Lately, I’ve been realizing that sometimes self-care doesn’t look very much like self-care. Sometimes, self-care is doing the laundry and writing your to-do list for the week so you aren’t scrambling to get ready for work.
Sometimes, it’s passing on dinner with friends so you can finish a project today instead of frantically trying to finish it tomorrow. Sometimes, it’s skipping your favorite TV show to wash the dishes so you wake up to a clean home. Maybe when we consider how we want to take care of ourselves, we consider the short-term activities that feel blissful in the moment — naps, massages, watching a sitcom, lunch with a friend — and we consider the longer term.

We consider what will nourish us for the week ahead, what contributes to our overall well-being. Because sometimes the kindest thing we can do for ourselves might not feel fun or like we’re floating on a cloud. The funny thing about self-care is that sometimes it doesn’t look or feel very much like self-care.
If you love someone with depression, sometimes it can be painfully difficult to know how to show them love and help them through difficult times. So you deliberately create your days, instead of feeling like you’re being pulled by the clock.

And yet when we’ve finished the task or activity, we find that we’ve been and are well taken care of.
It might be making a home-cooked meal when we least want to cook, writing in a planner, running an extra errand, saying no to a lunch date.
Kelly from The Darling Bakers shares some incredibly simple but powerful ways to show love to someone with depression–these tips may just change your life.
