Holland America's ships afford a traditional cruising experience with modern touches that don't feel overbearing.
The line offers a wide array of daily activities, which include enrichment programs like cooking classes, wine tastings, mixology classes, art events, themed trivia games, fitness classes, Digital Workshop seminars, movies and other special interest events during the day. Holland America has introduced some innovative options, including new partnerships with Afar, BBC Earth and UTrip.
Holland America has always paid attention to the culinary arts in its dining and enrichment offerings.
Another signature space is the line's Explorations Cafe, which debuted on the line's Vista-class ships and has since been expanded to other vessels in the fleet. All cabins offer Mariner's Dream bedding and Euro-top mattresses, Elemis Aromapure bath products, complimentary fresh fruit, no-fee 24-hour room service, bathrobes, nightly turndown service and more.
If you had to pick one word to describe Holland America Line, that word would be "venerable." The brand is arguably the most historic and tradition-laden on the seas. The line was originally named the Netherlands-America Steamship Company, but it soon became known as the Holland America Line because it carried great numbers of immigrants from Holland to America.
One year later, Carnival Corporation acquired Holland America Line, which remains headquartered in Seattle. Fifteen ships comprise Holland America's fleet, which is divided into five classes -- soon to be six, when the line's newest 99,500-ton ship (the first in a new Pinnacle Class of ships) launches in April 2016.
Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam, which make up the line's Signature Class, are the largest ships in the fleet.
The Rotterdam Class, which was spearheaded by 61,849-ton Rotterdam in 1997, was designed to show off traditional Holland America at its best.
Maasdam, Ryndam, Statendam and Veendam make up the Statendam Class, the smallest of Holland America's mid-sized ships.
Unique in its own way is Holland America's Prinsendam, the only ship in the line's Elegant Explorer Class. In 2003, Holland America invested more than $500 million into its "Signature of Excellence" program, designed to enhance all aspects of the cruising experience, and the upgrades are ongoing. Since early 2009, Veendam, Rotterdam, Ryndam, Statendam and Maasdam have all undergone extensive dry docks as part of the program.
Holland America has long had a reputation for catering to a well-heeled but somewhat traditionally minded crowd. I went with Holland America because I had never cruised with them and had been told they were the best. For more than 140 years, Holland America Line has been a recognized leader in cruising, taking our guests to exotic destinations around the world. Today, Holland America Line's fleet of 13 modern classic ships offers more than 500 sailings a year visiting all seven continents.

As a global company, Holland America Line is challenged by the many miles that separate the parts of our team. We strive to recognize the valuable contribution of our employees and embrace their diversity as we make every effort to strike a positive and healthy balance between personal life and professional goals. We are proud to share some of the organizations and publications which have honored us with awards and accolades. Holland America Line is widely recognized as a leader in the premium segment of the cruise industry. Celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2013, Holland America Line has carried more than 11 million passengers from Europe to the New World and to vacation destinations across the globe since its founding. Holland America Line began in 1873 as the Netherlands-America Steamship Company, a shipping and passenger line. The company's first ocean liner was Rotterdam, which sailed its maiden 15-day voyage from Rotterdam to New York City on Oct. By its 25th anniversary, Holland America Line owned a fleet of six cargo and passenger ships. The line was a principal carrier of immigrants from Europe to the United States from the 1880s to the 1920s, taking 850,000 passengers to new lives in the New World. In 1971, Holland America Line suspended its trans-Atlantic passenger trade and offered cruise vacations full time. Holland America Line recognizes its executives for their contributions of time, talent and resources through their service on nonprofit and community boards. Following is a partial list of organizations that have recently received contributions from Holland America Line.

Please note, with the exception of the Reduced-Fare Cruise Policy, contributions are made by invitation only and unsolicited requests are not accepted.
Holland America Line's legacy of cruise travel is one of expanding minds and hearts with experiences of the many cultures that enrich our world. Building on the extraordinary efforts of individual employees within our Holland America Line family, we've developed programs to reach a variety of organizations with aid, donations and service. As Amsterdam pulled away to begin my seven-night cruise to Alaska, there was no better place to watch the downtown Seattle skyline fade away than from the comfort of one of the ship's classic teak lounge chairs, glass of Champagne in hand. From a perch on the lower promenade deck, as some of the more ambitious fellow passengers walk pre-dinner laps on the open-air deck, it was obvious that HAL's long-standing oceangoing traditions have been blended with modern amenities and services.
Size-wise, Amsterdam, which spends summers in Alaska and the remainder of the year sailing a world cruise and extended journeys in Australia and the South Pacific, is solidly in the middle of the Holland America fleet. Amsterdam continues to get small upgrades but is not, at this point, in line to receive the whole Signature of Excellence package. On a recent seven-night Alaska Explorer cruise, the majority of passengers were in the 50-plus range. Attire during the day is casual, and on a recent cruise to Alaska, jeans and khaki pants were standard. The automatic tip for passengers staying in interior, oceanview and verandah cabins is $12.50 per person, per day. The service and food is amazing on this cruise line.Every crew member was helpful and inviting.
Providing poster sales, Linen Backing, Restoration and Framing services  to the Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Dallas regions since 1994.
The refined fleet holds onto numerous traditions, such as afternoon tea and extensive art collections, but keeps the onboard ambience fresh with innovative dining and entertainment options.
Nightlife is fairly understated with predinner cocktails generally being the liveliest time.
Afar destination guides will provide exclusive digital content (on the line's website) for up to 400 ports, as well as "authentic recommendations" for top attractions, new destination content for shore excursions and more.
King's Blues Club experience -- which debuted on Eurodam in March 2013 -- is already a HAL favorite, also available on Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Rotterdam, Westerdam, Zuiderdam and Koningsdam when it launches.
It offers both traditional set-time, same-tablemates dining, as well as "As You Wish" dining, which allows passengers more flexibility in choosing when and with whom they eat.
It's akin to an onboard coffee house with a coffee bar selling for-fee beverages, computer stations with Internet, a fantastic library, card and game tables, and comfortable reading chairs that face out to the sea.
While cabin categories remain fairly standard, the line has introduced spa cabins and lanai cabins (with back doors that open directly onto the wraparound promenade outer deck) on select ships. Its first ship, Rotterdam, set sail on a voyage between Holland and New York in 1873, and, today, Holland America ships sail all around the globe. The company concentrated on the transatlantic passenger trade, as well as on commercial freight shipping until the 1970s. The company's headquarters then moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1983, in order to consolidate operations with Westours, an Alaska tour company in which Holland America purchased a controlling interest. Ships in its fleet -- since the 1890s and continuing today -- bear the suffix "dam." Most of the names are inspired by actual dams that traverse the rivers of the Netherlands.
They are also the newest, with 86,273-ton Eurodam having launched in 2008 and 86,700-ton Nieuw Amsterdam not long after in 2010; each carries roughly 2,100 passengers.
Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Volendam and Zaandam are perhaps the most opulent ships in the fleet, with gleaming dark woods, ornate dining facilities, grand atriums and original artwork throughout. Launched between 1993 and 1996, these four vessels epitomize the line's vintage charm as the oldest in the fleet.
The line continues to modernize its fleet with features like the Culinary Arts Center for cooking demos and classes, Dancing with the Stars: At Sea ballroom program, An Evening at Le Cirque alternative dining offering, the Master Chef's International Menu in the main dining room (conceived by a council of noted land-based chefs), an expanded Greenhouse Spa with new treatments, Digital Workshop computer classes, Explorations Cafe Internet center-library-cafe, new spa and Lanai cabin categories, upgraded cabin amenities like Euro-Top mattresses, expanded Club HAL kids facilities, private tour options in port, custom shore excursions and new menu items utilizing sustainable seafood. Perhaps that's due to the line's insistence on maintaining its traditions with elegant afternoon tea, ballroom dancing, tennis courts and timeless decor throughout the fleet. If you are looking for some of the most spacious and comfortable ships at sea, award-winning service, elegant dining, extensive activities and enrichment programs and compelling worldwide itineraries, you've come to the right place.
Cruises include both popular and less-traveled ports in the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, Mexico, South America, the Panama Canal, Australia, New Zealand and Asia — as well as unique voyages to the Amazon, Antarctica and our extended Grand Voyages.
Whether it's donating shipboard items to an orphanage, cleaning up a neighborhood park, walking 5K onboard to raise funds for cancer research, or donating money to disaster relief, Holland America Line and our employees share time and resources to make a difference. Ongoing training and adherence to rigorous standards are vital to preserving and protecting our guests, our employees and the environment. With employees located throughout the world, we are committed to working together and sharing a common goal and vision. The company’s fleet of 13 ships annually offers more than 500 cruises to 415 ports of call in 98 countries, territories or dependencies. It became known as Holland America Line because it was headquartered in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and provided service to the Americas.
It also was providing service between Holland and the Dutch East Indies via the newly constructed Suez Canal. Among the most significant program enhancements is a convenient one-hour flight that brings Fairbanks, Alaska, and Dawson City, Yukon, closer together — replacing up to two days of motorcoach travel and a hotel overnight. The line re-created the legendary eatery’s whimsical ambiance and award-winning dining experience on-board. The menu showcases a selection of starters, soups, entrees and desserts from his land-based eatery. In addition, the line provides over 2,000 reduced-fare cruises annually to support charitable fundraising events throughout the United States and Canada.
This program, announced in February 2013, supports cancer organizations in North America, Europe and Australia: Cancer Council Australia, Canadian Cancer Society, Deutsche Krebshilfe (German Cancer Aid), KWF Kankerbestrijding (Dutch Cancer Society), Cancer Research UK and American Cancer Society.
Holland America Group includes Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and Seabourn, as well as Holland America-Princess Alaska land operations. A new 2,650-passenger Pinnacle-class ship is under construction and scheduled for delivery April, 2016. Two new 600-passenger ships are on order with deliveries scheduled for November, 2016 and spring, 2018. In 2003 he was named president and chief operating officer and became chief executive officer on Dec.

Previous to Mercer he served as senior vice president, chief human resources and communications officer of Mercer's parent company, Marsh & McLennan Companies. Ashford examines how technology and human networks can help bridge the skills gap, improve business performance, and lead to the betterment of society at large. He was named to the a€?Directorship 100a€? of the National Association of Corporate Directors in 2013 and 2014, and is a Purdue University School of Technology Distinguished Alumnus.
Both at home and abroad, we've been touched by people and places in ways that affirm our interconnectedness as a global community. From employee fundraising drives to cash and cruise donations to innovative philanthropic programs that each year invite the participation of 700,000 guests, we're working together to make a difference. We're excited about what we've accomplished and look forward to further developing our commitment to our communities-both near and far-in the yearsto come. After all, isn't sailing on Holland America, and Amsterdam to boot, all about reveling in the storied traditions of cruising? As part of its Signature of Excellence program, Holland America has committed to pouring more than a half a billion dollars into its fleet of 13 ships since 2003, upgrading staterooms, public spaces and shore excursions. Passengers on Holland America still have the option for a set-seating dining, though open-seating is also available. Built in 2000, it's smaller than the line's Vista and Signature classes of ships and carries 700 fewer passengers than Eurodam, the largest ship in the lineup. So, while it recently received Canaletto, Holland America's take on a casual Italian eatery, it will not be outfitted with spa cabins, an adults-only pool area or a new bar concept called Mix.
There were also a smattering of young families with small children as well as multi-generational groups of grown children traveling with one or both parents.
We ate at all of the dining venues and was pleased with the quality and variety of each restaurant.

It was a wonderful experience, we visited 46 different ports, in several places staying more than one night. Es un buque que ofrece rutas muy sugerentes, con escalas exclusivas y de larga duraciA?n, ideal para expertos cruceristas. All of the ships bear a similar look and feel with vintage-style navy blue hulls, understated decor with pops of color and artsy fixtures, classy dining venues, bold theaters and simplified pool areas (no waterslides or party stages) -- though its newest ship, Koningsdam, will include more modern features like an outdoor movie screen, main theater with 270-degree LED screens and more. However, numerous entertainment options run the gamut from production shows and live band performances to dancing, piano bar sing-alongs and occasional late nights in the nightclub.
In each ship's Queen's Lounge, passengers can enjoy music and entertainment straight from Beale Street in Memphis.
The line was a pioneer in introducing the alternative restaurant concept, with the introduction of Odyssey Restaurant (now Pinnacle Grill) onboard Rotterdam.
Its first purpose-built passenger ship was constructed in 1973, and, since then, the line has excelled in cruise vacation travel.
In 1988, Holland America purchased Windstar Cruises, operator of four- and five-masted, computer-guided sailing ships.
As the two youngest and newest sisters in the fleet, both ships also lean more toward the trendy side of traditional.
These ships introduced to the fleet more cabins with ocean views, expanded public areas and contemporary touches like glass-walled elevators. Originally built in 1988, the updated Prinsendam still has its Old World charm, with dark woods and brass accents throughout.
An emphasis on worldwide, often lengthy, itineraries also attracts an older crowd with the time and money for these extended voyages. We are committed to our mission: Through excellence, we create once-in-a-lifetime experiences, every time. As the internationally recognized standard for environmental management, ISO 14001 encompasses virtually every aspect of our ships' operations.
From one-day mini-vacations to once-in-a-lifetime Grand World Voyages of more than 100 days, the line visits all seven continents to call at a variety of exotic, tropical, historical, cultural and adventure-filled destinations.
The company has also reached an agreement to acquire the McKinley Chalets Hotel in Denali National Park with a goal to further develop the property and deliver the finest destination resort and experience in Alaska. Menus, wine selections, table decorations and the restaurant setting reflect an authentic Le Cirque dining experience.
Prior to that, he was executive vice president and chief operating officer for Radisson Seven Seas Cruises, and president and CEO of Seven Seas Cruise Line. Ashford also has held several other leadership roles during the course of his career, including group director of human resources for 90 countries in Eurasia and Africa for the Coca-Cola Company and vice president Corporate Center human resources and cultural transformation.
An active community supporter, he is on the board of directors of the Executive Leadership Council, the preeminent membership organization for the development of global black leaders; and for Streetwise Partners, which brings together low-income individuals and volunteer business professionals to develop workplace skills and employment networks. And today, we're both pleased and honored to provide assistance to those in need around the world, as well as to give back to our neighbors.
A pre-dinner drink in the Explorer's Lounge, made all the more sweet by the music of a classical quartet, can cap an afternoon spent getting a 75-minute hot stone massage at the Greenhouse Spa or watching a cooking demonstration at the Culinary Arts Center. The ship maintains the tradition of serving mugs of warm Dutch pea soup on deck to bundled-up, glacier-gazing travelers. Even on a full cruise, the ship rarely feels crowded, except for the lunch rush at the casual Lido Restaurant on sea days and the occasional, fast-moving line in the La Fontaine main dining room. According to a Holland American spokesman, passengers on Alaska cruises skew older than those on Caribbean itineraries.
Two evenings were designated formal, and while some passengers donned cocktail dresses, gowns, tuxedos and suits, others chose to opt out of the evening code altogether and stick to jeans or khakis. This poster has been linen backed and originally had two tears in the bottom right and top right corners that have now been repaired and retouched. Activities will include live musical concerts, photography classes and an interactive BBC quiz show. HAL also has recently teamed up with Billboard Onboard to add more entertainment in the Queen's Lounge. This signature fine dining venue has consistently offered excellent dishes inspired by the Pacific Northwest, but more recently it has expanded to offer "An Evening at Le Cirque," a once-a-cruise experience consisting of a tailored menu of French Continental cuisine, wine selections and decor from the land-based venue of the same name.
Features like Tamarind, the line's specialty Asian restaurant, and basketball courts instead of tennis courts separate these two from the others. Since Carnival didn't want the Holland America ships to compete as heavily with its own Carnival Cruise Lines, the Statendam ships were kept to a more modest size, ranging from 1,258 to 1,350 passengers.
But it also has plenty of modern amenities, including a nicely equipped Internet cafe with wireless access and a small but lovely Pinnacle Grill restaurant. But standard modern features like Internet cafes and alternative restaurants, coupled with superb kids facilities (Club HAL) and a growing entertainment lineup do entice younger passengers and families alike.
Holland America Line has been recertified to meet that standard again and again — in 2009, 2012 and 2015. The line currently has a new ship on order from Fincantieri shipyard for delivery in April 2016.
In January 2011 he was appointed chairman of Seabourn when the companya€™s corporate headquarters transitioned from Miami, Fla., to Seattle.
Previously he was vice president of global human resources strategy and organizational development for Motorola Inc., where he helped modernize the human resources function for the global tech leader.
Ashford holds a Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership and Industrial Technology from Purdue University.
The Sea View pool, aft of the Lido Deck, is a quiet retreat that feels like a private oasis. As the alternative dining trend continues, Holland America has added venues to several ships, including Canaletto (a family-style Italian option) and Tamarind (Asian-fusion).
Eurodam was christened in Rotterdam in 2008 by none other than the Netherlands' Queen Beatrix. Our commitment to it demonstrates our belief that the safeguarding of our guests, crews, ships and the environment in which we live and operate is not only the right thing to do, it is essential to the successful conduct of our business. An ornate clock in the three-level atrium is as much a towering piece of art as it is a way to get the current time around the world. Sure, you won't exactly find swimsuit weather en route to Juneau, but staffers graciously offer the perfect Alaska sunbathing accessory: a red wool blanket. For passengers wishing to do the cooking and not just the eating, Holland America, a leader in onboard culinary enrichment programs, offers Culinary Arts Center show kitchens for demos and hands-on classes. Nieuw Amsterdam, HAL's newest offering, was christened in 2010 by the Netherlands' Princess Maxima, marking the 11th time a member of the Dutch Royal Family served as a HAL godmother. Don't expect to see lots of children until the summer season, unless you're sailing on a shorter itinerary or during a holiday.
It's one of the first features you'll glimpse on the ship, and as you pass by it during your trip, it's a reminder that Holland America hasn't forgotten its roots. Passengers in the Pinnacle Grill and main dining room abided by the guidelines, but more casual attire was seen in the Lido restaurant and Canaletto. On Koningsdam, the Center also will serve as a farm-to-table dinner venue, available to book for an additional fee.
