To use the Google Keyword Tool, Sign-in to Google Adwords and click on Tools & Analysis and then Keyword Tool. The time has officially come for the good old Google Keyword tool, which was used by SEO professionals and PPC Ninjas. Google themselves have explained the new Keyword Planner as a combined masterpiece of the Keyword Tool and the Traffic Estimator. Nevertheless, the Keyword Planner doesn’t have different match types (Phrase, Broad, Exact) anymore for search volumes, because they are only displayed in exact match from now on. Another thing Google has mentioned, was that the average search volume data will be higher in the Keyword Planner as to the exact match search volume data you got with Keyword Tool. So what else … YES, you are able to upload up to 10,000 keywords from their own list to get performance data. As mentioned before, you won’t find the local monthly searches and global monthly searches column, which has been replaced by the ‘Average monthly searches’ column.
The Ad Share column has been renamed to ‘ad impression share’, which will help you get potential impression figures. The Google Search Network column has been replaced by the network option within the targeting settings. Local Search trends don’t appear on the new interface anymore, but you’ll be able to get search volume trends when you hover over to the icon in the ‘Avg. It feels like a sudden drop of hope when you see the new Keyword Planner and reminisce about the good times with the Keyword tool. If you’ve logged into your Google Adwords account lately and attempted to use the Adwords keyword research tool, then you’ve probably seen the recent alert message at the top of your account notifying you that the Keyword Tool will no longer be available within the next few months. The warning message seems a bit ominous, and reactions across the Internet are a bit mixed.
The key differences between Google Adwords Keyword Tool and Keyword Planner includes a more organized workflow for researching adwords and keywords, a clearer presentation of data, quick access to some nice historical graphs, and the ability to download historical data in spreadsheet form. To notice the differences between the two, it’s important to understand how the Google Adwords Tool worked.
The research tool also let you filter your search by country or language, as well as a few other simple logic filters, like keywords with monthly searches above or below a certain level. The breakdown of traffic for each keyword phrase related to your search phrase was listed along with competition, global and local monthly search volumes. For each individual related phrase, you had a dropdown available to do an actual Google Search on the term or use Google Insights directly from inside the tool.

The Keyword Planner starts out on a page that is far simpler than the Keyword Research tool.
However, when you look at the search form inside of the Keyword Planner, you’ll notice that it’s nearly identical to the original with only subtle differences in wording and the placement of a few search customization features. Search results are also a lot more informative in the Keyword Planner, but at the same time they’re much simpler. Finally, while there are some folks that lament the fact that the new Keyword Planner lacks a local search trend column. This filter will change the average monthly searches column to reflect just the local search data. On the keyword list results page, you’ll see the ability to easily download the historical statistics in CSV format like the old tool, but you can also download search volume segmented by month.

Let’s create a keyword matrix for an imaginary Dream TV LLC website – a local TV sets retailer. The Dream TV website has a home page and three big product categories (LCD TVs, Plasma TVs, and “on sale or cheap TVs”), each product category includes several sub-categories – TV sets sorted by brands – let it be Sony and Philips.
Now we develop a short list of keywords, which includes just one metric – search volume (obtained, using Google Adwords Keyword Research Tool). While there’s been much written about on how to find “high search-volume keywords” and “develop your site’s semantic core” (I enjoy this slang, you know), a rare blogger would tell you what to do next with a ten-folds-long list of keyword phrases. I am going to show you an easy way to visualize and structure the output data of your keyword research. You will need to differentiate your offering as much as possible vs existing products on the market, so you create your own fish bowl to play in. If you want to just test a product first, AliExpress might be an alternative since you avoid dealing with suppliers.
