Dominic Smith is a senior writer and content strategist for Rackspace Digital, the digital marketing infrastructure specialists. Digital marketing, like the “analog” marketing that came before it, relies on word of mouth.
Even in the age of BuzzFeed and go-viral formulas (online quizzes involving yesteryear celebrities apparently back in style), many brands still engage traditional ad agencies and marketing consultants to craft their message. Two companies that have broken away from the pack for their unconventional use of digital marketing channels are GoPro Camera and Tesla, the electric car manufacturer. Even though it’s mostly invisible in this video, it’s the camera and the GoPro brand that get most of the credit. The GoPro channel has a little under two million subscribers, comprised of sports fans, thrill seekers, photography buffs and just about anyone with a social media account. On top of that, GoPro systematically goes through the viewer comments on YouTube and answers any product questions that come up. And because they’re so confident you’ll watch their posted videos all the way to the end, they present you with a single “Subscribe” button at the conclusion of all that emotion-driven fun. The US auto market has lots of barriers to entry—capital investments in factories, the need for high-end TV spots, and incentives for dealers chief among them.
Unlike other electric cars like the Chevy Volt, Tesla has no dealer network and doesn’t engage in any traditional advertising. Despite the fact that a handful of states, including Texas and Virginia, have recently banned Tesla sales via traditional channels, the sleek electric cars are popping up on roadways all over the country.
Thirty-five high-tech storefronts across the US, Asia and Europe, do some of Tesla’s advertising for them. But journalists love to cover the story of the technology and the bullish entrepreneur behind it. Since state governments aren’t able to effectively ban online sales, Tesla enthusiasts can customize their rides, pay their deposits and wait 90 days for a delivery. While it’s true that Tesla and GoPro are at opposite ends of the pricing universe—$70,000 versus $400—the two brands have a lot in common. Your neighbors might buy a GoPro Camera for their upcoming whitewater rafting trip, but they’re less likely to start commuting in a Tesla any time soon.

German wedding photographer Rocco built this ingenious do-it-yourself photo booth using a Nikon, an iPad, and a remote shutter release.
The folks at National Geographic just did a solid favor for all the adventurous outdoor photographers out there. After a lot of speculation and a juicy tidbit here and there, a more complete spec list and first photo of the much-anticipated Canon 5D Mark IV has leaked. Recently I got a message from a person who said that they liked my pictures, but unfortunately they don’t have a "photographic eye." This inspired me to write the following article about basic aesthetics and their relationship to photography. The multi-aperture computational camera is an exciting technology that's emerging in the world of photography, and it appears that Nikon wants in.

If you're not comfortable with the idea of uploading photos to the Web with geotag data baked into the file, there are some easy ways you can scrub the data to protect your privacy. This photo shows what Sports Illustrated photographer Simon Bruty packed for the Rio 2016 Olympic games, the 8th Summer Games he has covered. Lightroom is a very powerful tool, and this quick timelapse by filmmaker and photographer Bart Oerbekke demonstrates how a series of simple edits were able to really bring one of his landscape photos to life. Want to see how a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer responds to a request for free images in exchange for "credit" from a major news corporation? Animals stealing action cameras is nothing new—monkeys, seagulls, and foxes have all gotten their 15 minutes of fame this way.
News Corp photographer Brett Costello was robbed of $40,000 in camera gear at a cafe in Rio a few days ago.
After showing you how to make a tripod using a piece of string, I’m going to go a little more surreal this time by explaining how an old frying pan can be used to get dramatic low angle images.
I really love the combination of street photography and rain, since rain changes the mood and the city completely. Capturing shots from otherwise impossible vantage points is now a cinch thanks to DJI’s Phantom 2 Vision+, a highly capable quadcopter outfitted with impressive filming capabilities. The GY-HM150 records to non-proprietary SDHC media cards like other ProHD models, but it also accepts new SDXC cards, which are currently available with capacities up to 128 GB. A new Pre Rec (retro cache) feature continuously records and stores up to five seconds of footage in cache memory, which helps prevent missed shots of breaking events. Other new features include an upgraded LCD monitor and color viewfinder, as well as a new 3.5mm input for use with optional wired remote controls for focus, zoom, iris, and recording functions. Manual controls on the GY-HM150 have been improved as well, with an iris dial next to the built-in Fujinon 10:1 HD zoom lens and six user-assignable buttons.
The GY-HM150 ProHD camcorder will be available in October at a suggested list price of $3,495.
While GoPro has virtually hijacked YouTube, generating over 400 million views of intrepid souls tearing down ski slopes, Tesla runs its own website with a marketing team of seven.
It’s not the camera you’re looking at when you watch the video of someone snowboarding, surfing or base jumping—it’s the spinning, whirring site of the ocean, mountain or sky. The brand becomes a delivery mechanism for adventure, for the idea of checking things off our collective bucket list.
By posting engaging content on a regular basis, the company is able to demonstrate value in becoming a subscriber. The conventional wisdom is that no car could compete without winning over the showroom floor. The music-cum-boomtown of Austin, Texas sees hundreds of Teslas on its streets, despite the statewide ban on their sale. They’re set up like Apple Stores, in upscale shopping malls and on strategic urban thoroughfares. With less than 10,000 cars sold worldwide, the Tesla name—and its stock price—carries more buzz than revenue (the company only recently posted its first quarterly profit).
In fact, because it’s relatively difficult to buy a Tesla (its $70,000 entry-level price tag notwithstanding), there’s a certain appeal of going rogue. Guyot Bernardo Arocho Jr from BJ’s Technology News Blog recently paid us a visit to check out the new Mac Pro in person, interview our own Michael Truskowski, and review the new workstation from Apple.

The Mac Pro is engineered with a single and larger fan that pulls air upward through the bottom intake. Guests can step on a pedal to trigger the shutter, which snaps a well-lit photograph (there’s a Speedlight on each side) and beams the image to the iPad via an Eye-Fi card and the app ShutterSnitch. They put every US Geological Survey (USGS) topographical map from across the United States on one easy-to-navigate site and made them easy to print out at home. A 60TB drive would be massive by any standard, but the latest Seagate SAS drive is mind-blowing for one other very important reason: it's a solid state drive.
In it, you see how an $8 IKEA table turns into a full-fledged product photo booth with just a few modifications and some creative foam board placement.

Based on the solid ergonomic design of the popular GY-HM100, which is used by thousands of photojournalists around the world, the GY-HM150 is built to handle demanding production environments.
In addition to relay mode for uninterrupted recording, the camcorder allows simultaneous recording to both memory cards for instant backup or client copy.
This greatly improves camera operation when using jibs and cranes, and even allows the GY-HM150 to be used in small studio applications. The camcorder ships with a shotgun mic and provides two XLR audio inputs with phantom power, plus manual audio level controls with audio meter.
They’ve both found ways to put that product front and center, while avoiding the high costs of traditional advertising. They just want your neighbors to post pictures on Facebook or Instagram when that first sleek Tesla drives by. As air passes vertically through the center of the device, it absorbs heat and carries it out the top of the device. Last Friday, Carson was contacted by what appears to be a CBS account on Twitter that regularly Tweets requests for image usage. Incredibly creative, he frequently manages to surprise and delight us with his unusual portrait assignments. A 3-axis stabilizer ensures your footage is smooth through both tight turns and turbulence, also helped by a GPS auto-pilot system that offers position holding, altitude lock, and stable hovering for distraction-free shooting. Plus, a new encoder and digital signal processor, adopted from JVC’s 700 series cameras, deliver improved HD recording and add support for standard definition (SD). With the GY-HM150’s new Clip Cutter feature, unwanted footage can be trimmed from the beginning or the end of existing clips in the camera, which reduces file sizes and conserves space on the media card.
