June 5, 2010 Filed Under: Camera Controls and Settings By UM3$H 12 Comments When you are shooting fireworks, there are few camera settings you have to remember.
First of all you have to get into fireworks place at least 30 minutes prior to setup your camera on tripod and to choose best location to view fireworks. In this picture I set exposure 2 sec because I was so closed to the fireworks and they fired too many at the same time and as a result I got overexposed fireworks with 8 sec exposure time. You just need external flash to work with shadow on the face and chin area, otherwise it works best because sunlight lighten up the hair making it golden and gives magical color. Remember to bring a small flashlight or use your lighted screen and make sure it doesn’t overwhelm your eyesight or reflect all around the area.
To ensure that I don’t jiggle the camera, I put the camera on self timer and then expose for 8 seconds, 10 seconds at best.
Some fireworks are brighter than others and some will go off the frame and be in the corner, that’s the general idea. I found that shooting fireworks across water, a pond for example enhances things well, as the water acts as a mirror and helps lighten up the foreground.
If the camera MUST use a flash because of the program, tape the flash over with black electrical tape, I or 2 layers.
The camera knows that it needs the flash, it will fire OK but light will not get through the tape. Take a few test shots at the beginning, review the exposure and especially the focus by magnifying the image while in the review mode.

This is done in the very few minutes of the fireworks when only a couple of them are set off to test the circuits and help the fireworks crew judge the wind. Even though there are no hard and fast rules, I’m trying to cover pretty standard settings and things to remember before shooting fireworks. Yes I said manual focus and you will be focusing with infinite focal length somewhere into dark sky. I am sure it would be helpful for many others in the future, specially who will come here during July fireworks season. Once added to your personalized homepage, just edit widget settings to select your desired view. Once you get the idea you can play around and change your requirements like Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO etc.

If you are too close, you might get lots of smoke which is coming out of the fireworks in your picture. Auto-focus is not good idea when you are trying to shoot long distance subject which is moving fast. Your email should include the title of the post you want to write and its draft so that we can review and approve it for the final posting on our website.
To make it simple, I am taking Nikon D90 as a reference camera for menu settings and options. And most importantly if you are planning to shoot fireworks without tripod, you are probably wasting your time. That will trigger shutter release button in 2 seconds after you pressed it and you can avoid camera shake. If you are using other DSLR than D90, you might have to go to different menu options for the settings but the theory is same for almost every DSLR camera.
You should use manual focus and focus somewhere in the sky, usually with infinite focal length.
