To photograph a Ferris wheel at night, move close and use a wide-angle lens to get as much detail as possible. A long exposure on a starry night can produce beautiful light trails created by the stars and the rotation of the earth. Traffic head light and tail light trails give a stunning effect and are a great way to get acquainted with long exposure times. To capture that dramatic look of the ocean and the sky, you should utilize the amazing light of a€?the golden houra€?, the last hour before the sun sets.
The main thing to keep in mind while deciding on the correct exposure is how to capture both the shadows as well as the highlights. In addition to your digital camera, you need a sturdy tripod to take good night photographs. Taking long exposure images at night can be perfected with practice and by learning to recognize the lighting conditions and how to adjust the camera to meet those conditions. Ita€™s hard to believe todaya€”especially since you can just look up at the sky and see our crater-covered moon with your naked eyesa€”but there was a time when people werena€™t intimately familiar with what the surface of our nearby neighbor looked like.
To shoot the moon, the technique is the same whether you have a compact digital camera or an SLR modela€”the only caveat is that no matter what kind of camera you choose, it should have a manual exposure mode, in which you dial in the aperture and shutter speed separately.
If your camera doesna€™t reach quite that far, dona€™t worry; you can still get a great photo, and you can crop it afterward to put more emphasis on the moon. If you dona€™t have a tripod, find somethinga€”a nearby tree, a window, a wall, the hood of a car, anythinga€”against which you can securely steady the camera. Finally, youa€™ll get better photos if you can trigger the exposure without touching the camera.
For the best results, switch your camera to the Manual exposure mode so that you can set the aperture and shutter speed yourself. Take the shot using the Sunny 16 settings, and review the shot in your cameraa€™s LCD screen. Suppose you see the most awesome full moon of your life, and all you have with you is an iPhone. When I change my White balance slider to Low temperatures, the image shifts blue, because it’s trying to set a white point to very warm light. The first bar represents the color of the actual light and the White balance settings you want to use in those situations, as well as what you’ve said about bluer light being a warmer temperature.
I might change it if other people are confused by it, but the information seems 100% right.

The best way to frame the image is to include an element of interest such as an old tree in the foreground. Follow the basics of night photography - place the camera on a tripod, use a wide-angle lens with the smallest aperture possible, and focus to infinity.
If you are successful in obtaining the right shadows, you will be able to produce an excellent night scene that will win you compliments. This will ensure you stabilize your camera firmly, thereby avoiding blurriness in your pictures.
Before the Renaissance-era invention of the telescope, the moon was generally thought to be a perfect, unblemished sphere. So although many compact cameras will work just fine, if your camera is a true point-and-shoot with just a bunch of scene modes to choose from, you wona€™t have much luck shooting the moon. Youa€™ll be dialing in a shutter speed thata€™s slow enough that you wona€™t be able to keep the camera steady (especially when youa€™re zoomed as far as the lens will go) without a little help.
Well, longtime photographers might recognize this setting as what used to be called the a€?Sunny 16 rule,a€? a guide to getting a good exposure in daylight back before the invention of cameras with built-in automatic exposure meters.
You might expect that one of your cameraa€™s many exposure modes will do the trick, but unfortunately none of them are up to snuff.
Whether it’s common aperture full stops, camera white balance settings, or the common exposure value table, the How-To Geek Photo Cheat Sheet is a great addition any the photographer’s wallet. Check out our previous article on the elements of exposure for clarification, or learn about how cameras work. When he’s not headbanging to heavy metal or geeking out over manga, he’s often off screen printing T-Shirts. Hence a setting on those lower temperature textures will shift your image to blue, and higher temperatures will shift your image to warmer, yellower colors.
To correct the color shift in a photo edit program you would add yellow and vice versa for yellow light. The most important tool that you will need is a sturdy tripod, and a DSLR camera that allows for long exposures. Turn the cameraa€™s mode dial to Manual or Bulb shooting mode and use a slow shutter speed (5-30 seconds) for a longer exposure. When taking long exposures, the key is to keep the shutter open only long enough for the desired effect. In order to practice night photography, your camera must have the option for manually setting the shutter speed and aperture.
What makes long exposure images special is that each image is unique, since light trails move in unusual ways, and with practice you should have a collection of photos that are one of a kind.
These days, with even a moderate telephoto lens, you can photograph the moon and see the surface details for yourself.
That might sound like a mighty big lens, but keep in mind that many common a€?megazooma€? compact cameras can reach up to 1000mma€”ita€™s almost like having a telescope nailed to the front of your camera.
That way, you can press the shutter release and the camera will take the shot several seconds later, vibration-free. Regardless of camera or mode, automatic and semiautomatic exposure settings tend to misjudge the conditions grossly when you point your camera at the night sky and shoot the moon.

Dave is the author of How to Do Everything with Your Digital Camera, and over a dozen other books. Set your camera to either Manual or TV (Shutter Priority) mode and choose a shutter speed according to the speed of the lighted Ferris wheel, and the style you are after (anywhere between 1-30 seconds).
Youa€™ll want to use a cable release to eliminate camera shake of any kind, as it will RUIN your photo. If you keep the shutter open too long, youa€™ll lose the details in whatever light source is illuminating your subject, and you might even lose the ability to identify what the subject is.
The unique images available using long exposures night is a whole realm of photography that many people do not attempt. They work in this situation because the moon is simply reflecting sunlight, and ita€™s the moon that you want to get a good exposure ofa€”not the surrounding blackness of space. To confirm, we experimented by shooting the moon with every available setting on the Nikon Coolpix L810. Not only does the lack of exposure control mean that the moon will be an overexposed blob of white, but your phonea€™s relatively wide-angle lens means that the moon will be tiny.
You should take the image using the cameraa€™s self timer or a cable release so that you avoid touching and jiggling the camera. Use your cameraa€™s self-timer or a cable release to take the photo with absolutely no blurring. The image of the Houses of Parliament required a 6 second shutter speed, which is slow enough to capture the traffic trails.
When trying to create a light trail, the shutter should be open for at least 1 second, and therefore requires a tripod.
And the relatively slow shutter speed will blur the scene unless you can stabilize the camera by holding it extremely still, or by mounting it on a small smartphone tripod or leaning it against something immobile, like a wall.
The image captured will be full of light trails against a black sky, yet the center beams that hold the wheel will be sharp. Use shutter priority mode and start with 1 second shutter speed and see what the result is; if the trail is too short, add 2 seconds, and then keep adding 2 seconds until you get the lighting effect that you want (the beauty of digital photography is that youa€™ll know immediately). Not even using the exposure compensation control to underexpose the photo by two full stops could salvage the shot. This is one of those situations where owning an advanced megazoom compact camera really comes in handy.
The more you practice the more you will become tuned to the exposure you need for the effect you want. If you have too much blurring, then your shutter was open too long, and you need to dial it back down maybe a full second. To complete the photo after your desired elapsed time, depress the remote again, and release the shutter.
If you plan to ever do creative photography, including night shots such as this, be sure that your next camera has a manual exposure mode in addition to the usual bevy of automatic and scene modes.
