A new research conducted by Japanese scientists from the Hokkaido University Graduate School of Fisheries Sciences found that a chemical in the wakame kelp may be extremely efficient against body fat.
The brown pigment in wakame is called fucoxanthin and reduced both body fat and "bad" cholesterol levels in obese mice.
The findings of the study have been presented at the American Chemical Society meeting held in San Francisco. However, medical experts cautioned that tests have been conducted only on rats so far, therefore, trials in people are also needed until it can be stated for sure that the brown seaweed is safe for use in anti-obesity programs.

Wakame (Undaria pinnatifida ) is a brown seaweed widely consumed by Japanese people and scientists found in trials that the brown pigment in the kelp has anti-obesity properties by reducing fat in individuals. Wakame intake led to a 5 to 10 percent reduction in abdominal fat and also caused the reduction of the "unfriendly" cholesterol in rats' bodies by stimulating their livers to produce DHA.
Scientists who carried out the research stated that this could be a breakthrough in the world's struggle against obesity and the fucoxanthin compound can be further offered to overweight and obese people in pills or supplements.
The possibility of it being side-effect free is attractive but it is a long way away from being anything resembling an anti-obesity pill.
