About the AuthorJim Harmer Facebook Twitter Google+Jim Harmer is the founder of Improve Photography, and host of the popular Improve Photography Podcast. A variation on tip #19: If you add flash from the camera, its cool light will conflict with the warm light of the sunset.
And I also agree with Han’s tip #30…use a tripod AND a self-timer to ensure a tack sharp picture!
The cloud type you talk about is stratus, also when you talk about shooting after it rains i would recommend that you go in search of the subset if the weather is forcast for thunder storms or convective showers as these will dissapate as the sun goes down.
More an anal retentive point, but on point 12 it was stated that the suns rays become more clear at the smaller aperture.
In Infrared Photography the image sensor used is highly sensitive to infrared wavelengths of light. Some other features of infrared photography includes penetration of atmospheric haze, dark skies, caused by Mie scattering and Rayleigh scattering, in a reduced way. There many choices for filters and cameras so be aware of what you take as there many bad lenses also which will totally ruin your campaign.
A red dot, diamond or line with red “R” known as infrared index marking, is designated to many manual focus SLR of 35mm and SLR with medium format lenses. Its Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden at kilometer 163 on Sukhumvit Road in Chonburi Province, Thailand. So as a whole we can see it is better to convert camera by attaching filters rather than buying a new one. Please feel free to make comments and don’t forget to add any info about cameras, lenses, filters I missed.

We all have to start somewhere with our photography and one of the big questions I get asked by students is where do we begin. Street photography for me is the most amazing way beginners can really get going with their photography.
Street photography loosely describes a type of documentary photography that revolves around taking photos of everyday life and objects in the open urban environment of streets, lanes villages and towns. Although it’s a free for all at times shooting anything, it is still necessary to be prepared. Key to street photography is focusing, not only sharpness but depth of focus or depth of field.
Choice of a subject or subjects for your photo walk through the streets of a village can be an effort so think about it before you start.
Telephoto zoom lenses are also handy as they allow you to isolate scenes, pick out detail and frame your subjects more tightly. Wayne Turner has been teaching photography for 25 years and has written three books on photography.
I suggest you find a subject that you know better than giving advise to budding photographers. Depth of Field is what the photographer is interested in; it is what is in acceptable focus in front of the lens. We are always looking for more interesting and insightful photography tips and techniques to share with our readers. It was a gorgeous sunset, but one thing that helped me to make the color look dynamic is that I shot very wide to include some of the blue sky on the sides of the colorful areas.
A Shoot in aperture priority with exposure compensation while the sun is still in the sky, and then switch to manual once the sun dips below the horizon. Before the sun dips below the horizon, consider shooting in HDR to capture most of the dynamic range. Consider shooting panoramas or vertoramas to contrast the sunset colors with the other colors of the sky. The sunset was a bit lackluster, but there was just enough color in the sky to add some interest in the top area of the photo.
A These are all on-location videos where you can see how I’m using the color in sunsets, choosing my compositions, etc. Once it gets dark, you don’t want to be fumbling around trying to figure out how to change the settings.

As the light goes down and you are staring into the bright sun, then you look at the back of your camera for settings and making changes, the flashlight will help till your pupils adjust. We all know that white light is composed of several bands of colours known as spectrum and the wavelengths ranging between 750nm to about 1200 nm, falls on infrared (IR) band. These cameras have low pass filters which are very less sensitive to infrared light thereby allowing IR light to be captured.
It provides a visual commentary on the world around us showcasing humour, routine and daily life on the streets.
More than other types of photography, excluding landscape, you need as much of the image in focus. A great idea is to choose a theme or set yourself a little project like finding 26 subjects each beginning with a letter of the alphabet.
The variety of subjects, the contrasting lighting as well as textures and patterns result in wonderful black and white images.
A large aperture helps when shooting in shade or lower light inside markets or public buildings. He has produced 21 Steps to Perfect Photos; a program of learner-based training using outcomes based education. If you have a good enough depth of focus you’ll find many smaller objects you hadn’t noticed while shooting.
A A good general rule is to put the horizon on the bottom third of the photo if the sunset is pretty, and on the top third of the photo if the sunset is lackluster.
A Sometimes the scene behind you can be gorgeous and all the photographers miss it because they are too busy looking at the sun.
A This will allow you to have the convenience of shooting in aperture priority as the light levels change quickly before sunset, and then you can switch to manual mode to get a more precise exposure after the sun goes down. A The sky will usually light up with color again about 25 minutes after the sun dips below the horizon. A I promise if you forget to take off your sunglasses, you’ll think the photos are all darker than they really are because the LCD will look unnaturally dark.
A That is an automatic mode and will take away your ability to choose a creative aperture, shutter speed, etc. A Just search in your smartphone’s app store and get a free app that will give you a calendar of sunrise and sunset times.
Getting the cover shot on this edition of the magazine was a highlight of my career as a photographer. A The photo above shows me holding the cover of Shutterbug Magazine where I was lucky enough to get the cover shot. The suns rays that are captured by the camera is actually a form of distortion that arises from an imperfectly round aperture (the little points that form the corners of the overlapping blades).
Even better, get one of those caps or headbands with an adjustable place to hold the flashlight.
The spectrum used is in this technique is termed as near-infrared, to distinguish it from far-infrared, which has been Domain for Thermal imaging. There are many filters available in the market but B+W 77nm 093 F-PRO is quite good in removing the visible spectrum.
DSLR’s have low-pass filter which block the infrared light, so by replacing this filter with infrared sensitive one.
Normally single-lenses-reflex cameras are attached with a filter which opaque to all wavelengths, as a results both focusing and framing gets ruined. Because when I was in modeling I would be so amazed at what the photographer could do with photos and thats how I really got interested in it.
It is great for photo outings in a group because there is something for everyone on the streets. Subjects don’t always need to include people and a series of images without a single person can be quite a challenge and have interesting results.
A lot of street photography by the more reputable photographers is mainly in black and white but that doesn’t mean colour gives bad results. I prefer to have a camera or lens that is fairly wide-angled as this allows me to include more of the street scenes in the image. A The sunset produces beautiful warm light and a beautiful scene might be bathing in that warm light behind you.

A In low light settings, the exposure meter on your camera will often be innaccurate, so manual mode after sunset is the best option.
A Most photographers miss this second sunset, and it’s more beautiful than the first most of the time! A The key to taking a good silhouette shot is to find a subject with fine details that will let the sun shine through it and that has a recognizable shape. A When the clouds are just a flat gray sheet of cloud (one of you will surely know what type of cloud this is and inform me in a comment below), it will not light up as much. A Shooting that picture, there wasn’t that much color in the sky, but it was just enough to bathe the water in the foreground in a little color that made the photo feel rich and interesting. So one must detach the filter during focusing and for this to be done, one must use a tripod, a lean, narrow aperture with mild shutter speed but without any sacrifice in focusing.
I just bought a Cokin IR89G and I would appreciate if you could please email me some details and steps on how to go about producing at least one of the pictures sampled above.
This long exposure captures the essence of the village with the locals all joining for a party near the boat ramp.
It gives you freedom to shoot anything and everything within the limits of the law and human courtesy.
Treat people with respect when shooting at market or sports events and you’ll have a lot more images than you thought possible. In what was likely the very best spot was a Italian photographer with a 4x5 and to his left were 2 other pro photographers. A If you have something too huge as the silhouette, it takes away from the picture since it is just a large area of blackness.
A Always look for ways you can reflect the sunset colors, which makes it feel like you had more of a sunset than you really did. This is the reason that the number of blades a lens has determines the number of rays that are actually seen (you can count this yourself). If you use a wider aperture then it too can produce sharp images only if refocusing is done to the index mark. I am new at this but would really love to learn how to create IR Pics using my Nikon D300S. Me and my friend Ronald were looking at your photos and we think that they’re absolutely amazing! The great thing about street photography is reviewing your images later and finding little scenes within scenes. Converting colour to black and white after the shoot using software most times results in a better monochrome image. By the time the sun came up the total had doubled (mostly Germans), but everyone was polite and I was able to get a good spot.
A You can underexpose by using manual mode and selecting a fast shutter speed, or you can shoot in aperture priority and use exposure compensation. Sometime Professional shooters use this filters along with infrared-sensitive film to obtain in-camera effects; black and white images with lurid appearance is known as wood-effect. Thanks in advance and thank you for being an inspiration to a lot of aspiring photographers like me. This wood effect is mainly caused by the foliage, trees, in the same way as you see the light reflected from snow. I believe with this shot you earn your right of passage, but instead of Neptune it'll be Ansel Adams. The light was good at that time, providing a red glow underneath, but the rest of the Arch was very dark, so I zoomed in a little to capture the under glow and valley below. I stopped down f22 and focused on the far lip of the arch which gave me enough depth of field to reach from the front face of the arch to valley below. About 15 minutes later the Arch had enough ambient light to show detail and the glow was just as bright. I angled my shot to show more of the Arch and a little sky.About 40 minutes after Sunrise the glow was just starting to fade.
