Due to the geographical conditions, it is the US Navy which plays the most important role in shaping US military presence in the Arctic. In order to fulfill those tasks, USN will have to use an extensive set of tools, among which the most important will be: increasing its military presence in the region, by sending more ships on Arctic patrols (both surface and subsurface), provide them with adequate means of preserving US interests in the region, especially in terms of maritime awareness.
This global nature of USN’s operational involvement has been threatened in the recent years due to budgetary constraints, forcing US to reduce DoD’s budget. It will impact on Navy’s ability to preserve its superiority (or operational readiness at least) in every corner of the World.
The key objective of Navy’s Arctic involvement is to preserve US sovereignty over particular parts of the region, as well as to protect country’s strategic interests there.
The second objective is to accumulate enough resources to increase US military projection in the region. The fourth objective will be to establish operational cooperation with other regional players, both the NATO members and Russia. A popular, if somewhat controversial, way of seeing the sights in charming Mijas Pueblo is the well-known burro-taxis or donkey-drawn carts and donkey-back rides. When visiting the area and staying close by in a holiday villa, these colourful and quaint creatures make for many a photographic moment. The donkeys themselves are the Asno Andaluz or Andalusian donkey, a domestic breed of donkey native to the province of Cordoba in Andalusia, Spain.
However, it was back in the 1960s that holidaymakers in the area saw workers returning home with their donkeys and mules, and persuaded them to let the tourists pose with (or on) the animals as an original snapshot of their Spanish holiday. Since then the burro-taxis have become an icon of Mijas Pueblo and no visit is complete without a ride. Some of the more high tech donkeys even have their own website (in Spanish) these days, where bookings can be made online.
The starting point of all rides is the Plaza de la Virgen de la Pena and from there the burro-taxis run through the historic centre of town.
There has been some controversy over the donkey taxis over the years, with many people saying the practice is cruel, but each animal is registered with the local municipality and they even have an official number plate. Along with some elegant horse-drawn carriages, the donkey taxis of Mijas are a charming and colourful way to see the town in leisurely style. Predicted changes in the environmental conditions, especially the depletion of the ice sheet, will allow USN to extend its naval presence in the region. It will require to relocate surface ships and submarines as well as surveillance aircraft to the Arctic .
