The minute Samsung started crowing about the Galaxy S5 being waterproof, you just knew some maniacs would try putting it to the test by swimming with the device. In the video, TechSmartt dropped the Galaxy S5 into a pool’s shallow end at let it sit there for roughly an hour before hoisting it up. Next up, TechSmartt stuffed the Galaxy S5 into a pair of jeans and put them both into the washing machine for a 50-minute cycle. This is the second major torture session that TechSmartt has put the Galaxy S5 through in recent days. Remember last week when Piper Jaffray said the price hike would have minimal impact on subs and NFLX could even push it to $15? HTC and Samsung have gone two very different directions with the designs for their flagship phones. HTC has worked hard to craft a device that looks and feels premium, putting appearance and personality above all else.
Samsung foregoes some luxury for the sake of mass marketability, attempting to build the one-size-fits-all device that everybody loves. That flexibility will help Samsung in other areas, but from a design perspective the HTC One M8 is a notch above all of the competition, including Samsung’s S5. Whether you’re talking about phones, TVs, computers, or even touch panels on household appliances, displays are something that Samsung always seems to get right. This is a matter of preference of course and the choice is made much more difficult when comparing the phones side by side. The Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 both run Android 4.4 KitKat and each overlay their own custom UI- the S5 with Touchwiz and the One M8 with Sense 6. For home screen experiences HTC brings Blinkfeed to the table while Samsung offers My Magazine. The prerequisite of doing anything with your photos is having good photos you want to do something with. To top it all off, the HTC One M8 has a 5MP front facing camera that ensures selfie snappers are delighted. Travelers using a mobile phone as their only camera might disagree, but for its consistency, outrageously fun duo cam integration, and attention to selfie detail, I’m giving this highly debated category to the HTC One M8. The name multimedia inherently dictates that more than one form of media is being discussed.
Most phone’s these days have an earpiece at the top front of the phone and speakers either somewhere on the side or on the back. You’ll get okay sound quality with the Galaxy S5 but the further you turn up the volume the more tinny and shaky it sounds. This is a hard category to pin down, not only because benchmarks between the two devices vary based on what benchmarks you choose, but also because manufacturers have begun adjusting their hardware to specifically perform better in benchmarks.
Based on my experience using both devices extensively for over a week, they were both top notch. That being said, while I experienced virtually no hiccups from the Galaxy S5, I spotted a few roadbumps while using the HTC One M8. In the end, both devices performed so well that the winner came down to a rather nitpicky decision, but I’m comfortable picking the Galaxy S5 since my experience with its hardware performance was close to flawless.
Both devices run a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with the Galaxy S5’s being a tiny bit beefier. Where HTC picks up the win on design it simultaneously picks up the loss on battery life, but not because it didn’t perform well. I preferred Samsung’s Power Saving Mode which offered two different severity levels as presets, especially enjoying the option to remove the backlit buttons and turning the phone gray scale. Samsung’s back cover is removeable, so should I start to use the phone more heavily and require a bigger battery, an extended battery will likely be available. Some features simply don’t fit into a category and in typical Samsung fashion, there are a bunch in the Galaxy S5.
The home button now doubles as a finger sensor, allowing you to lock your screen and other areas of your phone by sliding your finger over the home button and scanning your fingerprint. The finger scanner and heart rate monitor are cool wildcards, but likely limited in use to a select percentage of the population. The Galaxy S4 is IP67 certified which means you can use it in the rain, drop it in the toilet, use it in the shower, even submerge it in a couple feet of water while still recording video (don’t go any deeper)!
Declaring a decisive winner is up to you, not me, as you’ll weigh the value of the above categories far differently based on your preferences and circumstances. If you fit into a combination of the above, walk into a store, play with each, and make your decision with hands-on experience. Not long ago, it was tipped that Google could come up with a new design for the software home button that is featured on devices that don’t have a physical counterpart. By now, you’ve probably spent a good enough time catching everything there is to catch in Pokemon Go. Moans and groans around the world were heard when Niantic started bringing the hammer down on great third-party Pokemon GO companion apps like these.
The latest version of the Android Wear app is notifying users of the Together watch face that Google will officially be shutting it down on Sept 30th, along with the reason why they’re doing it.
There is no doubt that the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are the sexiest Galaxy devices yet. When we reviewed the Samsung Galaxy S5, water resistance was one of my favorite new features. The device slightly dumbed down the specs; for example, in exchange for getting an IP67 water resistant device you also get a chunkier, heavier phone with hardware buttons and an 8MP camera instead of a 13MP camera. Whatever the case may be it seems the Active brand performed well enough to live on as Samsung released its sequel the following year. Despite having a IP67 water resistant flagship in the Galaxy S5, Samsung pushed forward and announced the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active.
Once again, they slightly dumbed down the specs, made it chunkier with more rugged material, and added some extra Ingress protection. Both the S5 and S5 Active were IP67 water resistant, but only the S5 Active enjoyed drop resistance (up to 4 feet), dust, temperature, and humidity resistance. Speaking of crazy designs, Samsung’s newest generation of flagship devices is quite the divergence from their typical hardware. It seems Samsung focused their time and energy making the Galaxy S6 the most premium feeling device possible. Some people are freaking out over the lack of water resistance but Samsung made a clear decision to focus more on being premium.

However, I believe the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Active will have more difference between them than their sibling counterparts. Whatever the case may be, Samsung may have created a golden sales opportunity by making this decision. Whereas in the past Samsung had two very similar products with one primary differentiating factor, the new Galaxy S6 Active would be a completely different product than the Galaxy S6 and offer an entirely different set of features and benefits from a hardware perspective. I’d be really excited to see the Galaxy S6 Active simply be the natural progression of the previous Galaxy S5, sticking with the plastic and Ingress protection and continuing to add ruggedized features. Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Active loses the fingerprint reader in favor of tactile buttons and a solid plastic shell. While we liked last year’s Galaxy S4 Active, Samsung’s take on a ruggedized version of its flagship Galaxy S4 handset, it felt like a slight step down from the Galaxy S4, with a lower-resolution camera, a non-AMOLED screen, and shorter battery life.
With the Galaxy S5 Active, Samsung delivers a phone that’s much more akin to the internals of the standard S5, and all the superphone goodness that entails.
Instead, Samsung adds large, tactile buttons that are super-easy to find, and adds a blue “Active” key on the left side that launces a handy Activity Zone app or launches the camera (or any other app you choose). The Galaxy S5 Active certainly isn’t as pretty as the standard S5 (or as thin, or as light), but it’s far from bulky. The standard GS5 is all about swooping lines and rounded corners, but the S5 Active has flatter, almost iPhone-like edges, with extra, ruggedized plastic bumpers on the corners that hold up. Aesthetically, the phone reminds us of Panasonic’s Toughbook laptop line, with some Droid Razr thrown in for good measure.
Worse, with the speaker (which produces passible, though not exceptional audio) cranked up high, the entire back of the S5 active vibrates, making the phone uncomfortable to hold—especially with one hand. All the buttons on the phone are very tactile, so you should have no problems locating them with a gloved hand.
While the backside of the GS5 Active looks like it’s bolted on, it actually peels off with the help of a small divot above the camera, revealing a removable battery and a MicroSD card slot above the SIM sled. In this particular case, the maniacs in question are the team at TechSmartt who have filmed a video of the Galaxy S5 being dunked underwater for a prolonged period of time and also of the Galaxy S5 being put through a washing machine. Incredibly, the Galaxy S5 still worked perfectly well afterward and the only noticeable problem with the device was that its display didn’t respond as well to touch commands because it was covered in water droplets.
Last week, TechSmartt dropped the Galaxy S5 from 10 feet in the air and then ran over it with an SUV and the phone still worked perfectly fine. That all starts with a metal unibody frame that looks beautiful, feels sturdy, and has some nice heft. The key difference is the outrageous level of brightness, vibrancy, and contrast found on the Galaxy S5 display. In reality, whichever phone you choose to use, you’d be incredibly happy with the display.
Taking advice from users longing for more of a stock Android experience, each company has vowed to tone down the bloat while still delivering added value through unique integrations throughout the software.
They both let you customize an easily accessed feed with social network accounts and news content, but Blinkfeed is much more robust while My Magazine seems a bit half baked.
Samsung has thankfully buried some of its highly touted settings of generations past, but they’re mostly still available, which makes exploring and finding the settings you want a bit of a chore. In addition to a slight delay when opening native apps like dialer and contacts (we’re talking fractions of a second), the experience can seem scattered, with incomplete experiences in some areas and too many options in others. Mobile cameras have become somewhat of a megapixel marketing war with consumers crowning the bigger number the better camera. Really, megapixels determine how many pixels are in your photos, which directly correlates to their size (in dimensions and file size). In perfect, sunny conditions, the Galaxy S5 probably slightly edges the One M8 in terms of photo quality. If you do too, you won’t find a phone whose speakers sound more loud and full than the BoomSound speakers on the HTC One M8.
Sometimes it’s sitting on the couch playing an immersive game like Dead Trigger 2 and the sound effects bring excitement to the action. That being said, Samsung’s audio quality while headphones are plugged in or while using bluetooth is very good. That’s good for you to know and you should calculate it into your personal buying decision.
Not to mention, how you use your phone in real-life may vary from what the benchmark scores for and taking it one step further, how YOU use your phone will differ from me- and thus we could have totally different experiences. They both were as swift and smooth as I’d expect from flagship phones by top manufacturers.
It’s quite possible that the blame should be placed on the shoulders of an app developer whose bad coding caused something flukey.
Stock Android evangelists may notice a slight delay (fractions of a second) in navigating, which can likely be blamed on Touchwiz. Both phones had above average battery life that usually lasted me through the day without concern.
Only this time, instead of packing all the fun into the Software, Samsung has done some really interesting things on the hardware side. Activate it through Samsung’s S Health app, which is becoming quite the lifestyle hub, and it can read your heart rate by placing your finger over a grooved indentation just below the rear camera.
However, one new Samsung hardware feature takes the wildcard section all on its own: weatherproofing. Their pros and cons come in different areas, making each phone suitable for different types of people.
I’m a Galaxy Note 3 owner and would love try something new while I keep one eye on the upcoming Galaxy Note 4.

If you want further counseling, don’t trust one sales person at random, instead head to Android Forums for advice from thousands. You also know that it’s getting much more difficult to play the game without purchasing in-game upgrades. As much as most of you want to believe the company is the big bad wolf, their reasoning is neatly summed up with 1 telling image. You see, they already had the Samsung Galaxy S5 and had accomplished the feat of making it IP67 water resistant. There wouldn’t be any need for the S5 Active now because Samsung had solved the problem by making its flagship phone waterproof! To see a Galaxy S6 Active would not be a surprise and to the contrary, it’s something you should expect.
Whereas in the past the S4 Active and S5 Active were merely ruggedized version of almost the same device, Samsung now has the opportunity to let the S5 Active stand out. But for those who are truly active, the fact that you have to stand still for several seconds (and try not to make noise) when you’re using it will make it frustrating.
But the S5 Active is also available in Ruby Red and Camo Green, so you can make sure your phone matches your ensemble, whether you’re picking out a chiffon dress for the dance or putting on chest-high waders to go duck hunting. The power button is located about a third of the way down the right side, while the volume rocker and Active key are located in a similar spot on the left edge.
We still don’t like the fiddly nature of port doors and wish someone would find a way to make an open USB port waterproof. The buyer is to bare the return shipping cost, based on the condition of the item(s) received.
Then, open the DHgate APP, and click on "Shopping Cart" or "My favorites" to find the product(s) you added.
This means that you can conceivably take a bath or even go swimming with your Galaxy S5 if you want and not have to worry about it breaking or electrocuting you. However, once it got this water out and rebooted the phone, the device worked perfectly again.
The Galaxy S5 looks more typical, is covered in plastic, has some questionable finishes, and a removable battery cover.
For some people the One M8 screen might be preferred because it looks less artificial with more natural colors.
Both the One M8 and Galaxy S5 have market leading screens, but I heavily prefer the latter above all else.
Thankfully you have the option to remove both- but give Blinkfeed a chance, it works well enough to consider keeping onboard. If Samsung can choose focus areas and reinvest their energy to initiatives they deem most important, they’ll be doing themselves and their customers a huge favor. If you chose the better camera based purely on megapixels, Samsung would be crowned prince automatically, besting HTC by a megapixel count of 16MP to 4MP. The majority of photos taken with your phone are shared only on the web, which means even the 2688 by 1520 pictures taken with the One M8’s 4MP camera are too big for Facebook. As soon as those conditions change it’s the HTC One M8 camera that is better able to handle adversity. The HTC One M8 meanwhile boasts dual front facing speakers that not only look epic, but sound epic.
Sometimes it’s with a group of friends with whom I want to share a Youtube video without cupping the speaker and oddly switching between looking and listening, looking and listening.
The S5 and One M8 now both have special modes you can place your phone in for when battery life is at a premium and you desperately need to conserve. Thankfully, a newly-leaked animation shows it’s not as bad as we thought it would be. One could speculate why water resistance was removed, make various comparisons to Apple, and discuss the technological difficulties in engineering such a product, but for the sake of this article- let’s not. But if you’re the type who may be using the S5 Active while wearing gloves or with dirty fingers, you probably won’t miss it much.
The tactile Home, Back, and Menu keys below the screen take the most getting used to—especially if you’re an experienced Android user.
But at least the door on the S5 Active feels more durable than the one found on the Xperia Z1S.
What is more, cell phones cases is specifically designed to shelter your devices dust, shock, scratches and bumps and other daily damage. What is more, custom phone cases is specifically designed to shelter your devices dust, shock, scratches and bumps and other daily damage. Amazingly, after the full cycle finished, the Galaxy S5 still ran just as well as it did when it come out of the pool. If that floats your boat, go for it- but I’m personally picking the S5 and sticking with it. Right now they seem undecided on far too much, which provides HTC with the opportunity to walk away with the software category. The Galaxy S5 is the only one between the two that can perform this luxury with any significant quality.
I want consistency in a smartphone camera and if I wanted a great camera for traveling I’d opt for a DLSR, point-and-shoot, or Galaxy Camera before either of these.
The duo cam is not a gimmick… it works amazingly well and is an absolute blast to use.
Other times it’s just talking to someone on speaker phone and expecting good sound quality.
So if you fear dropping your phone in the pool (or the toilet) this summer, the S5 Active isn’t your only option.
But after a day or so, we found ourselves liking them, as they let us easily mash the Home or Back button before we even brought the screen up to our eyes.
