush, which has also received some nice updates, including the addition of the Shadows, Highlights, and Noise Reduction sliders.
The Adjustment Brush allows you to make many of the same adjustments you made to your overall image, but to specific areas of your photo. Lots of photographers tend to edit RAW photos, and those will definitely love the new Camera Raw 7 that has been updated in Photoshop CS6. After one takes a RAW pic to Photoshop, Camera Raw will open up automatically to start editing the image at once. In addition to Fill option and Recovery from past versions, CS6 has Shadows slider and Whites one as well.
The Clarity slider in Camera Raw 7 helps to keep the picture details sharp and therefore not overdo it like before.
Whenever the function creates too much noise to the photo in the end, that is very usual thing actually, you can open up the Detail tab to use the noise reduction function. Also, be sure to add the Luminance feature a bit to decrease the noise if there is much of it. As a photographer, the most important new feature for me is the inclusion of the superb Adobe Camera Raw 7.0, first seen in Adobe Lightroom 4, which was released back in March.
Another much-touted new feature is the Content-Aware Move, which is added under the Spot Healing brush on the tool palette.
Another photographic feature that some will find useful is the Adaptive Wide Angle feature.
Photoshop isn’t aimed solely at photographers, and there are plenty of new features for graphic artists, designers and others. One element that has seen little improvement is the Adobe Bridge file browser, but to be fair it didn’t really need all that much.
With the release of CS6, Photoshop once again confirms its position at the top of the image-editing field, with a long list of improvements that add up to the biggest overhaul the program has seen in years.
Instead of Fill and Recovery, which most users didn’t know exactly what they did, we now have a Shadows and Whites slider. But before you start messing with the sliders, you should take a look at the histogram at the top. And in the middle, we have our exposure, which is basically the brightness of the overall image. Looking at this histogram above, there’s a lot of clumping on the left side, and very little data on the right, which is resulting in an overall dark image.
Depending on the image you’re working with, you may only want to increase this slider a touch. Luckily, Camera Raw has a pretty impressive noise reduction feature, which can be found under the Detail tab. As you can see in the image below, much of the noise has vanished, without blurring the subject.

Depending on the image youa€™re working with, you may only want to increase this slider a touch. Actually, it is quite similar to Lightroom 4 but I will explain you more here, why you should consider using Camera Raw 7.
Then you will notice that all the slide options in the sidebar are in the middle of their scale to adjust data as we never would have believed before. By moving the sliders to left and right, one can deal with the dark tones, shadows and brightness.

Even if some part of the pic seems to be gone more or less, it can be restored with the Luminance Detail button. I suggest you try it in Photoshop CS6, read the tutorial all over again if necessary, or search for more information on the website to increase skills of Photoshopping. It has stayed at the top by a continuous process of upgrades and improvements, with new versions coming along every year or two since it was first launched in 1990, and the thirteenth and latest version was announced earlier this month. The default workspace now has a much darker look, with a slate-grey work area and slightly lighter menu and palette bars with sharp white text, which looks great and really makes photos stand out from the background.
It’s a huge improvement on older versions, and an essential tool for anyone who works mainly with Raw files. I’m running CS6 on my Windows 7 PC, a fairly high-spec machine with a quad-core i7 CPU overclocked to 4GHz. Previous versions have offered several different ways to intentionally add blur to your images, but CS6 adds three more. The Content-Aware Fill feature was added in Photoshop CS5, and proved to be very useful for filling in low-detail areas in cropped images and removing unwanted objects from scenes. Another product of the Mercury graphics engine, this enables quick and easy correction of optical distortions caused by using ultra-wide lenses, or when making wide-angle panoramas. The Type tool has undergone a complete overhaul, with a whole swathe of new typesetting and text editing features, so that designers can customise text right there in Photoshop instead of switching to a separate text editor.
For example, Photoshop now includes a surprisingly complete multi-track video editor and sequencer, essentially a cut-down version of Adobe Premiere, complete with soundtrack, fades, zoom-and-pan and screen-in-screen effects, plus the ability to add Photoshop adjustment layers to video clips. This feature also uses the Mercury engine and hardware acceleration, and features details such as 3D text that can be edited as text and then moved in 3D without the need to rasterize first. It now features cross-platform 64-bit support and has received a few tweaks to improve overall performance, especially the speed with which it creates thumbnails, but that’s about it. There are some great new tools for photographers, artists and designers, performance is improved and the new-look interface is superb, however some of the new features, particularly in the Extended version, take on roles for which there are other specialised programs that do the job better.
Once you’ve dealt with any major spikes, adjusting the other sliders will help deal with any additional dark or light tones that you want to bring back to remove from the photo. Of course, if you feel that some of your detail was lost in the process, you can increase the Luminance Detail slider to bring some of that lost detail back. Right off the bat, I know that I want to pull back it’s Highlights in order to darken the stone.

Right off the bat, I know that I want to pull back ita€™s Highlights in order to darken the stone. Sliders can be increased or decreased which means moving them left or right in order to retouch the photo. As here you can see on histogram, the image is quite dark because shadows and blacks is high, therefore the right part is very low. It now has additionally Highlights, Noise Reduction and Shadows buttons that one can slide to left and right. However If it’s not to your taste you can quickly change it to any one of four colour schemes including the original light grey Photoshop 7 theme.
It has a near-magical ability to bring out hidden detail in shadow and highlight areas, with results that rival those of specially shot HDR images.
First, when you move the crop lines, the view automatically centres itself on the centre of the crop. Content-Aware Move uses the same technology, and allows a selected element to be moved to another part of the image. Most of the filters are now Smart filters, so they can be applied to a single layer and adjusted independently.
The justification for this unexpected addition is that many DSLR users also shoot video on their cameras, but surely anyone seriously interested in editing video should buy Premiere, not Photoshop. Again, a potentially useful feature under some circumstances, but anyone serious about working in 3D will have programs like Maya and Z-Brush, which are far more capable. It’s almost worth taking a cheap flight to America to buy it for two-thirds the price. While imaging professionals will of course upgrade, it’s hard to justify the enormous cost for anyone else, especially at rip-off UK prices. Once I chose the adjustments I want to brush in, I’m able to brush over the areas that I want to change. Once I chose the adjustments I want to brush in, Ia€™m able to brush over the areas that I want to change.
And after doing so, you can see the difference yourself, how Camera Raw has increased the quality of the image. Basically, the Adjustment Brush can do quite the similar job as this tutorial has shown above, but the difference is you can now do everything to precise parts of the image. It also includes the new Graduated Filter tool, which allows photographers to apply a wide range of selective effects directly to the Raw image.

When you rotate the crop, for example to level the horizon, the crop frame remains stationary and the image rotates under it, giving a much more useful preview of the cropped image.
Photoshop automatically saves your work to a temporary file at pre-determined intervals, by default ten minutes. I reduced the overclocking slightly to 3.65GHZ and so far, both Photoshop and Bridge have remained stable. While the first two might certainly have their uses, the Tilt Shift effect only really works on photos of things like cars or buildings shot from a high angle, and once you’ve done it a couple of times the novelty, such as it is, wears off.
The program then fills in the area from which it was moved based on a sampling of the surrounding scene.
On the other hand if you’re a single user, for instance a semi-pro photographer who already has Photoshop CS4 or CS5 plus Lightroom 4, then the answer is probably no. JPEG or TIFF files4m 3sChoosing a native raw file or a digital negative (DNG)4m 25sConverting or saving to the DNG format6m 17s3. In the following tutorial and Photoshop CS6 feature run-down, we’re going to cover all the new features in Camera RAW 7.0 that I think are the best and ones that you’re going to use the most! Improvements have also been made to the lens correction feature, with a wide range of pre-set values for popular lenses from many manufacturers.
You now have the option to crop non-destructively, so you can go back and make corrections later. The new blur options also feature new controls that let you dial in the amount of blur and the limits of the mask and feathering by dragging markers around on the screen, while the filter effect preview updates in real time.
I spent some time trying this feature, but to be honest I was rather disappointed by most of the results. While the new features are certainly impressive, and the results of which it is capable are fantastic, the enormous cost is difficult to justify unless your job requires it. Drop a comment if you have additional questions or suggestions! One of my favorite things about the Camera RAW editor is that you can open it with either Photoshop or the Bridge.
When the adjustments are selected, it can be brushed over these parts which need to be modified. It only works well with a very specific type of image, one where the bulk of the scene is made up of uniform textures, such as a cow standing in a green field or a single tree with the plain blue sky as a background. As well as this, the Crop Tool now incorporates a Straighten tool, to automatically level horizons and straighten buildings. If there’s the slightest degree of non-random detail in the background, the results look very crude.
While Content-Aware Move could prove useful under certain circumstances, better results can be obtained by careful use of other tools. Camera RAW allows you to edit images outside of Photoshop in a very refined way, much different from the normal interface of Photoshop. Check out your camera’s manual for info.Camera RAW DialogWhat you will see is the Camera RAW editor.
Long story short, Adobe did some serious overhauling to this dialog and you will be able to beautifully push the limits of your images beyond anything you could in previous versions of Adobe Camera RAW. We want to edit this in ACR7 and we can do this by telling Camera RAW to update this image to the current process (Adobe Camera RAW 7 is current!) by clicking the little exclamation point in the bottom right of the image.New Sliders, New EditorThe panel of sliders on the right will update and ACR7 will try to use settings that are somewhere near what the image previously had.
All that stuff in the middle of your histogram.HighlightsContrast is Contrast and I’m going to bump mine up to an even +55.
Highlights control the brighter portion of your image (we’ll talk about “Whites” in just a second) and because the sky is getting blown out here I’m going to pull this way back, all the way back to -100.ShadowsThe Shadows slider is really going to target the darker portions of the image. NOTE: The more you darken your highlights and brighten your shadows the less contrast your image will have.

I also reduced the Exposure and boosted the Contrast. The Adjustment BrushBy adjusting the Tint and a bunch of the other sliders I am able to brighten and pour in a bunch of contrast over the sand to give a neat look to the photograph.
Click it to open a little dialog box of goodness.Opening Your Image in PhotoshopIn this dialog box you can choose the color space you want to work in (stay away from sRGB!), the bit depth (if your computer can handle it, 16-Bit is much, much better), the size of the image to be opened, and much more! Hit OK to commit the changes and then either press “Open Image” to open it in Photoshop CS6 or hit “Done” to save those Camera RAW changes to that RAW file and close the ACR7 editor.Enjoy! Follow Me On Twitter!Like Tutvid on Facebook!
