Take into account that the capabilities of lenses can differ from camera to another, with the magnification power behind a lens generally being greater on a digital camera as compared to on a 35mm film-based camera. Once you hear about fast and slow lenses, reference point has been made to a lens’s maximum aperture, which is the maximum amount of light that a lens can let in. Not like a fixed-focal-length lens, a zoom lens often provides you with the diversity of a range of focal lengths all rolled right into a single flexible lens. If the lens utilizes aspheric lens elements, then you can rest happily with the know-how that your lens will help produce sharper photos and help keep lens weight to a minimum. Lenses using internal and automatic focusing also keep lens weight down thanks to less moving parts, and of course enable faster focusing.
Recent CommentsSubba Rao on Alibaba And The 22 Billion Dollars: What It Could Mean To Market LiquidityRamana on Mr. Much has been written on the topic of Macro photography for those photographers fortunate enough to own a DSLR with macro lenses – but what about if you own a compact point and shoot camera? Aperture – once in macro mode some cameras will not allow you to make many other adjustments but if you are able to play with your aperture settings it can be well worthwhile to do so. Composition – remember some of the basic rules of composition like the Rule of Thirds. Well, I am not an expert on macrophotography, but I would like to share my modest aknoweledge. I am about to buy a camera specifically for Macro, to get shots of my jewellery for the my website. I’ve done OK with the camera I have, but i really would like to achieve sharp close ups, with an out of focus back ground.
Several people have recommended the Cannon Ixus to me, but I can’t seem to work out which one would be the best as 95% of the shots will be Macro. Very cool, I’m just considering doing some macro stuff to get me away from weddings and trying to choose between a dedicated macro lens for my dSLR or putting some macro filters on my Canon SX1. Can anyone recommend a good book or dvd for close-up & macro photography for beginners with a fuji bridge camera. Check the latest shots as this album is a collection of everything I shot while experimenting and learning. Im wishing to purchase a point and shoot camera, that is auto with manual overide and can do close up photography of the tawny frogmouth family ,lizards and ants that reside in my garden. I didn't like your last line where you said that it's not possible to take life-sized or bigger photographs. I am a beginner to the digital side of photography, and one thing I wish to relate, which is most important to the person wanting to take either P+S or DSLR shots is "time," You do not do this in a rush.

My first picture of the Night Sky taken with an Olympus OM-1 SLR camera on tripod on Kodachrome 64. Photographing the night sky requires nothing more then a digital single lens reflex (DSLR ) camera and a tripod. The Big dipper is the easiest constellation to see - the stars have been circled to see them better. TIn this photo the Milky way extends right down to the horizon, The Crossing resort, Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan.
When you spend time looking at the night sky especially on a moonless night you begin to see satellites flying overhead and you will also likely see several meteors that streak across the sky. Andromeda Galaxy, a satellite passing over head and the finer streak is from a falling meteor or shooting star. Aurora Borealis reflecting off Prelude Lake near Yellowknife in the NWT - notice the Pleiades star cluster, also called the Seven Sisters. Comet Kohoutek - November 1973 outside of Calgary - note the Pleiades star cluster on the left side of the picture.
Lightening over Cochrane - photographed from the highway above town in the early morning hours. If you have a telephoto lens 200-400 mm, you can use it like a telescope to photograph the moon. Lunar Eclipse, 300 mm Telephoto lens, Nikon D300, ISO 800, 1 sec Feb 20, 2008 on a tripod - I also used a cable release to reduce shutter vibration. Left is my photo of the sun taken with a Celestron C6 telescope (1500 mm F10) and my Nikon D700 camera attached, ISO 800, 1\320 sec and on the right a photo of the sun from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory - both on Nov. Things that will make shooting at night easier include a small flash light or head lamp, fine gloves or mitts, some star charts to find your way around the sky, a warm drink, a comfortable chair, a set of binoculars and a good friend. Another interesting subject to photograph is the alignment of planets with the moon - conjunction.
Although I focus primarily on nature photography, I am always amazed at how many outdoor photographers ignore the night sky.
Star party (gather ing of astronomy enthusiasts) at Grasslands National Park - astronomers are teaching Park staff the constellations who in turn will teach visitors to the park.
Astronomy enthusiasts often use red lights to keep their night vision and if they have laptop computers they usually cover them with red acetate. There are many considerations photography enthusiasts need to take into account when choosing a DSLR lens for landscape photography.
Shown below is an example of a landscape photo, shot with a wide angle lens that had a focal length of 17mm. Wide angle lenses can also be used to give more depth to an image, especially if you are standing or laying at a height lower than the landscape you are photographing. The wide angle lens has created a 3D effect with the grass at the foreground being emphasised and just as much in focus as the sky above.
The normal focal length (41mm) of the lens, emphasised the background elements more so than the lilly pads in the foreground. This is a good all purpose lens that goes from ultra wide 17mm, all the way to a normal focal length of 85mm. Currently selling for $250 this is also a good all purpose lens, going from 18mm at its widest focal length to 70mm at the other end of the scale. Telephoto lenses use a narrow field-of-view and are best suited for close-up shots and portraits, and wide-angle lenses have a wider field-of-view which is good for indoor images and landscapes. A simple guideline is that a fast lens lets in a lot of light, while a slow lens lets in less light, which defines how your pictures will look. Macro mode is generally symbolized with a little flower and when selected it will tell your camera that you want to focus on a subject closer to your lens than normal (the minimum distance allowed will vary from camera to camera – consult your instruction manual to find yours). Keeping your camera still not only improves your shots (getting rid of camera shake) but it allows you to play around with different settings without losing your composition.
As we’ve covered in our Aperture tutorials, the main thing that aperture impacts is the depth of field of your shots. If your camera allows manual focusing select this option and manually focus on the part of our subject that is the main point of interest. Make sure your image has a main point of interest and place that focal point in a smart position in your image in order to draw the eye of your viewer. Make sure once you’ve taken it to take a good look at it on your LCD, zooming in to make sure that your focusing is sharp.

First of all my camera is a Canon SX20 IS, with macro and super macro capability, however I did find that the best way for work with this camera is to choice 2X teleconverter, so you will work with a 56 MM focal equivalent, and then turn on the standard macro mode; so you fill the viewfinder horizontally with a 24 MM wide ruler picture. How do you focus to small details correctly at first shot to avoid post cropping images which looses quality.
I do oral surgery and i need to photgraph it and i need Macro; i have a question ; Is The Camera called Bridge like Canon SX40HS Or Canon G12 good for that ?? I have always loved macro photography but thought I couldn’t attempt it with my Pentax K100 D Super.
I knew I was taking a chance on ruining the camera due to taking photos in my unheated garage here in Western Pennsylvania. Using the longest setting, typically 10 seconds, would allow any minute vibration to dissipate before the shutter is tripped. We’re looking for something a bit different to try and make our ranges stand out more? I am a building surveyor so i need a camera that can take fairly wide angle shots of building facades.
Would it be ok if i linked to you on my webpage about macro photography with just a point and shoot?

You can use almost any lens though its easier to start with a normal (50 mm) or wide angle lens and set it to its widest aperture.
As your confidence improves try and capture the milky way, meteors, comets and even lightening. If you have really good eyes you can see a double star in the handle of the dipper made up of two stars named Alcor and Mizar. When you take a photograph of it, the camera will capture more detail then you can see with your eyes (see below). If the lightening is off in the distance, set you camera up on a tripod and put it on B or bulb mode.
If you ever visit a star party be careful where you point your flash lights and be sure to run your bright car lights off if you approach at night - at least if you want to avoid being scolded. Look on the lens packaging box, if the f number is 4 and above then it will be efficient for landscape photography. The red square illustrates how a normal lens would have cut the image off short at either side. The wide angle lens has been used to its full advantage to give a feeling that you could simply walk into the picture.
It's important that you also check to make sure the lens you choose is compatible with your digitial SLR model. It's also not too large and heavy to carry and is priced around $520 USD at the time of writing this article. If you see a Canon lens with a red circle around the tip, you know it's considered better quality (sharper images) than those without the ring.
It is currently priced at $745 USD, which is what you would expect to pay for a quality lens.
The images won't be as sharp as those taken with the lens listed above, however it is priced well for the budget photographer or those just starting out. Macro mode will also usually tell your camera to choose a large aperture so that your subject is in focus but the background is not.
Choose a small aperture (big number) if you want a large depth of field with everything in focus or a large aperture if you just want your main subject in focus. Try to select a non cluttered or simple background for your main subject so as it doesn’t compete with it visually. As a result choosing a good time of day when there is plenty of available light is probably your best bet.
Try shooting at slightly different apertures, with different compositions and focusing on different points of your subject to see what works best.

The stars appear to move in an arc around the North star (outside the picture in the top right) due to the Earths rotation. Below I show a series of night sky photographs taken with a digital single lens reflex camera and various wide angle lenses. The Aurora is rare in southern latitudes, but can be seen on most clear nights outside of Yellowknife which sits under the Aurora oval (57-65° N). They are most commonly observed in the summer months at latitudes between 50-70° north and south of the equator. Comets are relatively rare occurrences, but are often mentioned n the news and you can find out more about them and their occurrence in a variety of astronomy magazines.
Hold the shutter down until you see lightening strike then release the shutter and check your LCD finder.
My backyard has lots of light pollution, but I have counted numerous meteors on summer nights and even photographed the Aurora in my backyard in the summer time (see below). If I know there is a good chance for Aurora I head out of town and search for a dark site - sometimes I am lucky, then again often I am not.
Meaning, when you take the photograph you will be getting more of the landscape scenery into each shot.
This focal length is good for times when you want the main emphasis to be on an object in the background, giving the photo a more natural look and feel. However, when compared to the photograph of the Goose Ponds, this image didn't horizontally get in as much of the landscape. Another advantage is its image stabilization system that makes taking hand-held shots easier. In macro photography you’ll probably want a shallow depth of field so select the largest aperture available. If you do need more light check to see if your camera allows you to pull back the level that your flash fires at. I cut off the handle part of a magnifying lens and secured the magnifier in the female adapter. As of right now I mainly leave the camera in auto mode and can then zoom and move the camera closer or farther away to get in focus.
My wife has a cannon 60 something with a truck load of lenses, takes nice shots but by the time shes ready to take the shot the moments passed.

With a DSLR you can preview your images on the LCD screen after shooting and make adjustments to the exposure if necessary.
Stars around the edge of the photo are not be sharp, by stopping the lens down 1 F-stop usually results in sharper stars at the edge of the photo, but you will need to double the exposure time. The thin streak is a Perseid meteor - certain meteor showers show regularly, the Perseid meteor shower has been observed for over 2000 years and appears around August 12-13 each summer in the northern hemisphere.
The Aurora is sometimes visible further south and you can increase you chances of seeing and photographing it by subscribing to one of the many websites that send out Aurora alerts. Images like this can be taken using a telephoto lens, BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE A PROPER SOLAR FILTER which can be purchased at most astronomy stores. Fantastic for those photographers who are just starting out and don't want to spend a fortune, yet still need good quality photographs. However, you do need to take into consideration that this particular wide angle lens doesn't zoom in as far (40 mm) as the other two listed above. Alternatively you might like to try diffusing it in some way (tissue paper or cellotape over the flash for example). Best way for illumination is with a couple of flashes, the first one on camera hot shoe faced to a white card and the second one (an slave unit) faced to another card on the opposite side. I went to a couple of camera stores yesterday and was told the sony 60 something with a 24-1200 zoom would be perfect, however the second shop said that the aperature size at the rate of zoom is very smaller so quality of detail is limited. To determine the best exposure try your camera in A or Aperture priority mode - some cameras work great this way even in automatic exposure mode. For critical focus, you can select a very bright star point your camera at it, turn on Live view so you can see the star on the screen, zoom in 10X and then adjust your focus carefully so the star is as small as possible with little or no colour fringing. Satellites sometimes have a pulsing light and tend to be uniform in thickness in the photos. Looking at the Sun directly through a telephoto lens when the sun is high in the sky can cause blindness and damage your camera's sensor. If you look on the box your lens came with when you make a purchase, you'll notice an f number. You'll notice many landscape photo's found throughout this website are taken with Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens. Another option might be to use some other source of artificial light or to invest in a reflector to help make the most of available light. Camera mode working in Av, diaphragm open to f 8 for great dephth of field since my pictures are equipment serial numbers. I hope to do other microphotography (insects, etc.) with this camera in addition to snowflakes. The second guy recommended a Lumix that holds the aperature in zoom mode, can anyone enlighten me? If you don't get good results try setting your camera to M or manual mode and adjust the exposure until the exposure looks right on your LCD screen. If you own a compact digital camera, you can experiment with night shooting mode, fireworks mode etc, but be sure to set the focus at infinity if possible. There is a simple formula to determine how long the exposure can be before you see star trailing, take the number 600 and divide it by the focal length of your lens and it will provide the maximum time in seconds you can expose the picture before seeing trails. If you leave the shutter open too long, you will get too much light from other sources so a little bit of experimentation is required. The only time you can photograph the sun directly with a telephoto lens is around sunrise and sunset as shown below. Some compact digital cameras can take great night shots, but most of them are not good for this type of photography.
If lightening gets too close, get inside your car and attach your camera to a window mount - see more information on window mounts here. Nikon) you can simply set them to infinity and they will be close to infinity focus) others such as those from Canon may focus past infinity so you need to check your pictures on screen and zoom in - if the starrs are not pin points - adjust your focus and check the photos on your LCD screen. Considering many landscape photographers will hike or bike into beautiful areas, the last thing you want is a lens that weighs a ton.
If you need longer exposures you can set the camera to B or Bulb mode which means the shutter stays open as long the shutter button is depressed. You will not be abler to see or focus on the stars through your viewfinder - at least I can't!
If you use Bulb mode it helps to have an electronic cable release so you can lock the shutter open. Some photographers use a magnifier finder to help them focus - this works for the moon, but I have not found it helpful for stars. You should check your focus about once an hour as it may change due to a drop in temperature or accidently touch the lens. Get both devices in darker environments and the differences will quickly become apparent. Now that we have that technical difference out of the way, we can start talking about the very nature of both contenders. A DSLR offers video versatility and flexibility that can’t be beat by a mobile device. Availability of lenses, accessories, modes and upgrades is what made DSLRs the go-to tool for many professionals.Smartphone modes and manual controls has been improving, but in many ways you are kind of stuck with what you get. Giacomo Mantovani does say the OnePlus One is better in ideal lighting, so it might be perfect for certain shots.
He also says there are reasons why DSLRs are where they are in the industry. What this test does prove is that OnePlus did an amazing job putting this smartphone together.
4K video is no insignificant feature; being able to handle it like a champ is even more impressive. After all, beating a full frame DSLR in ANYTHING is an astounding success, in and of itself. You have amazing camera technology, but APPARENTLY you don’t have the technology to have a convenient way to buy the actual smart phone!!!!!!! Then you add the price and it makes it the best bang for buck ever on a phone to be honest.
I would still be upset, that I couldn’t get one, but at least the false hope of actually getting one some day would be there.
This article is pointless Tha Watcher I don’t care what perfect conditions they set up. Seeing the price point of that Canon, it should outperform a CELL PHONE in the category of photography no matter what! Then, I tell you that never ever I will even think to shoot professional stuff on a smartphone. If professional equipment differs from consumer equipment, also in terms of price, there are many reasons, which in any way this video comparison pretends to argue. You also should calm down and consider that the 5D is not a cinema camera and not even a video camera, it is PHOTOGRAPHIC camera that shoot also nice (but very soft) videos, so its video function can be safely compared with a cheap smartphone able to shoot nice videos, as none of them have been created with the primary function of video recording. Would you prefer regretting of not having your DSLR with you in that moment, or indeed would you be pleased to have a 4K camera a€“ right in your pocket a€“ which is able to shoot amazing stuff (in a ideal light condition)? Nobody is saying to use this camera for professional works, the only aim of this video is to compare how well it performs (in a ideal light condition) respect a professional DSLR camera, nothing less, nothing more. I just would like people to take it easy and take this video test for what it is.By the way, I am about to publish the 4K version of the OPO footage.
I stopped wanting this phone because of the waiting list but now it’s back on my radar.
