To be perfectly honest, the TomTom Spark Cardio + Music frustrated me at first because therea€™s a bit of set up involved. I refer to my life as a juggling act because there are so many facets of what I do that need to be in constant motion.

Istanbul Life Org Shopping Tour is one of our most requested tours for the people who wants to nice & unique things for themselves or for the friends, relatives etc. When I stepped on the bobbing vessel heading for the Xisha Islands, two words that have frequently appeared in my daily news reports, I was expecting an arduous week on a remote island. However, after an exhausting 15-hour trip from Wenchang, Hainan province, I was astonished by the dreamlike light-green morning sea stretching in front of me as we approached the harbor of Yongxing Island. The spectrum of colors was more vibrant, more gasp-inducing than I had seen in the Maldives. It was a perfect start to the Xisha trip, in which my colleagues and I cast our media net, like fishermen, to gather stories of the island, the location of Sansha, the southernmost Chinese city which administers an area of about 2 million square kilometers in the South China Sea.
A marine affairs officer pointed out to me "how quickly clouds move here" - so there is not much rain on the island. Approaching vessels, waiting to enter the harbor turned their lights on, providing us with a fairytale vista as if the nighttime ocean was decorated just for us. It was impossible, with the dark vast sea stretching to infinity, and the waves serenading us as they crashed onto the rocks, not to be a peace. Many friends on land were curious about my visit there after I posted some photos on my wechat account - in their mind the Xisha Islands is a mysterious area, generally closed to the public.
I told them cruise ships have been sailing from Sanya, in southern Hainan province, to several islands in Xisha since April 2013. I checked the route of the only ship running from Sanya to the Xisha Islands, Star of Beibu Gulf, from Hainan Strait Shipping. Tourists will have a new choice in July, with a larger cruise ship from Sanya to the Xisha Islands set to start operating.
The city, he said, will develop some islands and reefs to accommodate a select number of tourists.
The sites open to the public and tourists will be islands and reefs that do not need a military presence, he added. Though far from the Chinese mainland, Xiao said, tourists will not face unreasonable charges, though the route is very popular. Food on the islands will be "definitely cheaper than on Hainan island", he said, adding that the Sansha government will pay close attention to tourism management, including pricing. During this period, the interaction between Tibetans, Manchurians, Mongolians, Muslims, the Han and the Qiang people - violent and peaceful at various times - has left us with hundreds of villages of historical interest and picturesque scenery, on high mountains, deep valleys, and along the tributaries of the Yangtze River.
After the Manchurian-dominated Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Tibetans and the Qiang people became the main residents of the Aba region, roughly as big as Scotland. The two ethnic groups, now comprising more than 800,000 people, account for about 80 percent of the prefecture's population. Speaking, after a boisterous Qiang dancing and singing performance to greet tourists at the entrance of his village, he adds: "We are also losing Qiangdiao," referring to a kind of ancient tower built exclusively by the Qiang people using rocks, mud and wood. The Qiang people are known as talented builders who can build sturdy dams, houses and fortifications with natural materials.
Isabella Bird, a 19th-century English explorer, writer and naturalist, who was the first woman to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, used to visit Aba and wrote about Qiangdiao in her book published in 1899 called The Yangtze Valley and Beyond, saying the castle-like towers added liveliness to the endless mountains. They were located at carefully chosen spots in and around the 300-home community, to ensure every inch of the vicinity was within an arrow's range and was under the surveillance of the sentries on the towers. Speaking of the Qiangdiao, while standing at the foot of the only remaining tower, Peng Zhao, the Party chief of Keku town, to which Dasi village belongs, says: "Few people would build these things today.
But, Peng and his colleagues pay special attention to protecting the old Qiangdiao in Keku, because "they see it as a symbol of Qiang architecture and, more importantly, a tourist attraction".
Echoing this view, Yang Zhiwen, a successful businessman and village committee director, who returned home in 2006 after having gone to work in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan, at 16, says: "The loss of Qiang culture is disturbing. Yang, who says he built a Qiang ethnic culture museum in Dasi as a tourist attraction, now contracts villagers' lands and employs them to plant plum, blueberry and herbs instead of potatoes and corn which they used to grow earlier. The annual income of the villagers has grown from 500 yuan ($77) in 2008 to 10,000 yuan last year, thanks to tourism and agriculture. Luo Jinyong, director of the Hanchuan Museum in Aba and a Qiang culture expert, says: "When compared with the government cultural protection project, the Dasi model is more sustainable and effective.
Luo says there are two explanations for the white-stone worship - one is that their ancestors made fire using it; and the other is that the ethnic group won a life-and-death struggle with it when the enemy mistook the white stone for snowballs.
A three-hour drive from Dasi along a meandering mountain path will take you to three Qiang villages in neighboring counties. Zhu Guangliang, an 81-year-old tribal chief in A'er, can pierce both his cheeks with a long steel needle, without bleeding. Some villagers can lick or walk with bare feet over red-hot iron bars without hurting themselves.
Speaking of these stunts, Zhu says: "These things were regarded as superstition during the cultural revolution (1966-76), and nobody wanted to learn how to do them.
Taoping Qiang village in neighboring Lixian county was one of the first spots to be developed by the government in late 1990s as a tourist attraction. The 98 houses in the village perched on a mountain slope above a river are connected through a roof, a water supply network and corridors. The village was built over a period of about 100 years, and looks like a castle from across the river.
Also, the fact that the Yang family can adjust the water flow that comes through the underground water network below the residence - something the other families in the village cannot do - indicates the family's status in the community, says Yang Dengfu, 60, owner of the house.
The mountain village has produced a number of scholars and senior-level civil servants in its 3,000-year history. In its current avatar, the dilapidated old village comprises 90 houses on the mountain, but there is also a new village of about 150 homes down the mountain. Guocheng, the former Party chief of Zengtou, who is now in his late 70s, attributes the village's educational success to its fengshui and the protection of various gods from the mountain, river and heaven. Now, Zhou hopes the village can attract more tourists, so that the young villagers understand that the past has value for their future.
A Qiang woman makes shoes in her courtyard while her husband weaves a bamboo basket in Heihu Qiang village in Aba. The village was founded in the Tang Dynasty (AD618-907) and its structures were built with nothing but rock, mud and wood.
The Tibetans learned to build Qiangdiao, and construct underground water networks from the Qiang people. The tunnel of the water network is wide enough for an adult to walk through so as to make it easy to dredge and repair. The villagers use water from the mountain springs to treat common ailments, as the water is believed to have medicinal properties as it flows through land which has herbs growing on it. Though the villagers are all Buddhists, they also worship the white-stone god, and pile quartz stones at important spots in and around their houses. Typically, the windows on the ground floor are small from the outside, but wide on the inside to protect the residents from strong winds. As for grain storage, instead of creating facilities underground as is the case with many remote residences and fortifications, Serku's architects placed the wooden granaries near the village gates. Locals say that this was done to prevent any enemy from setting fire to the village, as grains is a valuable asset in mountainous regions, particularly during long winters.
Meanwhile, despite the advent of tourism and creeping modernity, the Tibetans continue to follow their own rules when it comes to their arrangement of furnishings and daily indoor activities. Explaining their traditions, Motsai, a woman in her 60s weaving cloth in front of her house, says: "The village has become rich with tourism. For Tibetans living far from each other on the mountain, the local government helps them build houses and family inns at the foot of the mountain.
Yangrong village, a three-hour drive from Serku is one such a village comprising 42 Tibetan families.
It is located in forest near a river, and produces many kinds of mushroom, fruits and cattle products. Meanwhile, there are still some Tibetans residing in their old village of Shaji on the mountain. Many of Shaji's 314 residents are descendants of the Tusi, or the ethnic minority who were appointed by the emperors as autonomous administrative heads. The villagers attach great importance to protecting the environment and the buildings, because they still feel a sense of responsibility as Tusi is to protect the land, says Wang Xianzhang, the village Party chief. The general, who died defending the land against foreign invaders, is worshipped by villagers as a model and a patron saint.
In the massive earthquake in 2008, more than 20 structures collapsed in the remote village. But as the villagers were away praying in a temple when the quake struck, and nobody was killed in the disaster, which claimed nearly 100,000 lives.
Right:Motsai, a Tibetan woman in her 60s, is weaving cloth at her residence in Serku village in Aba.
A driving tour of France to promote tourism in Wuhan that began on Friday in Paris and will end in Nice would strongly boost cultural exchanges and bilateral ties between the two cities, organizers said. Zhang Xia, head of the Wuhan Municipal Tourism Bureau in central China's Hubei province said at the ceremony that Paris is a famous city for tourism and art and has a long relationship with Wuhan. Former tennis star li Na (in black) takes part in a friendly match during the opening ceremony for a driving tour of France to promote Wuhan. Since the opening of three direct flights per week between Wuhan and Paris in 2012, the more frequent contact has created new opportunities for exchanges and cooperation between Wuhan and France in many fields. France has become one of the top tourist destinations for Wuhan citizens in the last five years, Zhang said. Francois Navarro, general director of the Tourism Regional Committee of Ile-de-France region, said Wuhan is famous in France.
Michele Guyon, a specialist in tourism at the French consulate in Wuhan said it is more than 10,000 kilometers between China and France, but the distance seems invisible because of the close relationship. Part of the opening ceremony was the screening of a movie about the colorful lifestyle available in Wuhan and its scenery. The movie showed interesting activities in Wuhan, from traditional culture to modern sports events and historical sites. One of the highlights was the famous Yellow Crane Tower, which was built during China's Three Kingdoms period (AD 220-280).
It is considered a symbol of the city and is visited by 2 million tourists each year from all over the world. In addition to the driving activity, Wuhan is also preparing to welcome overseas guests to its Wuhan Open tennis tournament later this year. In 2014, 99 top players from 30 countries participated in the Wuhan Open, including Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep.
Geared towards international markets with its high-end services, the Wuhan Open annually becomes a point of attention of all China. Li, ambassador of the event, whose home town is Wuhan said, "I invite all of you to visit my hometown and watch the exciting games in September.
Located in the central region of China, Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province, is a megalopolis that in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. An important base of industry, science, education and a communications hub, it has a population of 12 million in an area that covers 8,494 kilometers. The city is a combination of traditional and modern culture, rich history and international development. In recent years, the city has accelerated its pace of internationalization through promoting its local tourism industry globally, launching world-class activities and propelling cross-country trade.
Since the establishment of the Sino-French diplomatic relationship 50 years ago, Wuhan has become one of the cities in China most favored by French people. It is a popular investment destination for French businessmen and has the largest number of French residents. Kawah Putih is a crater lake, which is like a wonderland and draws many domestic and overseas tourists. The active volcano, situated at an altitude of about 2,200 meters, has erupted more than a dozen times since 1826. Besides the volcano, situated at an altitude of 2,430 meters is Kawah Putih, a crater lake about 50 kilometers from Bandung. The color of the water in the lake - which changes from bluish to whitish green or brown - is subject to the concentration of sulfur in the water and the weather. Vendors in the area hawk volcanic mud, which is believed to help with skin problems such as acne and eczema. For a long time, local residents believed that the lake was haunted because birds disappeared after flying into the area.
Also in Bandung is the Saung Angklung Udjo - a center dedicated to preserving and maintaining traditional Sundanese arts and culture.
Nowadays, the angklung is often used in orchestras along with other instruments such as a guitar and percussion. After the music show, each member of the audience gets an angklung and the music director gives the audience members a music lesson.
As he says, music has no boundaries and brings us all together, no matter what age and nationality you are. In the end of the lesson, the members of the audience smile happily and dance with Indonesian kids onstage. Each weekend, Jakarta's street artists gather at Kota Tua (old town) and dress as various characters, including cartoon figures. Then, I see two artists in costumes who seem to seated in midair without any apparent support, but I fail to figure out how they do it. It's also good idea to stroll around the Pantai Indah Kapuk community at night to experience the city's hustle-and-bustle. There, my friends and I encounter a traditional snack shop that sells martabak, or pancakes. It is said that the snack originated in Sumatra's Bangka Island, and was first made there by Hakka immigrants from Fujian province. To make martabak, the cook spreads layers of butter, condensed milk and cheese onto the pancake.
Before we have time to work out how many calories the ingredients contain, the lure of the mouth-watering food overcomes us. One of the residents says he loves the snack but buys it only once a month to control his intake of sugar. From Jakarta, it is about an hour and a half to Putri Island, which is not far away from the Pulau Seribu Island.
In the water, fish swim among the red, blue and yellow reefs - resembling clouds, brambles and human brains. Animals such as squirrels that eat bananas, big lizards and bats are visible on Putri Island. A visit to a lounge gives one a feeling of nostalgia because one hears many popular Chinese songs from one or two decades ago. Taufik Nurhidayat, the ministry's deputy director dealing with familiarization trips for development of tourism in the Asia Pacific, tells China Daily that the country's unique selling points include beautiful nature, cultural diversity and warm hospitality. He says that to promote Indonesia as a destination in China, they participate in tourism activities, hold promotion events in major Chinese cities and organize familiarization trips.
Birds sing above yellow, red and purple wildflowers peeking up around flint shards and stone carvings.
Summer's heat will soon burn the spring colors away, and return the qaa or plains in Arabic to the basalt black, sandy brown sand and sky blue, says Yorke Rowan, an archaeologist who has spent the past seven years studying the dawn of human civilization in Wadi El-Qattafi, Jordan. He has learned that this desert was grassland with topsoil where long ago humans stalked herds of gazelle and built homes, corrals and hunting traps.
Semi-nomadic peoples built "Neolithic hamlets" used during seasonal hunting, shepherding and perhaps farming in the 6500 BC to 6000 BC era, Rowan said. Sixty kilometers from the nearest city, Azraq, Rowan and colleagues in the Eastern Badia Archaeological Project have mapped thousands of these 8,000-year old stone structures, aided by a 21st century technology. Rowan drives out across the plain to a launch site for a drone, built and operated by archaeologist Austin Hill.
From the air, peculiar shapes form on the slopes of the black mesas: some circular, others kilometers-long.
The large number of structures hints at an environment much more like the today's spring bloom.
Archaeologists across the Middle East are re-examining the basic assumptions of humanity's roots. For now, there remains so much to do with trowel and drones, that Rowan and colleagues named the valley "the land of conjecture".
We had just arrived at Daocheng Yading Airport, the world's highest civilian airport, 4,411 meters above sea level, which had just been blanketed by snow, something that seemed incongruous for us who had been in balmy Beijing, where short sleeved seemed to be all the go the day before. We changed into our down and wind jackets before getting out of the aircraft, and some of the passengers immediately felt the effects of altitude stress. An hour earlier we had been soaking up or merely tolerating the hustle and bustle of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, and here the dark brown, snowcapped mountains reclining on the horizon could not have presented a starker contrast. Yading is in Daocheng county, Garze Tibetan autonomous prefecture, in Sichuan and well known for its virgin natural environment and spectacular scenery. The three crowning glories of it all are the Xiannairi, Yangmaiyong and Xianuo Duoji peaks, each about 6,000 meters above sea level, blanketed by dazzling white snow, and with blue-watered rivers, lakes and lush alpine meadows all contributing to the majestic tapestry. One of the main reasons for our visit was much more earthbound: the first ever event in China put on by Skyrunning, an organization that puts on cross-country running events around the globe. The organization's name refers to the interface between the earth and the sky, and Yading was regarded as ideal venue for the event, given its superb mountain tracks. It has staged more than 200 events in more than 50 countries, and it says they attracted more than 30,000 participants.
The tracks used in Yading ran 29 kilometers through sprawling mountains and forests, giving those walking or running on them the chance not only to lap up the pristine nature but also test their physical strength. In fact, the rigors of the altitude left some of us breathless as we merely negotiated a couple of flights of stairs. Croft and winners of several international running events, such as the 2015 Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in the French Alps, were among the several professionals invited to offer their opinions and advice on preparations for the Skyrun event. After passing Chitu river, runners came across a small village, and then ran 12 kilometers through forest and a rugged botanical zone along glaciers and rivers. The most difficult part came in the final 4 kilometers where runners had to climb to 4,700 meters and double back to the temple to finish the race. But those who reached the top of the climb were more than amply recompensed with the spectacular view.
Wei caught the cross-country running bug early last year as she did some running in mountainous areas while she was staying in her hometown in Yunnan province. Her running photos have become popular in her WeChat friends circle, which, in turn, has fueled her enthusiasm for cross-country running. The Yading event impressed her, and what was particularly noticeable were the variations in track conditions, ranging from gravel to green moss, she said. Wei says she is also looking forward to similar cross-country events in Yumen, Gansu province, in September and Huangshan, Anhui, in January.
Easier transport, including the opening of an airport in Yading in 2013 and better roads linking the town to Kangding in Sichuan province have fueled the growth in tourism boom, he says, adding that most visitors travel there by car. In an effort to lure tourists the local authority has offered a concession that allows visitors to spread their visit to the area over two days, being admitted free the second day and paying 40 percent less for bus transport to the scenic spot on the second day.
The pyramid-shaped snow mountain, lake, meadow, multi-layered forest are a sure-fire draw for nature lovers, especially photographers, He says. But there are many ways to immerse yourself in the Indy 500 besides watching the competition on race day.
Though the race is named for Indianapolis, the track is located in the town of Speedway, a suburb of Indianapolis, and Speedway's Main Street is well worth a visit. The museum attracts some 130,000 visitors a year, but museum director Ellen Bireley says only about 25 percent are serious racing fans. Race cars on display show the evolution of technology and design, but the collection also includes motorcycles, passenger cars and vintage autos like Duesenbergs and a 1915 Stutz. You'll also learn about the Indy 500's origins: The track was built on farmland in 1909 as a "playground for the automobile", with an all-day race to show off what cars were capable of doing.
The track was owned at one time by World War I flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker (who raced cars before he learned to fly). You can take a narrated bus tour on one lap around the oval track or sign up for a grounds tour that includes the victory platform, media center, the famous brick strip kissed by winners and other stops. And then there's Speedway Indoor Karting, which, as the employees like to say, is "not your grandfather's go-kart". Another attraction is the Dallara IndyCar Factory, where visitors can explore interactive and hands-on exhibits about racing engineering and technology. A century after World War I, an archeologist exploring ancient tunnels in northeast France made a moving discovery - thousands of scrawlings by Allied soldiers, notably Australians, as they took a break from the hell of the Battle of the Somme.
Translation: Leslie Russel Blake, a lieutenant hailing from near Melbourne and fighting with the 105th Howitzer Battery who left his mark on the chalk walls on Jan 7, 1917. Archeologist Giles Prilaux has recorded nearly 3,000 bits of graffiti, mostly etched by Australians from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). They paint a vivid picture of young men sent to join a war far from home, something Australia celebrates every April 25 as Anzac Day to remember compatriots who served on the Western front, including the 11,000 with no known graves. For the past two years, Prilaux and his colleagues at France's National Institute for Preventative Archeological Research (INRAP) have painstakingly scrutinized and logged their finds, looking for clues of what life was like on the nearby Somme battlefields. Going was slow with the poor light in the tunnels said to date back to the third century, which also served as a refuge in a much earlier battle, the Thirty Years' War from 1618-1648. Little by little Prilaux's team found signatures, inscription dates, home towns, units and military serial numbers left by soldiers waging the bloody trench warfare that lasted nearly five months and saw more than a million casualties on both the Allied and German sides. Next came the detective work to unpick the identities and stories of the men who had left their mark in the 3-kilometer-long tunnels.
With help from the National Archives of Australia, Prilaux's team was able to determine that Leslie Russel Blake, for example, was born in 1890 in a suburb of Melbourne and died from shrapnel wounds to his forehead in October 1918. Before his death, Blake had been promoted to captain and, during his service with the Australian Field Artillery, was decorated with the Military Cross and a further distinction known as Mentioned in Despatches, according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Allsop's etching has proved to be crucial in understanding how the caves were used, dispelling the long-established view they were only employed for medical treatment. Cross referencing the infantryman's carving with his wartime diary, Prilaux was able to establish that he "came with several comrades to the Naours caves".
Focus next turned on how to enhance the graffiti's value while ensuring its protection, according to site director Matthieu Beuvin. He and Prilaux decided to leave all as is and open a small stretch of the tunnel to visitors. The site as already moved at least one Australian school group who made a recent "pilgrimage" ahead of Anzac Day, and "half the students ended up in tears", says Beuvin.

Another 3,000 Australians were in nearby Villers-Bretonneax to mark the 98th anniversary of the battle that liberated that town. A fledgling nation at the outbreak of World War I with fewer than 5 million residents, 416,809 men enlisted and more than 60,000 losing their lives on all fronts, according to the Australian War Memorial. The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau revealed a series of favorable policies at a forum in Beijing in late April. The bureau will offer special business prematching service for different visitors and every professional visitor can get $100 after finishing three business negotiations.
The Thai government will also provide business tour services by ensuring efficient custom and logistics services. China's MICE visitors to Thailand have ranked first in numbers over the years and this sector is now growing at an annual rate of 10 percent, according to Suwannasat.
The brisk export market in Thailand is behind the strong exhibition industry, Suwannasat explains. Local authority has launched a program to mix business with pleasure for them over the years. Usually MICE visitors stay for two nights for business and then get a third night covered by sponsors. They can spend the extra day treating their friends, going golfing and touring local factories, Suwannasat adds.
Shopping, spa and golf coupons and transportation information are likely to be added to the bureau's official WeChat account in future to draw in Chinese MICE guests. The country held 103 trade exhibitions in 2015 and is expected to draw in 189,000 professional international visitors and rake in $495 million in 2016.
Whenever anyone talks about Paris as a city of romance they are obviously not referring to those of its streets whose dank fragrance is that of an army barracks latrine. But forget these odd cases of odeur toilette, think rather of eau de toilette and just sniff the love in the air. Who could not be charmed, and envious even, seeing Parisians gathering in front of small galleries hidden deep in labyrinthine alleys and regaling the many art forms on display, and others - or even the same people - out on their morning rounds buying a baguette for breakfast and taking it home naked under the arm. And no matter how cold it is, it's as though the locals prefer to sit outside drinking bottomless cups of coffee, a fair few of them smoking as though there is no tomorrow and watching the world go by. I and a few of my friends have all been to Paris a few times, one living there for a few years, and when we went there as a group at the end of March we decided to see a few places around the city that are a little off the beaten tourist track.
So we headed to Chinatown, on the Left Bank, which is the spiritual heart of Paris's Chinese community, said to be the largest of any city in Europe. Our relaxed mood turned somber later in the day, March 22, when we heard that little more than 300 kilometers away in Brussels terrorist bombs had killed dozens of people, and French television was abuzz with debate about what to do about immigration. It occurred to me that all the people who appeared to be of Chinese origin in and around Chinatown earlier in the day - in their dress, with their shopping bags and their conversation - far from seeming like intruders were as much a part of the city's fabric as its art galleries, bakeries, the Champs-Elysees, the Seine, the Eiffel Tower and much more besides.
The next day the metro line that services Puces Saint-Ouen, in the northern suburbs of Paris, was doing its job and we boarded a train for the 6 kilometer trip. About half of those selling goods in this cultural melting pot seem to be of Middle Eastern or North African origin. We scoured stalls that sell fabric and women's clothes representing four decades from the 1950s.
After visiting the flea market, we took the metro back to the city center and the cobbled streets around Rue Montorgeuil and Rue Tiquetonne, another mecca for second-hand fashion, in the second arrondissement. On this particular day Paris had decided to turn wintry on us, and I decided to restore a bit of warmth to body and mind by buying a pair of mountain boots bearing the Land Rover logo, as well as a large cashmere scarf. The passageway still bubbles with shops selling expensive vintage fashion, and we looked in awe at the Chanel and Dior dresses and suits from as far back as a century ago, the pencil-thin waists resembling those that populate European period dramas. From there it was onto the Gare d'Austerlitz in Paris's southeast to take a train to the town of Blois, about 180 km southwest of the capital on the Loire River. The chateau was the architectural showpiece of several successive French kings in the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as their residences and seats of power.
In one of the reddest rooms, in 1588 King Henri III had his arch-rival, Duke Henri I de Guise, murdered by royal guards, and had the duke's brother, the Cardinal de Guise, killed the next day.
From Chateau Blois, we took a taxi to the nearby Chateau de Chambord, which you could be excused for mistaking, on first glance, for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry of Harry Potter fame. The chateau, almost like a small city, has 440 rooms, 365 fireplaces and 84 staircases, including a staircase reputedly designed by Leonardo da Vinci, a huge garden and a forest.
Hanging in and around chateaux, swanky shops, swish clothes and chic Parisians over a few days had obviously rubbed off on my friends, because soon they were acting like 21st century emperors and empresses. In the end I reluctantly jettisoned the boots in a hotel room, and the scarf I bought the same day may be lying in the lost-property office of a railway station.
Chateau Royal de Blois is the architectural showpiece of several successive French kings in the 16th and 17th centuries. The appearance of small buds on the branches and the infusion of color to the freckled trunks of Shanghai's ubiquitous plane trees are just some of the subtle ways Mother Nature announces the arrival of spring. The Shanghainese people call these trees "French planes" because it was the French who introduced the species to the city. The locals have since been so enamored with French planes that apart from Shanghai's famous nightlife scenes, the city is today also known for its beautiful boulevards filled with these trees. The age of the trees on a street are usually indicative of the number of tales present in the area.
Although the two-lane street, which stretches roughly 2 kilometers in the city's Changning district, is just a three-minute drive away from the bustling Xujiahui commercial area, the serenity in this area always reminds locals of what the city was like 20 years ago before a major population explosion. The area is still home to several two- and three-storey Western-style buildings that have now been covered with creepers, and these structures provide an enchanting juxtaposition to the local-style residential buildings, some of which were built almost a century ago.
Residents here also remember how the road would be closed to traffic as the motorcade for State guests passed through.
Another resident Wang Changxiong said he remembered the first State guest of the area being Haile Selassie I, the then emperor of Ethiopia, who was in Shanghai in 1971. Adjacent to Xinhua Road is Shaoxing Road, and this two-lane street that measures only about 400 meters is easily missed if not for the tall plane trees that tell of the area's equally rich history.
Located at No 27 Shaoxing Road is a huge villa built in 1936 that has been repurposed into a garden restaurant specializing in Shanghainese cuisine. Du Yuesheng, the crime lord who ruled the gangs on the Bund in Shanghai in the 1930s and '40s, once bought this three-story house for his third concubine Yao Yulan, a Peking Opera actress from Beijing. But these iconic plane trees are not exclusive to historical venues only as they can also be found in numerous other streets in Shanghai, including those that were built in recent years.
The Golden City Pedestrian Street in the Gubei community in Changning district is one example. Here, the road is flanked by old and new buildings, elegant cafes and quaint alleys between garden homes where residents jog and walk their dogs. These trees were later introduced to France and the French subsequently showed a stronger inclination to the species than the British. Since 2012, the Shanghai government has been recommending the best boulevards to view autumn leaves every year and these places would always be swarmed with locals, many with their sophisticated cameras in hand. Except for winter when the trees become bare, the leaves from these plane trees provide the cityscape with a dash of color in other seasons. Children in Shanghai have always seemed to be particularly fond of treading on the fallen leaves and the sound it makes evokes warm childhood memories for many people. A visitor takes a picture of the 618-meter-long thangka scroll at the Tibetan Medicine Museum of China in Xining, capital of Qinghai province.
Without perpendicular wall intersections, the scroll simply wouldn't fit in the museum's entire second story. Essentially, it's like designing an entire floor around amazing wallpaper - rather than the other way around, as the world usually works.
A security guard scouting for stragglers emerged to point us to the exit and then vanished. It took over 400 ethnic Tibetan, Tu, Mongolian and Han scholars from the Tibet autonomous region, and Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces 27 years to put the final strokes on the horizontally protracted, 2.5-meter-high masterpiece. The astonishing artwork renders a cosmovision that can perhaps be thought of a very different take than Stephen Hawking's on a "brief history of time", not only in content but also in presentation.
Our legacy literally unfolds across the scroll to show animals roving wild and then pacing in pens, while humans move from mud huts to brick buildings. The floor's only other display is The Great Book - a 1.5-ton copy of the 156-chapter medical code Tibetan intellectual Yuthok Yonten Gonpo compiled between 773 and 783. Silver, pearl and coral powders artistically present 2.5 million articles over 490 pages that took craftspeople and calligraphers more than four years to complete. Its superlative character may be better recognized if it weren't juxtaposed against The Great Scroll. Ultimately, and seemingly unintentionally, the Tibetan Medicine Museum of China is an art museum as well as an institution elucidating traditional healing. Yet it remains relatively unknown, despite containing the Guinness World Record-setting scroll.
The first floor is full of anatomy diagrams that signage claims have been used for two millennia. That said, some depict anthropomorphic creatures with, for instance, goat heads and snake bodies being swallowed by fish. Diseases are depicted as sword-fights with snakes, stabbings by blades and stings by scorpions. The diagrams about behavior, skeletal systems and poisoning also display instruments for bloodletting, surgery and autopsy. The Icefields Parkway, a scenic road in Alberta, Canada, attracts many road trip aficionados.
A tourist bus pulls up near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Trafalgar Square in London, or any other tourist attraction in Europe you care to name, and troop out a mass of Chinese, with cameras, selfie sticks and UnionPay cards at the ready. These are stereotypical Chinese tourists on a stereotypical tourist jaunt, one that will have them "doing Europe" in seven days and back at work on a Monday morning, ready to regale their workmates with tales of where they stayed, what they saw and what they bought. Now consider Li Xiaowei, aged 40, hunched over a computer in her Beijing home, admiring dazzling motor vehicles of all types, colors and models, before she chooses one of them and uploads photos of hers and her husband's driving licenses.
Li is one of a growing band of Chinese travelers who have turned their backs on package holidays in the company of strangers and embraced a way of travel that they can intimately share with their nearest and dearest. This travel comes in several types, including renting cars and staying in hotels, renting campervans or caravans and staying in camping grounds and buying a campervan or caravan for getting around.
The key word in all of these is independence, and according to China's Outbound Road Trip Report for last year many Chinese people are renting cars online, 28 percent of those bookings coming from mobile devices.
Among Chinese making road trips overseas, Chinese tourists last year spent the longest time on average in North America, a little more than eight days, and the shortest time in Southeast Asia, a little under five days, the report says, and many of those who made these trips were accompanied by their children, partners and parents.
As more and more overseas suppliers join the market, competition has become fierce, and prices are continuing to fall, he says. A Chinese mainland driving license does not qualify the holder for an International Driving Permit, but authorities and companies in many countries will recognize a Chinese driving license, accompanied by a notarized translation.
Li Bin says it is preferable to rent a car in advance because it is more expensive to rent on the spot, and the choice of vehicles is likely to be more limited.
Companies in overseas destinations that are popular for road trips are now working with partners in China. Last October, Meng Ni, 31, who works for a culture company in Beijing, and her husband did a five-day self-driving trip in Germany, and they spent less than 2,000 yuan ($310) on car rental and diesel, she says.
Germany is big, the cities they wanted to visit are scattered, and some scenic spots they were interested in are remote, she says, and they had to work out whether they should use the country's excellent train network or drive.
In Italy, to which they traveled from Germany, they visited Rome, Florence and Venice, and used public transport, because of the relative closeness of the cities to one another, Meng says. Some people who do road trips, particularly using campervans and caravans, say that they bring people together, but Meng says the Germany-Italy trip that she and her husband took suggested the opposite - that using a car in Germany reduced the chances for mixing with other travelers while using trains and buses in Italy increased their chances of rubbing shoulders with backpackers and other travelers. While doing road trips as a couple can be idyllic, adding a child or children to the equation, can add an extra layer of difficulty, even allowing for the joy that all members of the family may derive from their travels. Zhou and his wife took their daughter on a road trip in the United States in 2014, when the baby was 8 months old. As for older children, Xu Jihang, 41, a teacher from Guangzhou, Guangdong province, says it is better to travel with another family, so children have someone who can speak and understand the same language.
He counsels anyone traveling with children not to have them cooped up in a car for very long periods, "otherwise they are going to get bored". At the end of 2014 Li Yi, his wife, and a cousin went on a 10-day road trip in the South Island of New Zealand. Farr Yacht Design has released the first 3D renderings of the new Super 12 yachts that will be sailed in the San Francisco Yacht Racing Challenge beginning in July 2017 on San Francisco Bay. Britton Ward, the lead designer of the Super 12s, said the renderings are a big step in the process leading to the final design. Ward said Tuesday that the entire staff in Annapolis, Maryland, is working on the project so tooling production can begin in May. The Super 12s are a modernized, one-design version of the venerable 12 Meters that were used in the America's Cup from 1958-1987. The San Francisco Yacht Racing Challenge, also known as the Super 12 Cup, was founded by former America's Cup executive Tom Ehman. Newly qualified yacht engineers can expect $19 to $20 an hour in South Florida and there just aren't enough of them. Launched seven years ago in a hangar-like building near Florida's Turnpike in Miramar, Broward College's marine program aims to prepare students to handle mechanical and electrical needs on yachts a€” everything from engines to air conditioning systems, electric generators to desalinization units. The Marine Industries Association of South Florida pushed for the program, and Broward College increasingly collaborates with association members and other businesses to place students in jobs. In all, the marine industry a€” including yachts and other craft and businesses from manufacturing to sales and service a€” supports more than 136,000 jobs in South Florida, mainly in Broward. Yacht technicians are just a tiny fraction of that total, which also includes carpenters, captains, salespeople and others.
Indeed, demand for yacht technicians is so strong that the Broward College program, with 55 students enrolled, is nearing capacity in Miramar. Two years after a putsch against the Irish Sailing Association (ISA) a new five-year strategic plan has put the association on a new tack, reports The Irish Times. If nothing else the blueprint serves as written confirmation the ISA no longer sees itself purely in a a€?national governing bodya€? role but in the same boat as the clubs and classes it was set up to serve.
The plan is based on the views that were put to a a€?Strategic Review Groupa€? in 2013 that assessed how the association needed to adjust to better serve the sport. Its author Neil Murphy, a former ISA president, says the underlying principle is moving from a a€?governance approacha€? to one of the principal stakeholders in the sport a€?working together with a goal of encouraging and developing participationa€?.
Ita€™s still just a plan on paper a€“ not yet on water a€“ and for this master plan to work it must first get the buy-in of a 17,000-plus strong sailing community, spread across a network of clubs on lakes, rivers and around the coast.
Ita€™s a major step forward on previous strategic plans but Murphy warns a€?it can only work if there is a joint commitment between the clubs and the associationa€?. Irish sailing publication afloat.ie reports, a€?This blueprint looks like a positive step forward not least because it makes an attempt to implement measurable targets for the good of grassa€“roots sailors.

Serene Social has teamed up with Lululemon and Suja for this gathering to kick off the calamity of fashion energy that's about to overtake the city.

May 29 will mark the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, which claims to be the largest single-day sporting event in the world. An onsite museum displays cars, from vintage to contemporary, along with photos, memorabilia and exhibits about the event's rich history and its champions. You'll learn about traditions like winners drinking a bottle of milk and "kissing the bricks" at the finish line. The original gravel-and-tar surface was soon repaved with 3.2 million bricks, which led to the nickname "Yard of Bricks". It shut down for several years due to World War II and was reopened by Tony Hulman, who thought the race would help promote his family's business, the Clabber Girl baking powder company. Puces Saint-Ouen is home to what is said to be the world's largest flea market, which has more than 2,500 stalls covering 7 hectares. However, that pot seems to have two distinct halves, those from the East who sell cheap clothes and handicrafts, their French counterparts, most of whose stalls are located together, selling mainly vintage fashion goods, old books and pictures, and antique furniture. We went into one of the bigger shops, called Espace Kiliwatch, which was packed to the rafters with well-dressed and obviously well-to-do customers, and in an atmosphere of festive chaos people of all ages, male and female, queued in front of its fitting rooms waiting to try on its stylish clothes.

That pair of boots I had proudly bought so cheaply only a matter of days before were falling apart and my friends felt uncomfortable being seen with such uncool, unParisian company.
Historians say that it was the immigrants from France at the beginning of the 20th century who had planted these trees all over the former French Concession in an attempt to fight homesickness. Some say that it was also the charm afforded by these French planes that led Shanghai to being dubbed as "the Paris of the East". Xinhua Road, where trees are more than half a century old, is one of the most storied places in Shanghai. Huang Minghua, an 85-year-old who has lived on this road since the 1960s, said that only people who were politically reviewed could apply for a resident permit to stay on Xinhua Road in the past. Primary school students would form the first row on both sides of the road while performers from art troupes and People's Liberation Army soldiers formed the second.

Life in this part of the Shanghai seems to slow down a few notches, and the idyllic scenes along the street almost feels like an antidote to the bustle of city life. British people had cultivated hybrids of the species in medieval times and they were then called "London Planes". After making its way to Shanghai, the French plane was later introduced to other Chinese cities such as Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan and Qingdao. In 2011, the relocation of some 150 plane trees on Maoming and Shimen roads to facilitate the construction of downtown metro lines was faced with numerous complaints from residents. In summer, the leaves create a vibrant green canopy for people to seek respite from the scorching heat. It is a joy to watch the leaves gracefully spiral in the wind before they finally land on the ground to imbue the landscape with mesmerizing hues of red and yellow. Because of this colorful spectacle created by the autumn leaves of the plane trees, city authorities have since last year decided to keep the leaves on streets with light traffic instead of having them swept away.
Erik Nilsson experiences this - literally - when he can't find his way out of a building's entire floor that houses the world's longest Tibetan thangka on every wall. It had to be mounted across numerous walls that jut in different directions to produce enough surface area to fit in the building's second floor, carving several rooms out of a more than 70,000-square-meter area. We entered the room he'd pointed toward to arrive in what turned out to be another sequence of chambers.
