There are three different techniques for landscape photography: Representation, Impression and Abstract. Impression: In this technique photographers use some techniques to show some unrealistic photos to the viewer.
Abstract: In this technique, each and every part of nature is viewed as graphical elements by the photographer. There are no fixed rules in photography, but there are guidelines which can often help you to enhance the impact of your photos. These guidelines will help you take more compelling photographs, lending them a natural balance, drawing attention to the important parts of the scene, or leading the viewer's eye through the image.
Once you are familiar with these composition tips, you'll be surprised at just how universal most of them are.
Imagine that your image is divided into 9 equal segments by 2 vertical and 2 horizontal lines.
Placing your main subject off-centre, as with the rule of thirds, creates a more interesting photo, but it can leave a void in the scene which can make it feel empty.
We are surrounded by symmetry and patterns, both natural and man-made., They can make for very eye-catching compositions, particularly in situations where they are not expected. How many times have you taken what you thought would be a great shot, only to find that the final image lacks impact because the subject blends into a busy background? Because photography is a two-dimensional medium, we have to choose our composition carefully to conveys the sense of depth that was present in the actual scene. Emphasise your scene's depth by including interesting subjects at varying distances from the camera. The world is full of objects which make perfect natural frames, such as trees, archways and holes. Here, the surrounding hills form a natural frame, and the piece of wood provides a focal point. Often a photo will lack impact because the main subject is so small it becomes lost among the clutter of its surroundings.
Cut out all unnecessary details to keep keep the viewer's attention focused on the subject. With the dawn of the digital age in photography we no longer have to worry about film processing costs or running out of shots. Digital photography allows us to experiment with different compositions until we find the perfect one. Many professional artists paint a variety of paintings centering around the same subject or theme. I’ve found that watercolor paint requires a lot of mixing to get a good-size puddle suitable to pour. But the most important thing liquid acrylic has done for my painting skill is give me the confidence to paint beyond the background, and pull my half-painted masterpieces out from under the bed. The foliage close to the house appears very detailed, but is actually only a play of color, shapes and values. To delineate the foliage in the foreground, I used my familiar background painting techniques. Steps 1 to 4: These steps demonstrate how to draw the shapes and proportions of the still life objects using line. Steps 5 to 8: These steps illustrate how to render the three dimensional form of the still life using tone. TECHNIQUE: In any still life, you should start to draw the objects as if they are transparent wire frame forms with visible lines of construction. NOTE: This see-through drawing technique uses vertical and horizontal lines of construction to help you to draw convincing ellipses and to balance the symmetry of cylindrical forms.
TECHNIQUE: When composing a still life, try to introduce the qualities that make an interesting arrangement. NOTE: A transparent wire frame approach to sketching the still life helps you to organize the composition of the group. TECHNIQUE: Once you are happy with the shape, proportion and composition of the still life, you can erase the lines of transparent construction. TECHNIQUE: Now lightly sketch in the shapes of any shadows or reflections onto each object. NOTE: The more care you take over the accuracy of these marks, the easier you will find the next stage of the drawing - the Application of Tone. TECHNIQUE: The second stage in building up the tone focuses on the spaces between and around the objects. NOTE: The drawing of the light and shade between the objects must be treated with as much importance as the drawing of the objects themselves.


NOTE: The biggest problem at this stage is maintaining a balance of tones across the whole still life so that no object appears too dark or too light. TECHNIQUE: Finally, you focus again on the spaces between the objects, deepening their tones and increasing their contrast. NOTE: You need to be careful in balancing the tonal values of the objects and the spaces between them to ensure that you create a unified image.
Still life has provided a platform for artists to explore their relationship to the objects that inhabit their world. Photographers don’t add any special effects or props for these shots, but the weather and lighting plays an important role in this technique. However, there are are number of established composition guidelines which can be applied in almost any situation, to enhance the impact of a scene.
The rule of thirds says that you should position the most important elements in your scene along these lines, or at the points where they intersect. Some cameras even offer an option to superimpose a rule of thirds grid over the LCD screen, making it even easier to use. Another great way to use them is to break the symmetry or pattern in some way, introducing tension and a focal point to the scene. Our viewpoint has a massive impact on the composition of our photo, and as a result it can greatly affect the message that the shot conveys. The human eye is excellent at distinguishing between different elements in a scene, whereas a camera has a tendency to flatten the foreground and background, and this can often ruin an otherwise great photo. You can create depth in a photo by including objects in the foreground, middle ground and background. By placing these around the edge of the composition you help to isolate the main subject from the outside world. She was influenced at an early age by her Disney-Artist Grandfather and the works of Norman Rockwell, Andrew Whyeth and other prominent artists and illustrators of the time. As my skill level evolved, I constantly searched for a magic ingredient to help me improve my paintings. This pigmented acrylic is finely ground to take on the consistentcy of ink, and flows easily through an airbrush.
But I finally decided that if I wanted to get anywhere as a painter, I’d have to bite the bullet and finish the painting that was under my bed.
What could be less intimidating than covering the whole piece of paper with paint simply by pouring on the pigments and letting the water mix them? To save time, I began using Luma Liquid Watercolors – a medium that’s actually bright, transparent dyes.
To do this, I quickly pour three diluted colors of paint onto very wet watercolor paper, then tip the paper so the excess water and paint run off.
I get so excited with the result that I find myself using the experiment as background for a representational painting.
The brightest blossoms were simply a single drop of flame red dropped onto damp paper with a touch of yellow ochre. For example, to create an underwater atmosphere, the splashing surf, or a misty sky, I’d use a spray bottle of water to slatter the paint, rather than traditional painting.
In my painting, I felt I needed more flowers in the garden than were portrayed in the photograph.
Students will learn basic techniques such as shading, controlling tones, composition and drawing methods. Like learning scales and keys in music, in this class we will cover the building blocks for great drawing. It teaches you how to look at objects and see them like an artist - with a perceptive awareness of their outline, shape, proportions, tone, color, texture, form and composition.
This technique helps you to be fully aware of the shape of each individual form and its position in relation to the other forms.
You need to be aware of the abstract structure of your arrangement: its rhythms and contrasts of line, shape, tone, color, pattern, texture and form.
It makes it easier to see the shape, position and proportions of each object in relation to its neighbours. This will leave you with an accurate visible outline of each form and the confidence that all the objects are positioned correctly.
In this step, some basic tones are lightly applied to each object to help build up its three dimensional form. The shadows cast beneath and around the objects add as much to the definition of their shapes as does the shading on their surfaces. There are many different types of line - straight, diagonal, curvy, zigzag, radial etc - and each can be used to enhance our photo's composition. Rather than just shooting from eye level, consider photographing from high above, down at ground level, from the side, from the back, from a long way away, from very close up, and so on.
Thankfully this problem is usually easy to overcome at the time of shooting - look around for a plain and unobtrusive background and compose your shot so that it doesn't distract or detract from the subject. Another useful composition technique is overlapping, where you deliberately partially obscure one object with another.
The result is a more focused image which draws your eye naturally to the main point of interest. Take advantage of this fact and experiment with your composition - you never know whether an idea will work until you try it. But they can often prove to be spot on, and are worth at least considering whenever you are out and about with your camera. She has the unique ability of recalling the fairytale aspect of her childhood memories to add a little magic in her paintings. However, I believe and teach that emotional content, not paint media, makes for a successful painting. Benefits include lightfastness, bright color with the initial wash, no color lifting when dry, diluted soft effects, crystal-clear transparent glazes, the ability to cover up mistakes, and, when the paint is still wet, the ability to perform all watercolor techniques.


When I started in watercolor, I avoided painting the center of interest in my paintings because I feared making a major mistake. To my surprise, I had learned the necessary techniques for painting details from my background painting experience.
I find that when I plan more than two paintings, I’m not so inclined to paint tightly.
I began experimenting with Engle’s technique by using any media that would allow water to be its agent. I leave the paint on the paper for a short time, just long enough so that it lightly stains the paper.
When dry, acrylic can’t be removed, but it can be painted over to cover mistakes or bring out an interesting area. I used one drop of paint from each bottle to make black and painted the details on the house using a Robert Simmons white sable No. With several transparent glazes over tissued-out clouds, you can create a powerful sky or, by tissuing-out trees, creat an unlabored landscape. So I looked through my gardening magazines and found a great photograph of a flowering bush.
We will learn the differences between contour drawings (line drawings) and drawing with value. In Beginning Drawing 2 we will hone our skills with line and value but also explore local value concepts, one and two point perspective, and ideas for creating the illusion of depth working with detail. While in high school I took an art class to avoid taking some other class I didn’t want to attend. It is important to sketch the objects lightly as this makes it easier to change any mistakes and erase any lines of construction. Notice how the counter-change of tones between the objects and the spaces takes over from the use of line to define the forms of the still life. My first full-sheet flower painting had a wonderful background with leaves, flowers and stems weaving in and out of light and shadow. I have a so-what-if-I-make-a-mistake attitude that turns every painting into a learning experience. Along with watercolor, I’ve used acrylics, inks, watercolor dyes, gouache, and, most recently, liquid acrylic. I then painted the trunk, branches and foliage of the tree using the basic watercolor technique of painting light to dark. After the apint has dried, I painted my planned composition over and around the underpainted background. To complete the garden, I painted around each plant with a dark value before painting the details of each bush.
Other fundamentals will be taught such as understanding different drawing tools, creating gray scales, different techniques for creating value, reductive drawing, various paper surfaces for effect, and many other tips and insights.
With the light constantly shifting we will learn to capture the impression of the light before it fades. We will further explore using basic shape and lines to understand the basic form of an object. We want to draw in a way that is more representative of an object, or perhaps express a certain idea.
