A sampling of aurora borealis images from Alaska: We'll be driving wherever we need to go to seek out great foreground locations, clear skies and spectacular aurora borealis displays. All information and images on these pages are copyrighted, and remain the property of Expeditions Alaska. At a height of 2100 metres, the towering Chembra Peak is located near Meppadi in the southern part of Wayanad. Those who require camping gear may contact the District Tourism Promotion Council, located at Kalpetta in Wayanad.
Located in the southeastern part of Wayanad, and approachable from Kalpetta as well as Sulthan Bathery, Neelimala is a trekkers delight, with options for different trekking routes. Located close to Neelimala the spectacular Meenmutty falls can be reached through a 2 km trekking route from the main road connecting Ootty and Wayanad. Yet another waterfall that attracts visitors to Wayanad is the Chethalayam falls, located close to Sulthan Bathery in the northern part of Wayanad. Pakshipathalam is located deep within the forest in the Brahmagiri hills at an altitude of more than 1700 metres. While you take in the captivating sights, sounds and fragrance of Wayanad, you may also shop for some specialities of Wayanad like spices, coffee, tea, bamboo products, honey and herbal plants. Now that you are familiar with the basic structure of hydra polyps, let's take a look at how closely they actually compare to coral polyps. The calyx, theca, and coenosarc, which are not found in hydra, are responsible for connect individual polyps and creating skeletal reef-building material.
Most reef-building corals have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae, called zooxanthellaezooxanthellae: any of various yellow-green algae that live symbiotically within the cells of other organisms, such as reef-building coral polyps. One at a time, roll the cut strips back around your finger to give them a slight curl, opening the top of the cylinder.
Working with a partner or in a small group, come up with a creative way to model a full day in the life of a polyp.
Wolverines are enigmatic, wide-ranging members of the weasel family (think otters, mink, and marten) that exist in high-altitude ‘islands’ of mountain ranges in the West.  Wolverines mostly disappeared from the landscape in the 19th and 20th centuries in part due to human activities like trapping and poisoning, and they are slowly recolonizing their former territory in the northern Cascades and Rocky Mountains. Defenders and our colleagues have been fighting for nearly two decades to federally protect wolverines in the lower 48 states, where climate change threatens their future. The USFWS has one year to decide whether to follow through and publish a final listing rule. Wolverines need deep snow that lasts through spring for dens in which the females raise their young, but wolverines in the lower 48 could lose two-thirds of their snow-covered habitat by the end of this century due to climate change! Federal protection will help wolverines survive a warming world by removing threats such as trapping, giving them a better chance to expand into unoccupied habitat. Federal protection will provide the resources and attention needed for research and monitoring to better understand threats and help sustain wolverines into the future. To give the species a chance of adapting to the warming climate in the lower 48, they need a well-connected, robust population, including wolverines moving into quality former habitat that is currently vacant.  Wolverine reintroduction in high-alpine Colorado will help increase the chances of the species surviving in the lower 48 in a warming future.
Even if the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) classified Wolverine as Least Concern on its Red List, if we compared with one century ago the population of that specie has dramatically decreased like the most major part of species living on our Earth. With more than 7 Billion, maybe only Human specie sees his population growing, but here we can speak of an overpopulation. We cannot forget that every year more than 60 000 species are disappearing for ever due to human behaviors. If someone knows of a video of a wolverine running away from you, or just playing, I would like to see it.

When we recently visited the Rio Grande National Forest in southern Colorado, researchers from the U.S.
What happens when a Canadian mining company wants to dig a huge open-pit copper mine on U.S. And few, if any, natural phenomena carry quite the same magic and power over the human spirit, over seemingly the entire natural world, than the Aurora borealis. Check out this gallery of images from 2013 trip participant, David Campbell, from Australia.
While no one can ever say with certainty exactly when and where the aurora borealis display might occur, Fairbanks is certainly one of the best locations in Alaska to view the northern lights.
Firstly, it means you aren't stuck shooting the same scenes and compositions night after night. Given the aurora borealis' often fickle willingness to display, a compounding challenge is finding clear skies.
If the weather threatens to disrupt our planned itinerary, I'll jump on the phone in the afternoon, call my friends in Glennallen and see what the skies look like over there; or south toward Denali National Park. I'm a certified Wilderness First Responder, and have years of experience in the field with folks. I've spent years as a music instructor, and working as an instructor in the arts is something I enjoy immensely. Being local, it's often easy enough for me to accommodate requests for a custom trip, or substitute dates. Below I've posted a few other images from various aurora photo tour trips in February and also the fall.
Flexible, experienced and knowledgable photo tour leader, and a a perfect centralized base to work from make this one of Alaska's premiere nature photo tours. It is the tallest of peaks in the region and climbing this peak would test ones physical prowess.
At the top of Neelimala, the sight is a breathtaking one with a view to the Meenmutty falls located near by and the valley in the foreground. It is the largest of waterfalls in the district of Wayanad, and adds to ones curiosity with its three stage falls dropping from about 300 metres. The dam is located in the southwestern part of Wayanad district and is close to the Karalad Lake.
Hard corals have an outer skeleton made of limestone, also known as calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and soft corals have bits of calcium carbonate embedded inside their bodies.
Place a pencil on the edge of the note nearest you and roll the paper loosely around the pencil.
Biologists estimate there are fewer than 300 wolverines in the contiguous United States, and wolverines have one of the lowest successful reproduction rates known for mammals. Female wolverines need deep snow that lasts through spring for dens in which they raise their young, but researchers predict wolverines in the lower 48 could lose two-thirds of their snow-covered habitat by the end of this century due to climate change. Trapping of wolverines has been allowed in Montana, where up to five wolverines statewide could be trapped legally each year. A ‘threatened’ status prohibits killing or harming wolverines, so it will stop trapping of wolverines in Montana, giving them a better chance to expand into unoccupied habitat.
They are holding a public comment period from February 4 to May 5, 2013, to give folks the opportunity to provide additional information on the proposal. This involves incorporating ecology, public lands and wildlife management policy, field research, outreach and education, and law into Defenders’ mesocarnivore programs, and working within partnerships to help protect these species and their habitats in the Rockies.
Government legislation can not provide undisturbed land if humans keep over populating the earth.
So far, this fall has already provided photographers with some spectacular opportunities, and the coming spring promises to be just as grand.
Just as critically, it's a great central location within Alaska to get around the state to other potential shooting locations. Clouds can roll in and cover the most wondrous spectacle you ever saw, and it's awfully frustrating to not have the option available to jump in your car and drive a hundred miles off to clearer skies. Secondary options will be the endless array of Alaska winter scenics and landscape photography opportunities in interior Alaska.
You'll be heading out to shoot in the dusky afternoon for sunset options, and then waiting to see what happens with the aurora. This is not really a photo workshop, as the purpose here is not instruction, but rather shooting. Weather delays are not unusual with Alaska air travel at any time of year, so you should aim to get to Fairbanks the day before the trip begins, spend the night, and we'll meet up on Day 1 of the trip in Fairbanks. Deposits are generally non-refundable, unless there are some truly extenuating circumstances. The climb up the Chembra Peak is an exhilarating experience, as each stage in the climb unfolds great expanses of Wayanad and the view gets wider as one goes up to its summit. The falls and the adjoining areas are ideal locales for trekking and a haunt for bird watchers.

The deep caves found here are home to a wide variety of birds, animals and distinctive species of plants. The project area of the Banasura Sagar Dam also has the start point for treks to the Banasura Peak. The CaCO3 in soft corals is in the form of little spikes that help bind many individual polyps together in fan- or whip-like structures. The zooxanthellae, like all plants, convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into oxygen and carbohydrates that feed the coral polyps and help them produce reef-building calcium carbonate. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in 2000 requesting protection for the species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and took legal action in 2005 and 2008 when the agency did not move forward to protect the species. This doesn’t sound like a lot, but trapping one reproducing female from a small mountain range could reduce the reproductive potential of that local population.
Climate change is another factor; the mothers need snow to raise their young and this human made tragedy is giving them less time ! This excellent news is evidence that the secretive forest cats are continuing to make a living on this national forest, even though their habitat is radically changing in the Southern Rockies.
The cycle will likely begin to decline sometime in the next few years, so for this trip, sooner is better than later.
McKinley, and the next evening you could be standing on the high open subarctic tundra, composing the snow-laden spruce trees of the boreal forest against a swirling, Rising Vapor column.
You simply can't beat the benefit of local knowledge when it comes to finding locations to shoot the aurora borealis. See this comprehensive guide to shooting aurora borealis photography for an in-depth look at what works and what doesn't work (better yet, download the eBook version of that entire series of articles via this link). I'm always more than willing to offer any assistance of course, and share what experience I have that may be of benefit to you. The photo tour will base out of Fairbanks, so when we finish up, you can fly back home right from Fairbanks as well. Pakshipathalam is located near Mananthavady and a visit to the region would require a 7 km trek through the forest, starting from Thirunelli. An interesting feature is a set of islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas. Vertical partitions called septa (plural form of septum) extend part-way into the cup from the inner surface of the theca. In return, the corals provide the zooxanthellae with protection and the compounds they need for photosynthesis. Then in 2010, FWS determined that wolverines did in fact warrant ESA protections, but the agency was precluded from taking further action due to higher priorities. To give the species a chance of adapting to the warming climate in the lower 48, they need a well-connected, robust population, including wolverines reclaiming currently unoccupied habitat. A diversity of photos is available that simply is not possible when locked in a remote cabin in some inaccessible backcountry wilderness. We'll use every option available to best predict when the displays might occur, but for the most part, it's a waiting game of cat and mouse. Many cups connected together make up a coral colony, and when hundreds of hard coral colonies grow next to and on top of one another, coral reefscoral reef: aragonite (calcium carbonate) structure produced by corals and found in shallow, tropical marine waters. Pigments in zooxanthellae also give corals their beautiful orange, red, purple, and yellow colors.
Thankfully, on February 1, 2013, FWS finally proposed to protect wolverines in the contiguous U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service to create a comprehensive recovery plan that discusses what specific actions need to be taken in order to restore the species. It brings public attention and hopefully public resources to wolverines – once folks get to know how impressive wolverines are, they’re that much more likely to help protect them!  It also brings to light the complex challenges of climate change that wolverines and other species face.
No filters for aurora borealis photography, but your standard polarizer and GND filters are helpful for any landscape photography we may do. Listing the wolverine should provide additional resources necessary for research and monitoring. If you have any questions about camera gear or clothing options, just send me a note before the tour; but it's mostly covered in the link above.
Many corals also feed by collecting very small bits of floating material on strings of mucous, which they pull into their mouths. Most reef-building corals have very small polyps, about one to three millimeters in diameter.
