One of the first things you need to decide when using a digital camera is whether to shoot in RAW or JPEG file format. Some photographers prefer to shoot RAW because of the extra flexibility this file format offers; others prefer to shoot JPEG because it means they dona€™t have to spend so much time on their computers afterwards. The downside a€“ and there is always a downside a€“ is that saving both takes up valuable memory card space. There might be times when you want to take photographs to e-mail, or for a website, but also need prints at a later date. Even if you generally shoot only JPEGs, there are occasions when you might want to shoot RAW and JPEG simultaneously simply because you want back-up and peace of mind. Capturing RAW and JPEG images together can be a real advantage if you are shooting tethered to a computer.
This is especially important if you are using one of the Canon WiFi units to transmit images wirelessly back to your computer.
The details you provide on this page will not be used to send unsolicited e-mail, and will not be sold to a 3rd party. The next series of videos, "How to Shoot RAW - without Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt," answer one question: why shoot RAW? The main criticism I have is that some of the analogies and explanations are a bit belabored, and Tapes never mentions the advantages of shooting JPEG, at least for casual photographers. As a side note, the subtitle refers to using these tutorials for digital SLRs, but the videos and the RAW principal applies to any digital camera that can shoot a RAW format, such as many advanced point-and-shoot cameras.

The second chapter includes very long segments, starting with a quite technical explanation about how CCD or CMOS sensors record light, and the Bayer-DeBayer process using a ray-traced rendering. The fourth and last chapter has sections on choosing a camera, color theory, and Tapes’ philosophical musings on art and photography, as well as other odds and ends: ProPhoto, metadata, DNG (digital negative) and JPEG uses.
The extra DVD, available only as a physical disk, is interesting, but serves more as an appendix. One of the dangers of only including links, of course, is that links tend to change, and under Color Management Theory, the Chromix link is invalid. I shoot a D70 in RAW mode all the time without the problems you're experiencing and what you are doing seems right.


I'll still use higher ISO when I need it to get the shot because I'd rather have the shot than miss it all together but I'll always use the lowest setting I can.

By shooting both RAW and JPEG together, you can get the best of both worlds a€“ an image that you can tweak endlessly in RAW software, and one that you can print out straight away without the need for conversion on your computer.
Inside the church you set the camera white balance to a€?Tungstena€™ for available light shots of the service. If all the images were shot as JPEG files, you might be able to make some corrections to the files in Photoshop, but the colours will not be perfect. The set-up allows you (and anybody else involved in the shoot) to check the images immediately on your computera€™s much larger screen.
You can download the JPEG files to your computer, while the RAW files stay on the CompactFlash card.
Although these wireless transmitters are able to transmit at up to 54mbps, in practice they can only transmit at the maximum speed of your network, which may be much slower if conditions are less than ideal. The corollary is: "What are the disadvantages of shooting JPEG?" For a self-produced DVD, the quality is superb. These include much faster writes to storage media and less or even no post processing to achieve a usable image. The music and flipping background for every section introduction within each chapter is grating - even annoying - but otherwise these video segments are well done. The main reason is that with RAW, all the original information is recorded, so we can subsequently reprocess image information without any loss, as the mood suits us. In the camera section, Tapes recommends the D-40 over the D-40x, because not all the megapixels translate to a better picture, unless you are shooting pictures to be enlarged significantly. In a neatly laid out Webpage, Tapes provides glossary-item topics from the tutorials as hyperlinks. Links to WhiBal tutorials and Wikipedia definitions are included, though surprisingly, the tutorials are not on the disc. Because there is no explanation about whether or not each of the many links is to software on the DVD, a Website or trial or free software, you quickly lose interest in navigating through all the choices. There are some links to whitepapers on Adobe Camera Raw, or Adobe DNG (digital negative), for example, and on sample RAW and JPEG images to show how exposure or color correction may be better served by RAW. In fact, here are 10 reasons why you should be shooting in RAW! I’ve actually petitioned the High Council of Photographers to change the name to Awesome mode. So to open up a file in Photoshop, you first need to use Adobe Camera RAW, which is a program that is included with Photoshop. Not sure though because I ditched that and downloaded the free Nikon View from the Nikon website which is a much better piece of software IMHO. However, downloading RAW files to your computer can be quite slow, especially if you are shooting in bursts. Downloading JPEGs to your computer is much quicker than downloading RAW files, which means you dona€™t have to wait as long for the images to appear on the screen. Sending large files across a wireless network is never lightning fast, so minimizing the size of the file you need to send will ensure the best network performance, while leaving the high-quality image files on your camera for working on later. In a later segment, Tapes points out that the RAW format is equivalent to a permanent latent image that can be repeatedly processed non-destructively. The Nyquist limit, as it relates to digital photography, is the highest frequency that can be coded at a given sampling frequency in order to fully reconstruct the signal. Finally, as a purchaser, you have exclusive access to a private forum that Tapes maintains.
The bigger novelty for enthusiast camera photographers, however, is the option to save a lossless raw file (in DNG format) for post-processing rather than a compressed JPEG. When I’m not shooting, or writing, you can find me cooking (and eating!), traveling, and hanging out with wonderful people. Worth a shot though, especially if you can borrow a faster card from a friend to test it out! The RAW page in CS is the first that opens up were I can white balance and all that stuff I adjust to my liking then click OK. The one thought that does come to mind is are you using a high ISO setting as that will generate more noise than shooting at 200 ISO. All EOS digital cameras (except the EOS D30 and D60) can save both RAW and JPEG files to the CompactFlash card at the same time. Before each RAW file was converted, you would have been able to change the white balance from a€?Tungstena€™ to a€?Daylighta€™ and the final prints would have shown correct colours (above right).

One of those photographers is Michael Tapes, and his selected photographs are much better than the examples he picked as illustrative points in his WhiBal tutorials. The sections are organized by subject, chapter and ancillary information relating to the first DVD. In the section "Instant JPEGS from RAW," an installer is included on the DVD, but for two out of three products, the software is a time-out or locked version. Most photographers would benefit from listening to whole segments of tutorials, and most advanced amateurs I know should probably watch the whole thing.
That said I wouldn't expect a JPG shot at high ISO to be better than a RAW file shot at high ISO. However, compared to the examples from the pros, most of Tapes’ work exhibited in this chapter lacks the pros’ superb sense of composition.
The color theory and management sections probably should have been placed earlier, but they were among some of my favorite sections. As an example of the links, Tapes’ references for the section on choosing a camera to shoot RAW include links to manufacturer information, independent professional photographers and the site Digital Photography Review for the selected cameras.
In fact, these tutorials are more about image processing of files that happen to be RAW and can sometimes be applied to JPG images. Included are recent previews of the Nikon D-300, which is not scheduled for release until November of this year.
