The Lumia 1020 features innovative technologies that should make it a superb camera phone  for low-light shooting. The thing is that the Nokia Lumia 1020 is not a DSLR camera, it doesn’t have the same APS-C sensor size as my Nikon D7000 DSLR nor do I have the option to mount very fast lenses.
Nokia Lumia 1020 features a wide range of features that overall makes the Lumia 1020 camera one of its kind, even vetter than the  808 PureView camera. All those features work in synergy in order to give photographers an advanced photographic tool, making the Nokia Lumia 1020 a unique mobile photographic tool among all other phones. Let’s go over the benefits of the specs mentioned above and see how each of the specs can contribute to better image quality and improved performance in low-light situations.
The result is a very powerful integrated processing operation that can manage Billion calculations per second.
This sensor is much larger than what you get in a conventional compact camera and larger than all the other sensor’s on any mobile phone on the market (except the 808 PureView of course). Carl Zeiss Optics – superior high quality optics for tack sharp images, high contrast, excellent color reproduction with minimal distortions and image aberrations. Due to the smaller sensor (higher crop factor), the Lumia 1020 lens aperture area is 19% smaller than the 808 PureView. Optical Image Stabilization – Nokia has further improved the optical image stabilization on the Lumia 1020. Optical image stabilization was not designed to freeze the action, for that you need a faster shutter speed. This opens a whole new world of creative possibilities for the photographer, and offer the photographer much better control of the exposure. As you can see from the image above from the Lumia 1020 launch event in New York, the Lumia 1020 Xenon flash does a much better job in freezing the action compared to the iPhone 5 and Smasung Galaxy S4. Full Manual Control – last but not least is the ability to have full control over the exposure. The better control you have over the camera settings, the better you can adjust the camera to produce the desired results.
As an experienced photographer,  It would be great if there was an option to shoot in RAW file format, rather than letting the camera apply all the settings toe the image in a destructive manner (un-reversible) in JPEG.
Nokia has released several sample images and I will use those to analyze the image quality of the Lumia 1020. You can see that a long exposure shot produces visible image noise , and that’s expected of course.
As you can see, the Nokia Lumia 1020 features a wide range of features that make it a great camera for low light shooting.
In the part 2 we’ll take a look at some high ISO sample images, analyze those and see how the Nokia Lumia 1020 compares to other popular camera phone out there.

Taking photos of light trails may seem difficult, but it’s easier than expected and is based on a lot of trial and error. Light trails are basically long exposure shots that take place around moving sources of light.
For a long exposure shot (the basis of this tutorial), you will need a camera that has some control over the exposure settings, such as changing the shutter speeds. You will also need a tripod for this, as having a camera handheld with long shutter speeds will make it near impossible to compose a good looking shot, without everything being blurry. Two more things that can really help, but are not needed, are a remote shutter release, and also a lens hood, which can help block surrounding ambient light (such as if you’re in the city or near street lights).
For our examples, let’s assume we want to take long exposure light trails of car lights. Next, set your aperture (increase your f-stop number) and take test shots and see how they turn out. First, always shoot in RAW mode (as you always should anyway) so most adjustments will be easily corrected later on. Next, you may need to use manual focus, as it can sometimes be hard to focus in the pitch black dark. I hope this tutorial has helped you out, answered all your questions, and that you come up with some great light trail shots! Nikon has released a set of sample photographs to give pixel-peepers a first look at the new D5200’s image quality.

Nikon is using these sample photographs to show the image quality that can be achieved by ordinary consumers.
Update: Nikon France has created a Flickr set containing 38 sample photos, including low-light ones.
The folks at National Geographic just did a solid favor for all the adventurous outdoor photographers out there. After a lot of speculation and a juicy tidbit here and there, a more complete spec list and first photo of the much-anticipated Canon 5D Mark IV has leaked. Recently I got a message from a person who said that they liked my pictures, but unfortunately they don’t have a "photographic eye." This inspired me to write the following article about basic aesthetics and their relationship to photography.
The multi-aperture computational camera is an exciting technology that's emerging in the world of photography, and it appears that Nikon wants in.
VSCO today announced the launch of its new Open Studio, a free-to-use massive studio space in New York City. If you wanna capture quality product photos on the cheap, this short little DIY tutorial is going to be a great resource. If you're not comfortable with the idea of uploading photos to the Web with geotag data baked into the file, there are some easy ways you can scrub the data to protect your privacy. This photo shows what Sports Illustrated photographer Simon Bruty packed for the Rio 2016 Olympic games, the 8th Summer Games he has covered. Lightroom is a very powerful tool, and this quick timelapse by filmmaker and photographer Bart Oerbekke demonstrates how a series of simple edits were able to really bring one of his landscape photos to life. Want to see how a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer responds to a request for free images in exchange for "credit" from a major news corporation? Animals stealing action cameras is nothing new—monkeys, seagulls, and foxes have all gotten their 15 minutes of fame this way. News Corp photographer Brett Costello was robbed of $40,000 in camera gear at a cafe in Rio a few days ago. After showing you how to make a tripod using a piece of string, I’m going to go a little more surreal this time by explaining how an old frying pan can be used to get dramatic low angle images. I really love the combination of street photography and rain, since rain changes the mood and the city completely.
We’ll take a look at a long exposure image sample and see how can we easily reduce visible noise. Let’s admit it, it can be really frustrating to come home with dark or blurry photos. This gives the camera the processing power it needs for the PureView pixel oversampling, dual image recording, lossless (optical) zoom and helps improve image noise and dynamic range. The data wiring is at the back of the sensor, rather than the front (front-illuminated), doubling the sensor sensitivity to light. The pixel size is smaller than most of the latest Smartphone cameras, including the Lumia 920, iPhone 5 and S4 Zoom. Photographers have the option to capture a super high-res image at full 38MP resolution (effective), but here is the nifty trick. This is important to create edge-to-edge sharpness, an image that is not just sharp at the center, but also sharp at the corners.
However, given a 7.09  mm2  Aperture area, this is a very respectable size compared to other Smartphone cameras carrying a much smaller sensor (higher crop factor).
This means that you can shoot at shutter speed as low as 4 seconds (long exposure shots) and up to 16,000th of a second shutter speed to freeze the scene when shooting fast moving subjects.
You can create some very unique and compelling long exposure shots or freeze motion when shooting sporting events (e.g.
Most Smartphone cameras have an LED flash that can generate a consistent but relatively less powerful illumination. The camera can do a pretty good job in auto mode, but experienced photographers know how it limits their creativity. What I liked about it is that the image noise patterns are made of small dots and can be easily removed using noise reduction software like NeatImage. The manual exposure controls give photographers a flexible tool for experimenting with different settings to help photographers be more creative with their camera  – rather than relying on image effect apps to manipulate the image.
Contact the seller- opens in a new window or tab and request a shipping method to your location. Transit times are provided by the carrier, excluding weekends and holidays, and may vary with package origin and destination, particularly during peak periods.
Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase you maximum bid amount. Light trail photos are most commonly found with car headlights and tail lights, but you can also make light trails with stars (star trails) or any other light source in motion during low light hours of sunset or night.
There isn’t much you will need to be able to take these shots, but a proper camera, and additional equipment can help, even though some is not needed. Some cameras may allow you to slow the shutter speed down, while others (such as DSLRs) allow you to leave the shutter open for an infinite amount of time until you manually decide to close it, which allows as much light into the camera as you deem necessary. You’ll want to find somewhere where there is a lot of fast-moving traffic, and not much ambient light.
You’ll want to look through your camera and know where the photo will actually begin. They put every US Geological Survey (USGS) topographical map from across the United States on one easy-to-navigate site and made them easy to print out at home.
A 60TB drive would be massive by any standard, but the latest Seagate SAS drive is mind-blowing for one other very important reason: it's a solid state drive.

In it, you see how an $8 IKEA table turns into a full-fledged product photo booth with just a few modifications and some creative foam board placement. Both Mac and Windows computers offer simple solutions for quickly removing sensitive location info from your photo files. Louis Post-Dispatch who won the Pulitzer Prize with his paper this year for his coverage of protests in Ferguson, Missouri.
Then yesterday, while covering an event at the Olympics yesterday, Costello spotted the thief pretending to be him. Photographer Aaron Anderson has put together a lighting tutorial that will show you how he uses one light, a black flag, and a white card to capture beautiful, dramatic headshots. In the second part I will analyze high ISO sample images, compare them to other phone cameras. The thing is that the MSM8960 dual-core processor is limited for up to 20MP, but Nokia makes it possible to process a larger amount of pixel data by keeping a tight collaboration with Qualcomm to build a revised solution to overcome the limitations of the MSM8960 processor for processing over 20 megapixel data.
This has a significant implication on the camera low-light performance, and allowing the camera to shoot at high ISO speeds in relatively very low noise. The newly developed sensor, improved image processing and faster lens should compensate for the smaller pixel size, and produce sharper images with less noise. Not all lenses are the same of course, but when you have a Carl Zeiss lens, you can be certain that you have the highest quality optics with your camera. Long focus lenses with small apertures are easier to construct, but here we are dealing with a short focus lens with larger apertures, and that is why a more complex construction is necessary for optimal performance.
An optical image stabilization mechanism helps compensate for camera shake when shooting handheld — allowing photographers to shoot at slower shutter speeds up to 3-stops lower than the speed that is needed to get a sharp image. Let me give you a demonstration how effective noise reduction works for a photo like this, with those specific dotty noise patterns. Don’t forget that you are viewing the sample image above in relatively high res, a lower res would look completely clean without visible noise at all! There are so many ways to capture great shots and do things that a software just can’t do for you.
Although, I must add, having neon signs or other lighting on the side can make for cool effects. Last Friday, Carson was contacted by what appears to be a CBS account on Twitter that regularly Tweets requests for image usage. Incredibly creative, he frequently manages to surprise and delight us with his unusual portrait assignments. As an enthusiast photographer and a DSLR camera owner, I don’t rely on the built-in pop-up flash. It helps amateur photographers be more creative with their camera, especially when shooting in low light. Smart image processing algorithms can still be used, and this shouldn’t affect the IQ in any way.
The smaller sensor makes it easier to optimize the lens performance and produce sharper images, as well as helping make the camera slimmer. This allows photographers to be able to shoot in a much darker environment, boasting a 2-stop ISO advantage (4 times light sensitivity) comparing to the Lumia 920 and Lumia 928. The lens is one if not the most important camera hardware, and this is especially true when you couple such lens with a very high resolution sensor. The Lumia 1020 can shoot at 25mm or 27mm, but that’s due to the utilization of different image area on the sensor, not due to optical changes in the internal lens positioning.
A Xenon flash can’t produce a consistent illumination, but offers a much more powerful burst illumination, and therefore is the optimal solution for stills shooting. My last tip, which is good for any long exposure, is to use the noise reduction function if your camera has it. If you don’t, then you will have some light streaks start midway through the shot, coming out of nowhere.
Just something to keep in mind if you have any signs or other lighting subjects in your shot.
On the contrary, new devices usually come with updated image processing algorithms that helps improve the image quality, especially in the noise reduction processing department. Instead of a single pixel representing a single data pixel in the final image, you can for example at 5MP and each pixel will be represented by 7 adjacent pixels instead of one. ISO 3200 images are usually very noisy, but it gives photographers more freedom to get those important shots that they otherwise would have missed. The Carl Zeiss lens should provide the camera with a very high resolution and precise focusing to resolve as much detail as possible from the scene.
This is why an optical image stabilization is critical for low light shooting , especially when shooting static subjects.
Sometimes this can’t be avoided though, and also sometimes it can turn out to be cool. What I do is use bulb mode, which leaves the shutter open for as long as you want it to be open, in which you hit the shutter button for the second time to close the shutter. I usually set my ISO to 100 or 200, use a remote, hit the shutter button, and wait about ten seconds, then close the shutter.
