People on simple low-carb diets tend to be less concerned about the other macro nutrients (protein and fats) and eat them in any proportion they want. The LCHF diet takes this idea one step forward by significantly increasing the fat percentage in one’s diet, which is supposed to force the body to use fat as energy. I’ve sold a few loaves of my paleo bread to people on this diet recently and it started me thinking about the difference between the paleo diet and the LCHF diet.
For example, artificial sweeteners are generally discouraged in the paleo diet because of potential health risks.
And related to the point above is that the motivation for monitoring fat, carb and protein percentages is to get one’s body into a state of ketosis.
The last point is written about quite extensively in Jeff Volek and Stephen Phinney’s book, which states that high carbohydrate diet locks a person into a dependence on carbohydrate as the dominant fuel for exercise. Let's face it, there is no quick fix, easy answer, magic pill, short cut, cleanse, juice diet, low carb, high carb, low fat, high fat, no carb, high protein, Hollywood magic that will get you in shape and keep you in shape. Initial body composition and follow-up to determine your current body mass, lean mass and body fat; your caloric needs to reach your goal, and of course,  at the end, how much you have transformed! For me, nothing beats a gorgeous rib-eye or sirloin steak, cooked so that the meat is rare but the fat is translucent and brown on top.


Low carb high fat means you don’t have to follow that cliched advice of removing skin from poultry, and chicken does taste so much better for it! So we can’t have traditional sugary desserts when on a low-carb diet, but who cares when we can have double cream instead! I realise that this post is a shameless ode to fat, and reading it alone is probably enough to give a heart attack to a low-fat advocate.
LCHF works if you are very strict keeping your carbs low – then you can indulge in having high fat foods. LCHF suppresses appetite so although you would eat high-calorie, high-fat foods, you would be likely to consume less calories overall.
When on strict LCHF, your body will eventually switch into ketosis, and start burning fat for fuel instead of carbs.
The DASH diet, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension is currently recommended by the American Heart Association. A 2008 study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that among 88,517 women who were followed for 24 years, the DASH diet was associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke in middle age. The 22-person volunteer panel that chose the diets included Brian Wansink of the Cornell University Food and Brand lab, Dr. They have been popular in recent years and even my rice-loving mum would tell my brother not to eat so much rice if he wants to get rid of his tummy fats. Eric Westman, said a high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet not only produces rapid weight loss, but also combats epilepsy and reverses type 2 diabetes. David Perlmutter, author of Grain Brain, told me the low-carb ketogenic diet prevents — and in some instances reverses — Alzheimer's disease and ADHD.
Jeff Volek, author of The Art and Science of Low-Carbohydrate Living, told me the ketogenic diet reverses type 2 diabetes, prevents heart disease, and causes fast weight loss without hunger.


Westman, director of the Duke University Obesity Clinic, is pleased that mainstream media is finally debunking the myth that eating fat makes you fat and sick. Double cream plus a bit of sweetener forms a base of many low-carb sugar-free desserts, and definitely fills the void.
If you are not bothering to restrict carbs, then eating extra fat as described above is likely to lead to weight gain. Rib of beef is another favourite – basically a gigantic rib-eye joint – lots of fat and utterly delicious (read more on roasting beef). However, it does taste better when the skin is crispy, so make some criss-cross scores on the skin and gently fry duck breasts skin-down for about 5-10 minutes, spooning the fat out of the pan. News and World Report added diets to its suite of rankings and the panel has named the DASH diet the best overall diet of 2012.
But in the paleo world, canola, which is a genetically engineered hybrid derived from rapeseed, will not be found in our cupboards because it is highly processed. Atkins, Keto) are also high in fat, allowing the most indulgent and hedonistic meals while still losing weight. Lamb shoulder or neck and pork belly also have plenty of fat – I think the best method for those is slow-cooking.
Bone marrow is basically fat but it tastes utterly delicious and absolutely melts in your mouth. The diet also has to be high in fat (around 70% of calorie intake) rather than high in protein because excess protein can be converted into glucose, which will kick you out of ketosis.
