One of the first things you need to decide when using a digital camera is whether to shoot in RAW or JPEG file format. Some photographers prefer to shoot RAW because of the extra flexibility this file format offers; others prefer to shoot JPEG because it means they dona€™t have to spend so much time on their computers afterwards. The downside a€“ and there is always a downside a€“ is that saving both takes up valuable memory card space. There might be times when you want to take photographs to e-mail, or for a website, but also need prints at a later date. Even if you generally shoot only JPEGs, there are occasions when you might want to shoot RAW and JPEG simultaneously simply because you want back-up and peace of mind.
Capturing RAW and JPEG images together can be a real advantage if you are shooting tethered to a computer. This is especially important if you are using one of the Canon WiFi units to transmit images wirelessly back to your computer.
The details you provide on this page will not be used to send unsolicited e-mail, and will not be sold to a 3rd party. I thought you need to configure the camera first and every picture taken will then be in raw. I only shoot in RAW, but i spend weeks in front of computer after the shoot to correct every single photo using Aperture 3 from apple.
It is a lot of work to correct every single photo, but the results are much better than jpg from camera. After spending most of the morning sifting through the Magic Lantern forums, I’ve figured out how to install Magic Lantern on my Canon 5D Mark II (note that it is the II, not the III). I installed ML many times already, but there’s no way to find the M (Module) menu and the overall look of the ML menu is completely different from the image shown here. Of course, after adding the Module, you gotta reboot the camera then you’ll see it appear under Movie. 3)if i install camera raw files on this firmware and boot form new card should i upgrade firmware? I think cause I had some nightly build files on there once and went back to stable 2.3 thats where the issues was. The software is very early in development, but at least one person that has shot with the camera and firmware is quite impressed. Some content a€“ such as product descriptions, recent product launches and some technical articles a€“ is also available in German, Spanish, French, Italian and Dutch.

By shooting both RAW and JPEG together, you can get the best of both worlds a€“ an image that you can tweak endlessly in RAW software, and one that you can print out straight away without the need for conversion on your computer. Inside the church you set the camera white balance to a€?Tungstena€™ for available light shots of the service. If all the images were shot as JPEG files, you might be able to make some corrections to the files in Photoshop, but the colours will not be perfect.
The set-up allows you (and anybody else involved in the shoot) to check the images immediately on your computera€™s much larger screen.
You can download the JPEG files to your computer, while the RAW files stay on the CompactFlash card. Although these wireless transmitters are able to transmit at up to 54mbps, in practice they can only transmit at the maximum speed of your network, which may be much slower if conditions are less than ideal. Set the width and height to your desired resolution (your maximum resolution will depend on the camera model and speed of your CF card). I spent the whole morning carefully shooting scenics, only to get an error message from Raw2DNG that meant that none of the files could be used. Just a quick questions…when you set your resolution, is there a way to pick resolutions other than the preset numbers? I might just try installing a fresh copy again of ML and start the whole process to see how it goes.
EOSHD notes that the camera has hardly any moire or aliasing in early tests and the ISO performance is terrific.
Choose your language from the list above and all content that is available in your language will automatically be displayed in your language, otherwise the default language will be English. In fact, with most EOS digital cameras you dona€™t have to make that choice a€“ you can shoot both simultaneously.
You might want to send a few of the images you have taken to friends and relations by e-mail without delay, but also make some quality prints later. However, if for any reason you need to tweak the contrast or exposure more than you are able to with your JPEG files, then youa€™ve got the RAW files as back-up.

Then you rush outside to start taking pictures of the couple as they came out of the church a€“ but forget to reset the white balance to a€?Daylighta€™. However, downloading RAW files to your computer can be quite slow, especially if you are shooting in bursts. Downloading JPEGs to your computer is much quicker than downloading RAW files, which means you dona€™t have to wait as long for the images to appear on the screen. Sending large files across a wireless network is never lightning fast, so minimizing the size of the file you need to send will ensure the best network performance, while leaving the high-quality image files on your camera for working on later. It is HUGE file and no compression format, and raw data without much processing is dumped on media, usually CF flash. If all goes well, you’ll eventually see a screen with green text saying that you can restart your camera now. You’ll need to repeat this process with each CF card that you want to use with Magic Lantern. Some work have been done on it, so I’d loved to find a build giving the 500d raw module. But when I load modules I get an error and I cant select the raw option or anything for that matter. Once it’s all installed on the camera shouldn’t it be fine to just throw in any card? The larger pixels on the 15mp sensor really do make a positive difference over the 18mp sensor that we’ve had for years now. All EOS digital cameras (except the EOS D30 and D60) can save both RAW and JPEG files to the CompactFlash card at the same time. Before each RAW file was converted, you would have been able to change the white balance from a€?Tungstena€™ to a€?Daylighta€™ and the final prints would have shown correct colours (above right). SD usually not suitable to store RAW format because only CF are fast enough to handle huge files. WA¤hlen Sie in der Liste oben Ihre Sprache aus, damit sA¤mtliche darin verfA?gbaren Inhalte automatisch entsprechend Ihrer Wahl dargestellt werden. And if your camera has card slots for CompactFlash and SecureDigital media, it is possible to save RAW files to one and JPEG files to the other at the same time.
