You can twist your wrist twice while holding the Moto X to bring the camera app up, even if the phone is asleep.
There is also a Tap to focus option you can turn on from the dial, which allows you to tap on the specific area you want the camera to focus on before it takes the shot. You can automate some actions on your Moto X using Motorola Assist and you’ll find it’s a neat way to ensure that you aren’t interrupted at an inopportune moment. Driving: As long as GPS is turned on, your Moto X will detect when you’re in a moving car and automatically default to your driving settings.
Meeting: Any meeting scheduled in your calendar that’s labeled as busy will default to your meeting profile, though you can cancel it when the notification first pops up. Sleeping: Pick the hours you sleep (11pm to 6am is the default) to ensure that your Moto X remains silent and doesn’t pull you from your slumber.
One of the things that truly makes the Moto X unique is its ability to respond to your voice, even when it’s sleeping.
We’ve discussed tips for saving your smartphone battery before, but the Moto X also has a built-in battery saver feature.
It’s also worth using a black background because the pixels displaying black are effectively turned off and this can save a little extra battery juice.
If you use a pattern lock or a PIN then it’s a pain when you’re in the car or connected to your Moto X via a Bluetooth headset and the screen keeps locking. The proximity sensor turns the screen off when you hold the Moto X up to your face during a call to prevent accidental key presses. You could use Touchless Control to dictate your text messages, but there are other ways to speed things along.
Launch Google Now with your voice, without a single touch, in a manner similar to Google Glass.
Update 1: I came across another video on Vimeo, and it looks like you can personalize the trigger command for the voice actions.
Not long ago, it was tipped that Google could come up with a new design for the software home button that is featured on devices that don’t have a physical counterpart.
By now, you’ve probably spent a good enough time catching everything there is to catch in Pokemon Go.
Moans and groans around the world were heard when Niantic started bringing the hammer down on great third-party Pokemon GO companion apps like these. The latest version of the Android Wear app is notifying users of the Together watch face that Google will officially be shutting it down on Sept 30th, along with the reason why they’re doing it. The greatest trick that the Moto G has pulled off is blowing away the budget Android smartphone competition with a set of specs that is far in advance of what you can get anywhere else for the same money.
If you head into your apps and tap Moto Care, then you’ll find a wealth of help, interactive tutorials, and tips about your Moto G. If you have an older Android smartphone that you’re moving from, then it’s very easy to get all of your photos, music, texts, contacts, and even your call history transferred over to the Moto G. If you stick to Google Play for apps then you shouldn’t have to worry too much about malware, but it’s worth installing a security app. It’s worth taking the time to set up Android Device Manager or another app that can help you to locate your phone should it ever go missing. The camera on the Moto G isn’t the best, but it’s perfectly capable of capturing some good shots. It’s a good idea to set up some security to prevent anyone from accessing your phone, but Android also allows you to quickly access specific functions without having to unlock first. To take a screenshot on your Moto G simply hold the Power and Volume down keys at the same time. The traditional typing method of tapping each letter is available, but if you haven’t tried it, we really recommend checking out the gesture keyboard which allows you to swipe a path between letters without lifting your finger or thumb off the screen. You can make sure your photos and videos are automatically backed up and stored in the cloud for easy access anywhere.
You can back up contacts and other basic data via Settings > Accounts and tap Google then choose what you would like to sync. The Moto X is always listening for your voice and you can command Google Now without having to touch your phone first.

Wimberly also mentions that the device has laminated aluminum construction, something that will make for a better, stronger build quality while keeping a lightweight feel. With the Moto X, there’s an Active Display feature which flashes up the time and an icon for any notifications you have every time you move the phone.
If you want to turn it off or tweak what it shows then you’ll find it in Settings > Active Notifications and you can also tap on Manage notification types to decide what gets displayed. The feature is accessed via the Assist icon in your app drawer and it’s divided into three sections.
You can tell it to “Talk to me” so it reads text messages out loud or tells you who is calling. If you’re worried about missing an important call you can allow favorite contacts to get through, or tick the option to allow any caller trying twice within five minutes to get through. Go to Settings > Battery and you’ll see the Battery Saver option at the top and you can toggle it on or off. If you don’t have black wallpaper, just take a photo in a pitch black room with the flash turned off and set it as your wallpaper.
Pull the Moto X away from your face to bring the screen back to life or press the Power key. You also know that it’s getting much more difficult to play the game without purchasing in-game upgrades. As much as most of you want to believe the company is the big bad wolf, their reasoning is neatly summed up with 1 telling image. Since Motorola applied a light touch in terms of its own user interface, and the Moto G is close to stock Android, some of these tips are general tips for the platform, but a few will focus on the specific delights of the Moto G. You can search for whatever you want, check tutorials and guides by tapping the question mark at the top left, or view suggested changes at the top right.
Simply download the free Motorola Migrate app on your old phone and follow the instructions.
Check out our guide to the top three security apps on Android and you’ll find malware protection and anti-theft tools that won’t cost you a penny.
When you are on the lock screen you can swipe left to launch the camera, or swipe right to access lock screen widgets.
You’ll hear the shutter sound and see an animation that indicates you captured the shot and it will be available for sharing in your notification shade. It allows you to set your Moto G to automatically switch to hands-free mode and fire up your music in the car, observe your usual sleep hours to ensure that you don’t get disturbed, and automatically go silent during scheduled meetings. However, you do get 15GB of free storage on Google Drive, and in some regions there’s an extra 50GB on top, which is free for two years if you redeem it within 30 days of activating your Moto G.
The Dropbox app is free and you can install the free client on your laptop or computer and then share folders and files across the cloud. It can also enable you to send and receive SMS on your computer, locate your phone, and more. Sadly that’s not a standard feature of the Moto G, but you can try out Open Mic+ for a taste of what it’s like.
You may also want to check out our Android Jelly Bean tips, or find out how to reduce your data usage. The Moto X might not have the horsepower we were all expecting it to don before it was made official, but it still has us intrigued by pretty much every other aspect. You may be waiting to get your hands on the T-Mobile Moto X, which makes today an exciting day (kind of). This was contradicted by a leak that said the device would only be available from the Play Store.
There, you’ll find a plethora of colors and because the phone is assembled in the USofA, shipping times will be remain relatively quick. We’ve got some Moto X tips, ideas on how to get the most from your time with it, and shortcuts to make life a little easier. If you’re worried about privacy you can prevent the content of messages being accessible without your PIN or pattern.
When your battery drops to 15 percent, the saver will kick in to disable background data and reduce the screen brightness and timeout. Go to Settings > Security and choose Trusted Devices and you can pick paired Bluetooth devices that are trusted.

It’s basically a little clip that you can slip onto your shirt cuff or a bag strap and program as a quick way to unlock your Moto X. You can tap the Home button to hide the call display and open another app or search for something while on a call.
You’ll also find Personal Dictionary in here and you can add frequently used words and create shortcuts for them.
Thankfully, a newly-leaked animation shows it’s not as bad as we thought it would be.
It is already rapidly selling out across the world, and the US version will no doubt follow suit.
Taking a leaf out of Amazon’s book, Motorola also offers live help from an actual human being. We also have a full guide to make the transition easy for anyone switching from iOS to Android. There’s a long list of potential lock screen widgets covering everything from music controls to incoming messages. You’ll find the Driving, Sleeping, and Meeting options in the Assist app and you can configure it the way you want.
You can also use Dropbox to back up photos by firing up the app and going into Settings where you’ll find a Camera upload option.
The app is not perfect, but it is free, it allows you to activate Google Now without touching your phone, and you can change the activation phrase from “Okay Google” to whatever you like. Be sure to stay around as we’ll head to New York for a close-up with the thing this Thursday! It will be available on every major carrier, as well as unlocked and in developer versions. And if you are interested in buying the T-Mobile Moto X, try not to totally destroy that refresh button!
You’ll see it at the top of the screen and you can swipe up to go straight to it, swipe left or right to put your Moto X back to sleep, or swipe down to unlock your phone.
You can take calls by saying “Answer” or reject them by saying “Ignore.” When the Moto X first detects that you are in a car you’ll also get the option to tell it you’re not driving, in case you’re a passenger.
It uses NFC and you simply tap your Moto X on it to activate it and set your unlock pattern or PIN. To add a word while you are typing, simply press on the word below the text field in the suggested words box when it pops up after you type it, and it will say Touch again to save, do so and it will be added to your dictionary.
Even though the Custom option would suggest that you can alter the sliders yourself, you actually can’t. Just tap the Chat or Call options at the bottom of Moto Care and you can have an instant messaging chat or a phone conversation with customer support to get the help you need. If you find that you love the idea of Assist, but you want more power, then check out an app called Tasker ($3), as it allows you to automate all sorts of functions on your Moto G.
You’ll also find an option labeled Personal dictionary and you can alter the words your phone suggests while you type in here, so it’s worth adding a few that you use frequently to help speed that typing along.
Swipe from the left and you’ll get a dial of options including your flash, HDR, and everything else.
You can also allow anyone who calls twice within five minutes to get through, and this is potentially a clever way of ensuring you don’t miss an emergency call.
If you want to tweak the settings beyond the presets then you’ll have to snag a third-party equalizer and use that instead. You can swipe to the right to bring up your menu of options for everything from HDR to Geo-tagging. You can pinch to zoom and you can also pinch out to go to a film reel view which allows you to quickly delete photos or videos by swiping them away up or down.
