Hello Ian, some days ago my father gave me his old D3100, I was always interested in night views, I was practising it with my phone (Xiaomi Mi4, same sensor as 1+1, you made a wonderful review!). Will soon be purchasing the Nikon D750 and am looking for a lens for Astro stuff for a visit we have planned to Europes largest designated dark sky site so want to make sure I choose the best for the job. Hi Ian, great site, really enjoyed looking through your articles and bringing new life to some of my older night sky photographs and getting new ideas.
Unfortunately I’m now in the most cloudy place on the planet, no stars in months, Bird Island, South Georgia, fortunately Albatrosses and Penguins make up for that. I actually have a D5000 with few lens and one RONIKON 14mm, ( Which is not a DX Lens) SO far I was able to get some cool shot, but I start to realize that I’m limitied in the photo quality. I am considering an upgrade to a better “walk around” lens with the hope that I could use this for the occasional bit of milky way photography too? If you have any suggestions that you think may be of use closer to my ?200 ($300) budget it would be much appreciated! Which lensures would you suggest for milky way and astro photography when using a nikon d5000.

Suddenly there was a massive crack of lightning a few miles out, so bright that it lit up the canyon light it was daylight.
This photograph would later on win second place in the 2013 National Geographic Traveler photo contest, which received over 15,000 entries this year.
AN HOUR AFTER SUNSET, most photographers are packing up their gear and heading to a nice hot meal and a warm bed, but not me. Typically, I will scout a location during the day, looking for unique angles, perspectives, and subjects to shoot, with a vision in mind of how it will look at night.
There are so many factors, so many challenges that come into play with night photography, that when you finally do capture the perfect night shot, it’s that much more rewarding. As I was shivering for hours in the cold dark night, I had to do jumping jacks between shots to keep warm. I spent several days hiking around Fitz Roy in Chile in search of great night photography locations. At midnight, I started hiking and quickly realized it was a terrifying experience to try to keep track of the tiny footpath that wandered through the woods for miles, alone in the dark. There are several techniques for night photography — some more pure and natural than others.
Sometimes everything comes together and no amount of planning could have created a more perfect photograph. I had no idea how it would turn out, but when I returned home and downloaded the image to my computer, I saw that everything had come together by chance to create this compelling night shot. Most of these images were made with the D600, a camera who's low light capabilities really surprised me. As much as I love (and appreciate) National Geographic I’m still not hearing why this work is so unique. Just curious, can you provide an example of a photograph or a photographer that you think has the qualities that you feel are lacking in these. Yes, it would be nice to be able to visit places we can only dream about but not being able to is no excuse for not being able to produce great art.

What makes it special is that while you and the rest of the world were drunk watching the teevee in your ratty underwear and your wife sat in the kitchen wondering how the options in her life had dwindled down to this, he was out alone in the dark hundreds of miles from civilization making art. I took some pictures of the Milky Way with my Sony Nex 6 and the kit lenss 16-55mm and i have noticed that it captured only a small part of the arch. But now I would like to improve my shots a lot using this old and cheap DSLR (still better than my phone for night captures, at the same level for full daylight).
The extra stop on the 16mm help take in more light, but the 10mm’s wider field of view also allows you to make slightly long exposures without seeing star trails so they sort of even out. I’m a complete novice to astrophotography (and only a relative amateur to DSLR photography in general) but these articles have made me desperate to give it a go despite living in the UK and having very few clear nights in which to see the stars! I am looking into buying a new lens (I just purchased a D3300) for photographing the northern lights.
50mm on a d7100 is quite zoomed in, so you will have to do very short exposures unless you want star trails (Google focal length and star trails to learn about the relationship). Personally with a camera similar to the d7100 I use a 12mm and a 16mm for this sort of night shooting.
That said, I will say that the 50mm could be used in a pinch but you’ll be limited to panorama stitching due to its narrow field of view. I have a Nikkor 18-105mm lens, with a minimum aperture of 3.5 and I really want to pick something better. I am a novice photographer and I’m interested in Astrophotography as well as Nighttime scenic photography.

I sat, huddled in the cave, wondering if the stars would ever creep out on that cloudy night. I jumped up from where I was huddling up, and I knew that if I had any shot to make this photo work, it was now. I’ve waited all day for the sun to dip over the horizon, and now it’s time to grab my camera bag and start hiking. I examine the subject: will I be able to illuminate it with a light (like a tree, for example) or is it too far away or too difficult to light, in which case it’ll remain completely black in the photo (for example, a distant canyon or desert tower)?
I spent the night standing outside in sub-zero temps, waiting for the moon to be at just the right angle to illuminate the massive 8,167-meter peak.
The particular formation was difficult to illuminate evenly because the top of the arch reaches 148 feet high. After about two hours, I finally began to recognize the landmarks I’d memorized earlier in the day and managed to capture one of my favorite night sky images to date. While many of my shots only incorporate natural features of the landscape, I wanted to add a human element to this night shot. The tree I found, shaped by years of relentless winds on the rim of the Black Canyon in Gunnison, was perfect for the shot.
I spent the night photographing Delicate Arch in Utah, getting images of the arch in contrast with the Milky Way behind it. For this image, I took several shots during the night, and those frames that captured a meteor, I merged together to get a composite of the night. A range of lenses were used, including Sigma 15mm fisheye, Rokinon 14mm 2.8, and the Nikon 16-35mm f4. I believe art is very personal and everyone has different opinions but I find a bit of inspiration from these. But Almond is an artist represented by international art galleries and collected by museums.

Most of these lenses are manual focus lenses by Rokinon which also tend to be much more affordable than their autofocus Nikon counterparts. The D3100 may not have spectacular light collecting abilities, so make it so you are photographing the Milky Way, not light pollution.
I’m trying to figure out if using a FX lens on a DX body would effect my shutter speed enough to make it not worth it. Aside a Genie mini which mark uses for motion, he uses quite an interesting camera+lens combo. Mark uses LR timelapse which almost magically ramps the exposure between the various exposure settings. It was the Milky Way, after all, that I was hoping to photograph that night, while light painting the kiva in the foreground. The wind picked up and started howling, blowing sand, dust, rain, and hail all over the place.
It’s guaranteed to make a memorable night shot — but it’s still a lone tree in a wide-open desert. Its height means it requires significantly more light painting at the top than the lower portions of the arch to achieve an even spread of light.
I knew it was going to be a challenge finding the tree in the night, so I made sure to memorize nearby landmarks to help find my way. The idea in my mind represented the symphony of man and nature, the integral relationship between us and the natural world we live in and the interconnectedness of mankind with our environment. As I was just about to leave, I thought it would be fun to get a self-portrait in the setting I love most — outdoors, lost in the vastness of nature and night.
The photographer is very calculating in his process and seems to thoroughly plan out his shots. I really should have applauded the mysterious light source illuminating the moon-backlit face of Mt. Additionally, most of the Rokinon lenses are sharper and tend to exhibit less coma aberration than their Nikon counterparts.
It is possible to capture the entire Milky Way arch in a single shoot using a certain lenss? I’m trying to decide whether to try the Samyang (=Rokinon in the UK) 14mm or the Sigma Art 35mm next as all the 20mm seem to be problematic. If you are strongly hooked on either Nikon OR Canon, you may wanna look away, as Mark shoots a 5Dmk3 with a 14-24 Nikon lens. LR time-lapse is free for sequences of up to 400 photos (around 16 seconds at 24FPS), and costs 99€ for a full fledged licence.
My camera was already on its tripod, so I figured I would open the shutter just to see what happens as I curl into a ball to stay dry. Usually just a few seconds of light is enough, but with my camera all the way down to ISO-400, I quickly calculated that I would need several times the average amount of light needed to paint at night. The second the sun goes down and you’re walking around in pitch black with a headlamp that only gives you a 10? visual in any direction, the simple act of finding that tree might well be the most challenging task of the night.
On a moonless night, the mountains would have been lost: black silhouettes against the starry night in the background. I set up my camera and light, set off the trigger, and quickly ran under the arch to stand for this image.
I knew the intensity of the lightning would require a much lower ISO than usual for my night shots, so I dropped the camera all the way down to ISO-400 (usually I stay around 6,400 for night shots), and stopped the lens to F5 (usually I’m at 2.8).
I was running left and right, painting everything I could, trying to remember how much light I had applied to different areas in the cave so that the exposure would come out evenly. Then, I think about how the lighting will affect the subject, where the Milky Way will be in relationship to the subject, at what angle the moon will appear (if at all that evening), where light pollution from nearby cities might show up in the photo, and countless other elements that don’t need to be accounted for in your standard daytime travel photography.
Also, he is providing a glimpse into places on this planet in ways that most don’t get to see very often.
If you’re willing to learn how to use manual focus, Rokinon lenses are spectacular performers.
Or should i take multiple images each time and stitch them to create a panorama afterwards? I had no idea if these settings were appropriate, as I’d never tried taking photos from the middle of a lightning storm before.
It also gives a preview of the pan before you actually invest 6 hours into a timelapse only to realize that your egg timer did not end the rotation where you wanted it to. Here I was in a very remote location in Canyonlands National Park, alone in the darkness of night, and a massive thunderstorm was rolling in my direction. The shot was more amazing than I ever could have imagined… what a reward for such effort to capture the shot. I waited for the next bolt of lightning, which flashed only moments after the first but seemed much, much closer than the first.
