In simpler times, search engines trawled the web and ranked pages based on the keyword density of each web page.
Unfortunately though, this practice lead to lots of websites packed full of keywords, often with truly ridiculous keyword density, but virtually no genuine content. Even typing that, the words ‘web content’ have lost all meaning, and looking back over that paragraph, I find myself questioning whether it actually says anything. Matt Cutts works for Google and its Search Quality Team, and addressed the issue of keyword density, and how Google treats it, in a blog post designed to help counteract the problem of keyword stuffing (nicely summarised by Constant Content here).
He explains that Google’s algorithms prioritise the first few appearances of a keyword, using them as a measure of relevance, but any further keywords are treated with less significance, with very keyword dense websites ranking only slightly better than sites with fewer keywords, diminishing the impact of keyword stuffing.
Keywords still matter, without doubt, but aiming for a specific density or stuffing your content will do nothing but hinder your SEO efforts. Latent Semantic Indexing, or LSI, is something of a ‘buzz phrase’ at the moment, with increasingly complicated definitions floating around the web.
In short, we’ve discovered that keywords DO matter – but maybe not as much as you might think. Most high-quality web content will include this, as flowing, natural and above-all-else, relevant content contains synonyms and related phrases out of necessity.
These terms are used less often, but because of their involved nature, those visitors who do search for them are further along in the product lifecycle, allowing you to attract more qualified sales leads.
Ranking well in search engines is completely meaningless unless you can capitalise on it, and begin the long labour-of-love process that is customer conversion. Content marketing strategies are built around benefiting your visitors, with the long-term goal of converting them into customers, so this approach should fit in nicely with your current marketing strategies.
