Trick Photography IdeasFind out how to take amazing night, HDR, infrared, and panoramic photographs with your DSLR camera.
You can find more videos about painting with light at Eric’s YouTube Channel and on his website American Pride and Passion. I used the Panosaurus panoramic head and a Canon T1i to take all the examples in this post.

I recently came across an inspiring e-book by Evan Sharboneau that contains many examples of trick photography and special effects. As I was browsing the internet for cool photography links earlier this week, I stumbled upon this very interesting article, which I just had to try for myself. The idea, as I’m sure you can see, is to take a photo of yourself into a mirror, without the camera being┬ávisible. You start by taking a photo of your left arm, and then your right arm, and layer them on top of each other in Photoshop. You then add another photo, which hasn’t got your face blocked by the camera, and if possible, avoiding the top of your chest.
When you have your face and chest masked how you want it, you move this layer over the top of your body into the right place. If you’ve been really careful when taking the photos, then this should be fairly easy to complete. As I said, the guy who wrote the original article probably did a better job than me, so check it out here, but I wanted to share it with you anyway.

The second edition of Trick Photography and Special Effects includes 100 new e-book pages (300 pages total) and 9 full hours of video tutorials. If you have been wanting to learn any of these techniques, this guide is a good place to start. I have done painting with light for 2 or 3 years and I learned many new creative concepts I had not seen demonstrated before in terms of luminance of objects and secondary light passes. Hey if I buy it from my iPad and afterwards later I want it in my laptop also, then will I be able to get it?? There are essentially four things that you will need to create spectacular trick photos: a subject, a light source, your camera, and a tripod. We are always looking for more interesting and insightful photography tips and techniques to share with our readers.
After attending a session with Riedel glassware I realized that most people have been clinking wine glasses wrong. If you’re already laughing at how ridiculous this is, imagine yourself holding a fine crystal glass filled with very expensive wine. The entire room looks at your mishap (in my case the entire room would be two kittens and a toy dinosaur) and remarks at how reckless you are. Join thousands of enthusiasts who subscribe to the most entertaining weekly wine newsletter online. The photographs in the eBook look like HDR images but they are created in quite a different way. Vizcaya Museum & Gardens features a Main House, ten acres of formal gardens, and a rockland hammock (native forest). Since I have also become obsessed with infrared, all of the photographs were taken with a Hoya 58mm RM-72 Infrared Filter. Hugin was even able to stitch together standard panoramas that Photoshop CS5 failed to stitch together properly.
You then take a layer mask to remove half of the top photo (the right arm photo), so that the left arm comes through before. The eBook is in PDF format so it is perfect for tablet devices or can be read on any computer.

Upon clinking, the rim of the glass shatters and the wine spills out with broken crystal glass everywhere. The idea is that you aim your wine glass bell (the big round part in the middle) to the bell of your clinking-buddy’s wine glass. Small sections of the subject are illuminated from different directions then merged together with Photoshop.
Crafting Reality: Painting with Light is an extremely thorough how-to book and I highly recommend it. If your camera records the light produced by the remote, you can take the next step – buy an IR filter. A little bit of clone tool here and there, and pinch of content-aware fill later, I’m able to make mine come out perfect. This is the best bang for your buck for understanding the principals of visual effects and compositing. Why not learn to clink wine glasses a better way that not only avoids breakage but also sounds awesome! Eric goes into detail about how to take the photographs and the settings to use in Photoshop. This works best with real hand or machine blown crystal glass from a company like Riedel, Schott Zwiesel, or Zalto.
The reason why you need a small aperture is because you want both of your participants to be in sharp focus.
You also get a bonus e-book covering photography fundamentals, flashes, lenses, and Photoshop plugins as well as how to make money with photography. Expect your exposures to be extremely long because the filter blocks out almost all visible light.
