Have you ever taken a photo of a magnificent vista, only to find out that the image doesn’t look nearly as good as in real life? The iPhone (or any other smartphone) has a small digital sensor which inevitably leads to poor image quality in low-light conditions. The number one mistake people make in landscape photography is focusing exclusively on the background, which is understandable because the background is usually the most significant part of the scene in real life. When I wanted to get the best view of the valley, I naturally sought out places where nothing obscures the view.
You should always add context and perspective to the photo by including relevant details in the foreground, because only in context of these details you can accurately convey the experience of the scene.
While most people try to get a clear scene for their landscape photos, I often like to include human subjects that add another dimension to the photo. While the foreground of landscape photos is extremely important, you should also pay attention to the sky if it’s going to be inside your composition.
Ideally, you should look for partially cloudy sky as cloud patterns can often make the photo more interesting.
The easiest way to improve your photos is to improve composition, and landscape photos are of course no exception. More than any other composition guideline, in landscape photography you should pay attention to the diagonal principle.
Roads like this can literally draw the viewer deeper into the photo, making an otherwise flat photo a lot more immersive.
HDR, which stands for high dynamic range, is a photo capture mode that automatically combines two or more exposures of the same scene to correctly expose both highlights and shadows, and landscape photography is when it can help you the most. The above photo (did you notice the road?) was shot in Pro HDR, which is a very powerful app that creates a strong HDR effect. While Pro HDR is a great app, it can be a bit clumsy at times since it takes several seconds just to take one photo.
Fortunately it’s very easy to correct issues like that using one of the many great photo apps on the App Store. Simple photo adjustments like this can make a huge difference, but no editing can turn a bad photo into a good one.

One feature the iPhone Camera app badly needs natively is a self-timer, which allows you to set a time delay, say 10 seconds, before the camera shoots a picture. The good news is that many third party developers have stepped in to fill the void, so while we wait for the inevitable addition to the iPhone default Camera app (we hope, at least), there are a variety of options to choose from if you want the ability to set a timer to take a photo. TimerCam is probably the best free option for a simple self-timer app, if for no reason other than being free and remarkably basic. PhotoTimer has the same general self-timer features as TimerCam, but includes timing options of up to a minute before triggering, offers a grid guide like the default camera app for rule of thirds shooting, zoom settings, and then branches into more artsy options with optional collages, color adjustment, frames, photo effects, and better sharing features.
For setting timer countdowns, PhotoTimer is probably the best, but it’s not as good as editing photos or fine controls as Camera+. It does seem a bit strange for one of the most basic point-and-shoot features of a camera to not be bundled onto the iPhone alongside the options for, cropping, HDR, and Panorama, but here’s to hoping that iOS 7 or later will add the feature… sooner than later!
Anyway, I’m a cheap skate so I like free apps when something is bound to be included by the manufacturer, and likely implemented better too. Camera+ is a great app but it’s overkill for just these features alone, in my opinion. Yes This Happened: A woman getting launched into orbit after her bicycle wheels became stuck in a drainage pipe.
Instagram, the popular photo sharing network known for its huge user base and getting acquired by Facebook, today released a new feature called Instagram Direct.
There are, however, moments in our lives that we want to share, but that will be the most relevant only to a smaller group of people—an inside joke between friends captured on the go, a special family moment or even just one more photo of your new puppy.
This kind of feature for an open social network like Instagram was not seen as missing, but was used in other services which offered better privacy and group options, and it now seems clear that Instagram is looking at a lock-in for its strong user base, which is alright we guess.
When you open Instagram, you’ll now see a new icon in the top right corner of your home feed. After sending, you’ll be able to find out who’s seen your photo or video, see who’s liked it and watch your recipients commenting in real time as the conversation unfolds. As you can see from the image above, this pretty much works like Twitter’s own DM service, which recently enabled sending of photos. A new store has just opened and I cannot contain my excitement! No, it’s not COS or Sephora or another H&M. I’m writing this post on the road driving from Melbourne to Adelaide for what feels like the 977th time. Statistically the Melbourne to Adelaide journey is only an eight-hour drive, making it the shortest distance between any of Australia’s capital cities, and the equivalent time of travelling from Prahran to Preston via Punt Road.
Short of a personal jet, driving from Melbourne to Adelaide can be the fastest way to get between the two cities, especially now that the majority of the decade-running roadworks are finished. There are three ways to do the Melbourne to Adelaide drive: the short way, the long way or the scenic way, via the Great Ocean Road.
Yes, the Great Ocean Road is beautiful and a worthy detour, but taking 12 hours (if you don’t stop, which of course you will, otherwise what’s the point), it’s the longest possible way to get from Melbourne to Adelaide. Those on a timeline should head through the guts of the country, via Ballarat, Horsham and Bordertown. If it’s after dark, do not even slow down – there’s something not quite right about the Giant Koala’s piecing red zombie eyes.
Unless you like your meals of the fat-laden and deep-fried variety, the food choices between Adelaide and Melbourne largely range from bad to worse. Ballarat – the largest town on the eight-hour route, you’ll find your best food options here. Beaufort – every time I drive through Beaufort I see the same rose-amongst-the-thorns cafe, Magnolia’s Bakery & Cafe.
Ararat – there’s a nice dine-in cafe on the main street of Ararat, called the Vines Cafe & Bar, serving up delicious quiches and eggs benedict. Horsham – during daylight hours there’s a decent cafe option in Cafe Jas Licensed Bar and Restaurant. Kavina – the Windmill Cafe and Visitor Centre do an ok take-away egg and bacon roll, with a side of visitor information (if you need it).
Tailem Bend – surprisingly, one of my preferred stops on the journey is the Tailem Bend BP. Murray Bridge – a bustling regional centre, you’re back to your pub, cafe and take-away smorgasbord but it’s only an hour out of Adelaide, making a stop pretty much pointless.
A pillow – falling asleep in one state and waking up in another is the best way to make the drive go fast. Headphones – so I can listen to my ’90s dance music without complaint from the AM-listening old man sitting next to me. Doing the drive with minimum one person will make it go so much faster; someone to talk to, someone to share the drive with, someone to pass you the snacks. Plus, if you’re travelling with a spouse, it’s a great time to bring up difficult conversations knowing they can’t escape. This made me giggle – a lot – and will probably prove very useful on our return trip from (R)Adelaide ?? Thanks, funny girl!
Excellent article – exactly the info I was looking for and an entertaining read as well! I too have done the Melbourne to Adelaide drive too many times to remember and have almost given up on finding any decent food along the way, so thanks for the tips. Another one that I have had recommended is Mason Clarke Preserving Co in Dimboola, which sounds promising and is around the half way mark.

Gday I own the cafe at the giant koala and since your comments I have noticed a huge decline in customers.
This is May from original Myanmar, and I am planning to come to Adelaide by driving from Melbourne. But I’m afraid of missing road trip plan too, so I am not going to take long minutes, perhaps 20 minutes is fine.
Hi Bill, we are travelling with a lot of kids so we will definitely stop for photos and coffee.
We will with rent a car for the entire trip or maybe sign up with a tour if we just do part of it. Thanks Olivia ?? It sounds like you will need patience by the bucketload, or some how get them all to have a group (eight-hour) nap.
There’s a great new little cafe in Kaniva salled Heart Felt there is a different menu evertday ( not all deep fried stuff) that is all home cooked, but they always have homemade sausage rolls with flakey pastry and ask for their homemade tomato relish yum. We do the drive the other way, but lolz at Dadswell bridge’s Koala (and Preston to Prahan being an equivalent journey). While all of us have experienced that at some point, there are some tips that can dramatically improve the quality of the landscape photos you take with the iPhone.
However, landscape photos are almost always taken in abundant light, making them practically indistinguishable from photos taken with an expensive DSLR.
When I was hiking in Yosemite, I kept admiring the mountains in the distance while hardly paying attention to my immediate surroundings. But when I wanted to take a good landscape photo I always did the opposite, because a photo with no perspective and nothing but mountains in the distance will almost never look good.
Of course, you don’t want to have the frame full of tourists you don’t know, but having a solitary skier admire the beauty of the mountain sunset certainly adds a more emotional dimension to the photo. Since that was one of the first warm days that year, many people were enjoying the weather and spending time outside. When that is the case, feel free to let the sky take up two thirds of the photo or more as the primary elements in the image shift towards the sky. In a nutshell, the diagonal principle states that the most important elements of your composition should be placed diagonally so that the image is balanced both horizontally and vertically.
The two most essential elements of the scene – the orange rock at top right and the regular rock at bottom left – are placed diagonally from each other, with the river also cutting through the scene diagonally. Such roads, which are examples of leading lines, add perspective to the photo and invite the viewers to subconsciously follow their path.
Notice how both the highlights of the scene (the sky) and the shadows (the windmill) are properly exposed. The iOS Camera app has a built-in HDR mode as well, and while it’s not nearly as strong as Pro HDR, it can capture photos much faster. While I like the calm river scenery, this photo could do a much better job at showcasing the beautiful fall colors. For landscape photos I recommend avoiding filter apps and doing more controlled adjustments using an app like Snapseed. You should focus on taking great landscape photos following all the other tips, and only afterwards you can think about improving them if needed.
The reason I mentioned 4S was to show people that they don’t need a 5S to take good photos. This lets you as the photographer be able to set the camera up somewhere, set the timer, then walk on over to be in the frame of their own shot. Using TimerCam is as simple as it gets, tap the number on the screen to set the timer in seconds, the free version has options for 5, 10, 15, and 30 seconds. If you want more options in general or a nicer UI experience, the next two app options are significantly better apps, but they’ll cost you a cup of coffee.
It has the self-timer option we’re all looking for, but Camera+ is really much more than that, and with minimal effort you can utilize advanced camera features like controlling focus and exposure separately, rather than locking them together like in the default iPhone Camera app. Subscribe to the OSXDaily newsletter to get more of our great Apple tips, tricks, and important news delivered to your inbox!
I went with Camera Timer, it’s free and also looks like a pig, but it works and includes a burst mode. The uber popular app has finally received private messaging with the ability to send photos, videos and even text to an instagram user or just your own list of people.
If someone you’re not following sends you a photo or video on Instagram, it will go to your requests so you can decide if you want to view it. You can immediately send Instagram Directs to all the people that follow you, but if people you don’t follow want to send you directs, you can let them only after accepting their request. It’s a 24-hour Wendys in Bordertown (the-aptly named town that sits on the border of South Australia and Victoria).
And be warned, the scenery is as bland as a banana milkshake (not chocolate), all dry grass and gum trees. However, it’s not a quick option and also shuts mid-afternoon leaving you with standard Subway, KFC and McDonalds fare. Alternatively, if you’re happy to lose an hour in exchange for a parma, there are several good pubs.
And, given the line up of locals at 12pm, I’m clearly not the only one who’s excited about the prospect of a midnight shake n dog. I also have an eye mask and a pair of socks stashed in the glove box to facilitate this shut eye. Fortunately, I’m forever grateful to the police officer for letting us go and giving me proof from now until eternity to criticise my husband’s driving. Two hours on, two hours off, two hours on, two hours off, and then ta-da, you’re soon approaching Adelaide, or as I call it an outer suburb of Melbourne. The idea behind this post is how to do the Melbourne to Adelaide drive as efficiently as possible. Planning a trip to Adelaide from melbs on new years day, and you just answered all the questions i had on the drive in one post!
It’s nearly double the time than driving direct between Adelaide and Melbourne, but definitely much prettier. It’s a beast but certainly more fun than flying and there are some great places to stop off on the way. It’s the first mobile basketball game that can even be considered playable as a basketball simulation on the go. NBA 2K15 has joined FIFA, and the result is an enjoyable game of basketball from start to finish.
In addition to the improved graphics engine, the touch controls, while not perfect, let you fully be in control of all the action on screen. The result is equal parts authentic, and fun to play making it a great pick up as basketball has finally arrived in the App Store. Our site's coverage extends to everything Apple 'n' app related, but our primary focus is on the cross section of the two.
I lost my friends, my education, my health and almost my life.” But Danny is not some bizarre one-off case in a world where smartphone and social media obsession is spiralling upwards.

And while the park on its own was very beautiful, this photo wouldn’t tell the full story without the the people passing through the scene. While the rock at the bottom left may seem insignificant, it plays an important role in keeping the image balanced against the much larger orange rock. In a non-HDR image, either the sky would be white or the windmill would be black due to the dynamic range of the scene. There’s a toggle to switch from the front to back camera, and to use the flash or not. There are also simple options to adjust lighting and exposure for different scene types, the ability to adjust colors, temperatures, white balance, and tones right in the app, and a handful of filters that don’t look tacky (unlike some of the others out there). On the other hand if the advanced options are necessities or sound good, $2 is pretty cheap to add a sorely needed feature to the iPhone’s camera.
Why Apple ignored these fundamental photography basics while implementing advanced features like HDR is a little strange, but I do think they must be coming in the future.
It has a self timer, is free and has quite a few other nice touches like spirit level, grid, burst mode, time lapse etc. This is a bid to take on popular messaging apps like Whatsapp and Snapchat which have offered users with sharing personal pictures, with the latter even offering timed photos.
To send a photo or video to specific people, tap the camera button to enter the same simple photo or video capture and editing screens. With this feature, Instagram strives to keep the 150 million user base strong and increase engagement. I’m like a pig in a chocolate milkshake, because it’s one more food option on a 736-kilometre stretch of road that I know intimately well (and a 736-kilometre stretch of road that has some very poor food choices).
Then you also have a mode of transport once you arrive in Adelaide and don’t need to hire or steal a car off another amenable parent.
However, it’s 10 minutes off and back on the highway and it’s also only an hour into the eight-hour trip. The Morning Loaf Bakery is another good spot in Bordertown, and your first (or last) chance to inhale some South Aussie pastry goodness.
Although I have say I have given up on the Morning Loaf Bakery in Bordertown; good location but average food.
If travellers aren’t on a time schedule, then the Giant Koala is a perfectly worthy food and photo stop (I just prefer to stop where there is fuel as well). My 15 year old is obsessed with doof doof music and has already compiled a 9 hour playlist of tunes that will make me want to literally throw him out of the car! From experiencing the previous efforts, as well as the console editions, we have a unique perspective for NBA 2K15.
Previous efforts have been embarrassing, and it makes NBA 2K15 look that much better in comparison.
Basketball is a relatively frenetic game that has a lot of moving parts, and 2K seems to have finally ported the engine from consoles to iOS, rather than trying to make a mobile version. It seems 2K put most of their effort into the graphics department, leaving the feature set on the simple side. The top psychiatrist at the clinic where Danny was treated revealed addiction to taking selfies is becoming so widespread it is now is a recognised mental illness. “Danny’s case is particularly extreme,” said Dr David Veal who’s clinic has weaned the teen off his iPhone. Take a second to frame the shot right, find the best angle, and try to follow these iPhone composition tips.
You also get the grid, digital zoom, an flashlight toggle to light up subjects for portraits, a digital stabilizer, cloud syncing between your other iOS devices, and a pretty good photo manager. With reports of failed acquisition attempts of Snapchat by Facebook, we had initially thought if this involved the parent company, but doesn’t look like it.
At the top of the share screen, you’ll see the option to share with your followers (“Followers”) or to send to specific people (“Direct”). Naturally, the number of times a user opens instagram will be lot more after using the Direct feature, we guess that’s what Instagram is going for. Please also remember that this is a personal blog and the personal opinion of only one person, and a tongue in cheek one at that; people will inevitably make up their own minds if they want to take the time to stop, or not. The best places to stay overnight would be Apollo Bay, Port Fairy or Portland (in Victoria); or Mount Gambier (in South Australia). For the first time on iOS, you can actually dribble the ball where you want, pass to specific points, take properly timed shots, guard opponents, generate steals, and simply feel in control of both sides of the court. It’s close enough to the console version to fully enjoy, and forget about the previous hampering of the earlier mobile editions. The game only includes quick play single game mode, or mycareer mode with no season, or franchise mode to choose from. We try to bring you the highest quality articles on everything Apple 'N' Apps, as well as recommendations of other items in the Apple universe. All that fun shit you can get hooked on, and this bro decides taking pretty pictures of himself is gonna be his addiction. True to their initial promise, Instagram is still independent, but has only gained a business model in ads. To send using Direct, tap the names of the people you want to send your photo or video to, write your caption, tap “send” and you’re done. Always looks a bit mangey – bit like the ones down the Otways in need of a good feed.
2K claims vastly improved graphics, all new player animations, and realistic gameplay, and they’re not lying. There’s an actual flow to the game like a real basketball game with the way the players move around the court. Once you’re able to perform a couple of passes on a fast break, or dribble into the lane, and kick out for a three, you know you have an actual basketball game. The mycareer mode feels identical to the last generation console version, minus the audio, which again is quite an achievement.
The update enabling Instagram Direct is immediately available for Android and iOS while the official blog reminds us that the Windows Phone client is still a beta. There could be tours leaving from Mount Gambier too, it’s quite a large regional centre.
The setting is reminiscent of the quality on PS3, though some modeling still is at PS2 era, but either way it’s quite a jump for iOS.
There’s the third person behind the basket camera angle to see the flow of the action, and play as just one player from draft pick all the way up the depth chart.
The quick game mode doesn’t offer the most depth, but it does let you play with any two teams in a full five on five game to switch between players, and control all of the action.
First angle you have a double chin, so you tilt your head up and then the second angle you see right up your fucking nostrils. The next 2 just come out flat out ugly because you’re not that good looking of a person. Will definetely be taking the short route as we have further to travel (from far east Melbourne). Finally on your 5th try you get something that looks slightly mediocre and you just go with it because you’re sick of being a vain idiot and you give up. You post it to one of your various social media platforms and you don’t even get any action. You realize just how much of an asshole you were the past few minutes taking pictures of yourself because you’re all by yourself with no friends, no family around. I’d probably kill myself too if I did that every day snapping hundreds and hundreds of selfies.
