Before getting on a plane for a vacation in Monaco recently, I knew that I wanted to do something different from the previous ‘holiday highlight’ videos that I’ve done before.
In order to achieve an 80’s look, I had to make my sharp DSLR footage look like it was filmed with an old-school over the shoulder RCA camera. There are several After Effects plugins that would give my desired look, but I wanted to get it to look as realistic and genuine as possible, and the use of a generic plugin seemed like a cop-out.

The folks at National Geographic just did a solid favor for all the adventurous outdoor photographers out there. After a lot of speculation and a juicy tidbit here and there, a more complete spec list and first photo of the much-anticipated Canon 5D Mark IV has leaked. Recently I got a message from a person who said that they liked my pictures, but unfortunately they don’t have a "photographic eye." This inspired me to write the following article about basic aesthetics and their relationship to photography. VSCO today announced the launch of its new Open Studio, a free-to-use massive studio space in New York City. The multi-aperture computational camera is an exciting technology that's emerging in the world of photography, and it appears that Nikon wants in. If you wanna capture quality product photos on the cheap, this short little DIY tutorial is going to be a great resource.
Want to see how a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer responds to a request for free images in exchange for "credit" from a major news corporation? This photo shows what Sports Illustrated photographer Simon Bruty packed for the Rio 2016 Olympic games, the 8th Summer Games he has covered. Lightroom is a very powerful tool, and this quick timelapse by filmmaker and photographer Bart Oerbekke demonstrates how a series of simple edits were able to really bring one of his landscape photos to life. Yesterday I spent my morning taking some photos in New York City along the Hudson river with my 4x5 camera.
Animals stealing action cameras is nothing new—monkeys, seagulls, and foxes have all gotten their 15 minutes of fame this way. News Corp photographer Brett Costello was robbed of $40,000 in camera gear at a cafe in Rio a few days ago. After showing you how to make a tripod using a piece of string, I’m going to go a little more surreal this time by explaining how an old frying pan can be used to get dramatic low angle images.
Former Russian Olympic swimmer Evgeny Korotyshkin usually reserves his Instagram for posting pictures of swimming events or selfies with his medals.
After a lot of awkward talking into a camera, I finally managed to finish my video tutorial on shutter angle! In addition to the video I have written up the following tutorial to go into a few more details on shutter angle and why it is so important.

Have you ever taken a video with your DSLR and it ended up looking more like some cheap home made clip rather than high quality film?
To understand why changing the shutter speed during filming is a bad thing, we first need to discuss the effect shutter speed has on your video. The shutter speed of your camera controls how much motion blur you will see in every single frame of video footage. Most of the time, we are used to seeing a certain amount of motion blur with our naked eye – just try to swipe your hand in front of your face and you see what I mean. I was reading up about the shutter angle and I notice your placement of the shutter disc up at the corner of the frame differs from the pictures in both wikipedia’s and this article on the cinematic look. Yeah, it seems that most explanations of shutter angle show the rotary disc shutter attached in the middle of the frame rather than at the corner.
AWESOME explanation of this concept for someone who wasn’t around using cameras when there were rotating shutters on things! The easiest way to get enough light is to open your aperture all the way to 1.8, that is usually enough. I don’t understand why shutter angle determines the film like motion blur and not the shutter speed. I knew that I wanted to do something different from the previous ‘holiday highlight’ videos I had done before we got on the plane.
In order to achieve an 80’s look I had to make my sharp DSLR footage look like it was filmed with a shitty over the shoulder RCA camera. We were only in Monaco for a few days and despite having an amazing time, the footage I got wasn’t particularly exciting. Then I burned the film to a DVD, and plugged the DVD player into the back of a dusty old VHS player. The whole process probably took a day from start to finish and I’m really pleased with the outcome. They put every US Geological Survey (USGS) topographical map from across the United States on one easy-to-navigate site and made them easy to print out at home.
A 60TB drive would be massive by any standard, but the latest Seagate SAS drive is mind-blowing for one other very important reason: it's a solid state drive. In it, you see how an $8 IKEA table turns into a full-fledged product photo booth with just a few modifications and some creative foam board placement.

Louis Post-Dispatch who won the Pulitzer Prize with his paper this year for his coverage of protests in Ferguson, Missouri.

Then yesterday, while covering an event at the Olympics yesterday, Costello spotted the thief pretending to be him. Photographer Aaron Anderson has put together a lighting tutorial that will show you how he uses one light, a black flag, and a white card to capture beautiful, dramatic headshots.
But when he was robbed at gunpoint yesterday in Rio, he posted a very different photo: a picture of the gun-wielding teens who allegedly robbed him. While there are a lot of steps taken in post-processing to make the footage look sleek and polished, one simple principle you can utilise right now to improve the quality of your videos is shutter angle.
Unless the amount of motion blur in the video is similar to the amount we see in our every day lives, the footage will not feel natural to us. Shutter angle is just a function of shutter speed and frame rate so shutter speed DOES control motion blur. We were only in Monaco for a few days and despite having an amazing time, the footage I got wasn't particularly exciting. There are several after effects plugins that would give my desired look but I wanted to get it to look as realistic and genuine as possible, and the use of a generic plugin seemed like a cop-out. Last Friday, Carson was contacted by what appears to be a CBS account on Twitter that regularly Tweets requests for image usage. I had one sheet of film left, and I noticed that some nice-looking clouds were developing over the Hudson.
Our brain will perceive the differences and distance us from what is happening on screen :? Other times we receive an adrenaline rush and suddenly everything we see and hear appears were sharp and rich in details. If neither of that helps your only option unfortunately is to add more lights into your scene because even good DSLR cameras (and good lenses) hit a limit eventually when it gets too dark. I think it should be noted, in order to get the desired shutter speed, nice motion blur, but not an overexposed footage, in bright light or very sunny day, the only solution is to use a neutral density (ND) filter on the lens and regulate the amount of light that enters.
When I was a young, I found out that if you put a small piece of tape over the tab on a copy-protected VHS tape, you can record onto it, so I ended up ruining my sister’s copy of The Parent Trap. Sometimes is (especially if you want to shoot with a large aperture) even ISO 100 too much.
Then burned the film to a DVD, and plugged the DVD player into the back of a dusty old VHS player.
