The depth of field in any photograph is the area of the picture which is in sharp focus, and anyone interested in macro photography (very deep zoom imagery) is going to always have to consider the depth of field and the f-stop. So, when considering the f-stop of a macro photographic subject, we must consider the depth of field, which is actually almost non-existent. This, however, does create the need for a slower shutter speed to let in enough light for the exposure. The solution used by most macro photographers is to set their f-stop at a higher number, set the shutter speed to a slower speed than normal, and mount the camera on a tripod. Generally this results in a great macro photographic image, but if the lighting is still a problem there are some solutions available. Very interesting post I really enjoyed reading it and I actually just emailed a link to your site to younger my brother for him to read. One from the biggest problems or questions I guess I have about this is just how sensible it is? The right equipment is essential because digital macro photography needs a lot of work in order to be perfect. I always thought you were limited to using a low f stop number or your macro shots wouldn’t turn out. I have always had difficulties working with small f stops and macro photography, but this cleared it up for me, thank you. Well written content like this today is far too rare, and thank you for putting in time and effort into your wonderful website.
So you’ve got your GoPro Hero4 Silver or Black with our recommended settings sealed up with a fresh battery, memory card, mounted to a stabilizing tray, a pole, or your DSLR.
To shoot compelling wide angle, it’s really important to understand the importance of stability, color, camera movement, and composition.
In our GoPro Out of the Box: Settings and Stability Options article, we discussed the importance of using some form of stabilization to prevent the capture of dizzying footage that will undoubtedly make your video look amateur. In our How to Get Amazing Underwater Color with Your GoPro article, we explained that there are three critical things that need to be implemented to get good underwater color: (i) filters, (ii) sun position and lights, and (iii) shooting angle. We generally don’t have large stable tripods, sliders, dollies, jibs or cranes underwater.
We don’t have a dolly, but we do have our fins to reposition the camera from point A to point B in a (somewhat) linear fashion.
Probably one of the most common types of shots when filming turtles or other large moving subjects, this shot is executed by getting the subject properly framed in your camera and then maintaining the exact same distance for the duration of the recorded clip. When shooting in sandy areas free of fragile reef habitat, you can set up your GoPro on an underwater tripod.
Although this shot is generally difficult to achieve with a GoPro unless you have it mounted to a larger camera system, the panning shot can be accomplished by starting the camera to the right of a scene and moving the camera slowly to the left, or moving left to right.
You can also do up and down moves that are similar to pans but move directly up to down or down to up with the camera staying level. This type of shot is achieved using similar techniques to the dolly shot, but you are holding the camera to the side while slowly fin kicking by the subject to the left or to the right.
It’s easy to be excited while scuba diving and just start recording without any thought about where the best angle might be, what the most important part of the scene is, and how you position the primary subject in your frame. Think of this like breathing room in the frame for where you predict the action is going to go.
About the Authors: Joel and Jennifer Penner are avid scuba divers and award-winning underwater image-makers. Most people think of standard or telephoto lenses as being best suited for portrait photography, but never dare experiment with wide-angle lenses. Generally, wide angle lenses aren’t used for portraiture because it can make some body parts seem unnaturally large. So wide angles might not work for headshots, but they are fantastic for environmental portraits. So this trick is done by using a wide angle lens (under 15mm for a crop-frame camera and under 22mm for a full-frame camera). Working with the principles of composition as the foundation for your photos can save you a lot of time and energy in post-processing. Most of know about the rule of thirds when composing photos, but good composition goes far beyond simply aligning your photo with your camera’s rule of thirds grid.
For example, even though the photo below doesn’t have much going on it, it does have a bit of the color that Glover is looking for.
In another example of creating a pleasing figure-ground relationship, Glover uses the bright yellow of the raft to accentuate the girl’s hair, an element that otherwise would have blurred into the sandy background.
Another composition element that Glover frequently has on his mind is that of creating enclosures–triangles, squares, and circles for the most part.
Another element that can help organize the elements in a photo (or any art for that matter) is using dynamic symmetry instead of the rule of thirds. Glover is shooting in film and aims to take no more than one or two shots of any particular scene. Waiting for the perfect shot, composing it correctly, and then limiting himself to just one-two shots takes a lot of discipline but inevitably improves his photography ten-fold and keeps him on the edge of his learning curve. This 141 page eBook covers everything about the genre even down to specific post processing techniques that can bring the best out of street scenes (& includes a bonus eBook of interviews). When shooting at night, high ISO, long shutter speeds, and an overall large sensor (in DSLR cameras) are still not enough to capture images in extremely low light situations. Although there are modifications available to make your camera functional with infrared devices, these are highly risky and irreversible decisions, so only proceed if you have a camera you no longer wish to use in regular shooting situations. White lights appear overly bright to night vision optics and can wash out areas of your intended image. White light is light that falls within the spectrum of light that is visible to the human eye. As your photographs will be ostensibly one solid color or another (generally bright green or red) against black, converting them to greyscale will help bring out the subject of your photographs. So whether you own a night vision camera, optics adapter, or are willing to have your old Nikon modified, hopefully these tips will help you explore a whole new realm of photographic opportunities in night vision photography. German-born Klaus Tiedge had traveled the world, working as a commercial photographer for 20 years when, one day in 2001, an assignment brought him to South Africa.
These are terms that refer to the exact same thing on the camera – the aperture is the opening in the lens that allows a controlled amount of light to strike the sensor and it also creates the depth of field in the image.

Unfortunately, lighting for macro photography can be incredibly challenging, and this is because any on-board flash units, or even shoe mounted flashes, are unable to light the subject.
Most photographers will also use their timer to prevent the triggering of the shutter from shaking the camera and ruining the image, or use a remote trigger to prevent the camera from being shaken in any way. The most popular is a special macro photography lens that has two small lighting units built into it.
She teaches enthusiast photographers how to take beautiful, professional photos in easy, plain English. This is because of the fact that we often discover new things just by looking at a familiar object from a different angle or focus. Do you have the eye for beauty that would be appreciated by people who view your photographs? You need to be able to adjust the camera in order to take the picture that you truly want to appear. However, it is still important to hone these skills by taking classes or attending workshops. If you have the right tools for digital macro photography, you will be able to achieve your goals and show your pictures the way that you want them to be seen. I was searching for digital photography techniques and help and was lucky to be lead stright to your site! I definitely enjoying every little bit of it I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff you post. Learn underwater photography techniques for popular digital cameras and specialized professional underwater equipment (wide angle, macro, super macro, lighting and work flow).
The following techniques apply to shooting with GoPro cameras underwater whether you are using available light only or shooting with video lights. Unstable footage is probably the worst of the four most important elements of good wide angle.
While recording, hold the camera as stable as possible and with slow minimal fin kicking, reduce the distance between the camera and your primary subject.
It’s tricky to keep the camera level and pretty challenging to pan at a consistent speed. You can create depth and even more interest in your shots when combining the dolly technique with the trucking technique.
These decisions all have to do with composition and are almost as important as getting good color or stability.
First off, the GoPro Hero4 will be blurry less than 10 inches away from the subject without any kind of corrective lens. The human brain finds compositions framed in the rule of thirds more interesting than a subject that is always dead center.
In case you missed it, start from the beginning of our GoPro series with our first article in the series, Which GoPro Hero4 Is Best for Me? Their images have been published in many magazines, such as Scuba Diving, Sport Diver, Underwater Journal and Scuba Diver. A If your portrait photography is beginning to feel a bit stale, then try this new technique. A What is close to the lens seems unusually large, and what is far away from the camera seems smaller and further away.
A For example, if a portrait of a person’s face is taken with a wide angle lens up close, the nose will look huge because it is closer to the lens than the rest of the face. A That’s just a fancy term for portraits that include the area around the subject in order to tell a story. A If you have a kit lens that goes down to 18mm on your crop-frame DSLR, then this may only work marginally well. A Get up close (usually about as close as your wide angle lens will focus) to part of the body or scenery which is closely connected to the person. It is important to think outside the box and put away the 24-70 or 70-200 in the studio and get out a 10-20mm lens now and then. I’ve seen it said over and over by portrait photographers who are used to working in studios that you should never use a true wide angle for a portrait lens. Concepts such as the figure-ground relationship, separated shapes, and using counterparts, enclosures, and coincidence to frame the best shot possible will go a long way to improving your photography and narrowing down how many photos you take of each scene. It also demonstrates a great figure-ground relationship, as the subject in the foreground fits nicely into the background. Photographing elements in photos into an enclosure allows creates a pleasing shape to our mind’s eye, which will easily fill in the blanks and unify the objects. Granted, at first it can seem a bit complex, yet the more you work with it the easier it will become. But with the emergence of infrared (or IR) modules and adapters for cameras, now shooting in even complete darkness is a fantastic possibility. Some digital camera manufacturers build IR filters over the sensor to block infrared light as it interferes with how the camera records the visible light spectrum. If you plan on lighting a subject, choose a red gel for your light source as it falls next to infrared on the visible light spectrum. When one views it through night vision equipment, it can be glaring and too bright for the human eye to be exposed to.
Additionally, adding color to your converted photograph will enable you to transform the subject into something otherworldly. Most infrared adapters will allow for an entire family of lenses, and although it may take a bit of getting used to, you might find you have a greater range of options when utilizing normal lenses with night vision optics. He liked it so much that he decided to move there with his wife, settling in Cape Town where he would be a photographer for the thriving fashion industry.
This means that the subject will be in sharp focus, but the foreground and background will be blurred.
This is due to the fact that there is not enough distance between the camera and the subject, and the flash will actually shoot over the subject without lighting it at all. This allows the subject to receive direct lighting while not affecting the settings on the camera. She has a monthly photography emagazine and ebooks to help you create stunning images every time. Thanks for sharing I just added your website to my bookmarks and will be back By the way this is off topic but I also wanted to mention that really like your web page layout a lot of sites that you visit these days are all cluttered up with banner adds and you bet the impression that the owner of the blog either does not care about there blog and just uses it to make money with banners or that the owner is really new to web design and simply has does not know how to create a nice layout. Is this something that will be helpful later in life or is it just gerat for entertainment purposes?
It takes the genius of an artist to take something so ordinary and something so dismissible and turn it into something that just captures an aspect of life.

Sure, you can actually edit a digital macro photograph using the computer, but why should you give yourself more work than necessary? Remember that although there are tools today that claim to be usable for any type of photography, you should try to find equipment that’s specially made for digital macro photography.
Some objects, when you choose them as subjects of digital macro photography, manage to amaze you with the amount of things you do not know about them. I really enjoyed reading this, I have bookmarked your site and signed up your RSS feed so I do not miss a thing. Make sure you have a Double Handle Tray or some other form of stabilization mentioned in our previous article. This requires you to constantly evaluate the distance between you and the subject, holding the camera as steady as possible, and using your fins to maintain the same distance.
We find that tilts can be accomplished by exhaling slowly or inhaling slowly (please remember your scuba diving 101 safety here). For example, you could get a really stable shot on a sandy bottom with a stingray out in the distance, but if the stingray is super small in the frame and dead center, it will most likely be a boring composition without enough interest to keep the viewer engaged.
Make sure that part of your frame has plenty of breathing room for the subject to move into as you’re recording. There are times to break these rules, but nine times out of 10, putting an interesting part of your background off to one side, while having your subject’s eye intersect with one of the intersection points, is going to make for the most compelling framing.
Think about your shot before you hit record, and then while recording, think about whether it still looks interesting. Joel and Jennifer are frequent presenters at scuba industry trade shows, and they are also staff at the annual Digital Shootout and Monterey Shootout events. But if you take lifestyles portraits, as our studio is becoming known for doing, the wide angle shots can be up to half of the shoot.
And, while exciting color and humor are the primary attractors to a scene for Glover, if the composition is lacking he saves his film for a better shot. Dynamic symmetry uses the diagonals, verticals, and horizontals from a root 4 rectangle to help create rhythm and unity throughout and image. Using night vision optics with your camera can present a whole new approach to low light photography, including shooting subjects, astronomy, and stealth applications.
By peering through the viewfinder or LCD display and activating a remote control, you can quickly determine whether or not your camera will be functional with an IR module or adapter. Avoid setting up a photograph for night vision in which there is a large amount of white light present.
The effects of infrared on the subject will also help to create intriguing aspects to your images, such as blackness in the eyes, veins being visible through skin, and many other results that you can play with creatively. Alternately, many photographers use their traditional, on-board, flash units but place reflectors above and behind the subject. Your blog layout is very user friendly you obviously spent a lot of time thinking about the colors and it show. Because of this, you need to accept the fact that other people may see your work differently from the way you see it. Great subjects of digital macro photography reveal worlds beyond what you can see with the naked eye. Sometimes this can also be achieved by inhaling while backwards kicking, but remember your scuba diving 101 safety here. Stingrays, cuttlefish, squid, turtles, divers, and so on are all subjects that you would track while recording.
Additionally, if you are filming a scene that has a lot of action, try to hold the camera as steady as possible to simulate a locked off shot like in the example below, where Joel is stationary and the school of fish is swimming rapidly through the frame.
We find that most of the time these shots don’t look as good with a GoPro due to the fisheye look of the camera and the inherent imperfections in the shot.
Using the turtle as an analogy again, this means framing to allow for the turtle’s head and flippers to be in the frame. Stop recording if it doesn’t meet your criteria, and seek out other wide-angle subjects to engage your audience. When the ocean is not their office, they run a multimedia company called Newmediasoup, specializing in design and development for the Web. Here are a few handy tips to help you make sure your camera is compatible with infrared and night vision equipment, the best lighting techniques to utilize, and how to get the most out of the benefits that infrared imaging has to offer. This is due to the fact that not all digital cameras are capable of detecting or displaying infrared light. Of course, one of the greatest benefits of night vision photography is the ability to stealthily capture subjects, such as wildlife, without using any light source at all. This floods the scene with light, but can also require some experimentation and test shots to get the best and most controlled results. While taking digital macro photographs, even barely noticeable movements of the hand can ruin your picture. You start the shot at either the top or bottom and keep the camera level and straight, while either inhaling or exhaling slowly. This may well mean a long lens for a landscape or a wide angle for a storytelling portrait.
Once you look through the viewfinder, and the IR module has proper power, you will either see a greatly improved light level, or not any difference at all. Taking his own car, he made a second trip to Namibia and also to Botswana this time, shooting animals in the wild. Anyway like I already mentioned thanks for the great post and excellent site layout I bookmarked your site and will be back to see what other interesting thing you have to say.
Photographers should know the rules and then break them carefully, or risk their work becoming static and uninspiring! In 2008, he made the switch to focus solely on wildlife photography, deciding that he would embrace the "modern digital darkroom" and create highly stylized, fine art photos of African wildlife but ones that still captured raw moments. By looking at a piece of art such as digital macro photography, we get to share the perspective of other people and that can be a very powerful connection.
Though he'd use the techniques he'd learned in commercial photography, he knew he had to learn a whole new set of skills.
