I read very useful information on your website regarding the importance of nutrition for health, therefore I have a few questions and hope you will find time to provide the answers. But, I also read on Internet (Primagirl Blog, more precisely), that The Paleo Diet can heal this disease, because it is always certain types of food that triggers it.
Abundant scientific evidence exists in Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) patients showing that pro-inflammatory cytokines (local hormones) are elevated in the blood are almost certainly involved in the skin lesions presenting in HS patients. For Autoimmune patients including those with HS, I suggest restricting the following foods for a 30 day period to determine if symptoms improve.
There are no guarantees that these food restrictions will improve symptoms or cure autoimmune diseases. Nevertheless, I know of hundreds of anecdotal cases worldwide which demonstrate contemporary Paleo diets to be therapeutic in autoimmune patients. Being a chef- all these food restrictions were hard at first, but now my skin is better than ever and I’m eating healthy foods. Rachel, I have seen quite a dramatic improvement in my HS symptoms by following the Paleo diet. I’m now planning to follow the autoimmune protocol, and feel very hopeful that these additional measures will help me to get my HS into remission completely!! Put Paleo into action with The Paleo Diet Cookbook and eat your way to weight loss, increased energy, and lifelong health-while enjoying delicious meals. Many athletes worldwide, including those in the CrossFit community have adopted the Paleo Diet because they have observed that it helps them to increase muscle mass, reduce body fat and train at greater intensities.
First, the diet is high in animal protein, which is the richest source of the branched-chain amino acids–valine, leucine, and isoleucine. In addition to stimulating muscle growth via BCAA, the Paleo Diet simultaneously prevents muscle protein breakdown because it produces a net metabolic alkalosis.
One of the most important goals of any athletic diet is to maintain high muscle stores of glycogen, a body fuel absolutely essential for high-level performance.
It is a little known fact, but, similar to the situation with branched-chain amino acids, glycogen synthesis by muscles occurs most effectively in the immediate post-exercise window.
The material on this web site is provided for educational purposes only and is not to be used for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Furthermore, one study even showed a 71% increased risk of cardiovascular mortality in younger diabetic patients, and a threefold increased risk of hypoglycemia.4 While trick-or-treating one day out of the year will not be the end-all, it’s not without risks. The Paleo Diet is the optimal “diabetes diet” in type 2 diabetic patients.5 If that doesn’t say a lot, I don’t know what does! I also found your name and information on your book there, therefore I decided to contact you. Two major categories of circulating white blood cells (macrophages and dendritic cells) likely have become activated (sensitized) in the gut to specific gut proteins (either bacteria or food or both) and these gut borne cells then initiate an immune response which affects cells lining either the hair follicle or apocrine sweat glands in other parts of the body, particularly the groin and armpit areas.
These food restrictions form the basis for the contemporary Paleo Diet, however for autoimmune patients a few more restrictions should be included.
Psuedo grains (quinoa, amaranth) contain saponins which increase intestinal permeability in a dose dependent manner – meaning the more you consume the leakier the gut becomes. A foaming agent called Quillaja found in many brands of root beer increases intestinal permeability and potently stimulates the immune system. In addition to peanuts, which are not a not at all, but a legume, tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts, etc.) are one of the most common allergenic foods.
Together with my graduate students we are currently writing up a large case study involving nearly 100 autoimmune patients who have reported varying degrees of success in managing their conditions following The Paleo Diet.

Loren Cordain is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. I am definetly going to give it a shot, just wondering if anyone has had success with this and their HS.
I stopped eating most sugar and it improved.I started the YMCA Diabetes Prevention class and they said watch out for fat and exercise more. Loren Cordain’s The Real Paleo Diet Cookbook with 250 Paleo recipes prove following The Paleo Diet is as delicious and inspiring as it is healthy.
Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) are different from other amino acids that collectively make up protein in that they are potent stimulants for building and repairing muscle. A 1,000-calorie serving of lean beef provides 33.7 grams of BCAA, whereas the same serving of whole grains supplies a paltry 6 grams.
The refined grains, oils, sugars, and processed foods that represent the typical staples for most athletes are nearly devoid of these trace nutrients. Dietary starches and sugars are the body’s number one source for making muscle glycogen. Muscles can build all the glycogen they need when they get starch and sugar in the narrow time frame following exercise. The only thing that helped him about 10 years ago was his trip to Malaysia that resulted in total change of food (no bread, no meat – except fish, no diary, but a lot of turmeric).
Hence, it seems likely that HS, although it presents clinically as a single disease, is actually at least two diseases, one in the hair follicle and one in the apocrine sweat glands, both likely to be autoimmune in nature. Wheat is probably the grain which should be avoided strictly because of its combination of antinutrients (wheat germ agglutinin, gliadin, thaumatin like proteins, and phytic acid) which have varying degrees of toxicity in humans. The rationale for this food group restriction can be found in my new book, The Paleo Answer, in a single chapter I have written with hundreds of scientific references to support these conclusions. Again, I have extensively documented the rationale for these restrictions inВ The Paleo Answer. The rationale for these restrictions can be found in all of my popular books and in my scientific writings which are available across the website. The nightshade family of plants contain a variety of compounds which increase intestinal permeability. To date, tree nuts have been poorly studied for antinutrient content, and it is unclear if they increase intestinal permeability or adversely affect the immune system. His research emphasis over the past 20 years has focused upon the evolutionary and anthropological basis for diet, health and well being in modern humans.
In a nutshell, there are four basic reasons why the Paleo Diet enhances athletic performance or is ergogenic. This information is relatively new and has been reported in the scientific literature in the past decade or so.
Because many endurance athletes focus on starches (breads, cereals, pasta, rice, and potatoes) and sugars at the expense of meats, particularly following a hard workout, they get precious little muscle-building BCAA in their diets.
The typical American diet is net acid producing because of its high reliance upon acid-yielding grains, cheeses, and salty processed foods at the expense of base-producing fruits and veggies. From examining the training logs of numerous people he has coached, my colleague and co-author, Joe Friel (an internationally known triathlete coach), has found that the frequency and duration of colds, flu, and upper respiratory illnesses are reduced when athletes adopt the Paleo Diet. Eating carbs all day long is overkill and actually serves to displace the muscle-building animal proteins and alkalinity-enhancing, nutrient-dense fruits and veggies that are needed to promote muscle growth and boost the immune system. Choose dark chocolate over pure sugar confections, which have a healthy dose of dietary fat to attenuate the spike in blood glucose.

A Palaeolithic diet improves glucose tolerance more than a Mediterranean-like diet in individuals with ischaemic heart disease. But the caveat is this: These amino acids work best when consumed in the post exercise window. By consuming high amounts of animal protein (and hence BCAA) along with sufficient carbohydrate, athletes can rapidly reverse the natural breakdown of muscle that occurs following a workout and thereby reduce recovery time and train at a greater intensity at the next session. The athlete’s body is even more prone to blood acidosis due to the by-products of exercise. A healthy athlete, free of colds and illness, can train more consistently and intensely and thereby improve performance. Many Paleo friendly fruits and veggies are effective in restoring muscle glycogen, particularly net-alkaline-producing starches found in bananas, sweet potatoes, and yams. Pop two or three of these and, you’re looking at potentially 2-6 more units of insulin injections to maintain blood glucose control, let alone the risks of inducing hypoglycemia. His postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Diego, centered on obesity, inflammation, and insulin resistance. The scientific references showing how nightshade compounds increase intestinal permeability can be found in my new book, The Paleo Answer. Cordain’s scientific publications have examined the nutritional characteristics of worldwide hunter-gatherer diets as well as the nutrient composition of wild plant and animal foods consumed by foraging humans. Athletes worldwide who have adopted the Paleo Diet typically report of improved recovery with these dietary recommendations.
Regrettably, they took this concept to extremes; high-starch, cereal-based, carbohydrate-rich diets were followed with near-fanatical zeal 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. One comprehensive review showed that this may induce up to a two-fold increased risk for severe hypoglycemia.2 It has long been known that the best strategy for diabetics is carbohydrate restriction, especially restricting sugar intake, not increasing the insulin to counteract large sugar boluses.
Nevertheless, work from our group as far back as 2002 and from Alessio Fasano’s group at the University of Maryland suggest that a key triggering event in most autoimmune diseases is a leaky gut. In HS patients, smoking tobacco (a nightshade plant) has been shown to aggravate the disease symptoms in HS patients. He is the world’s leading expert on Paleolithic diets and has lectured extensively on the Paleolithic nutrition worldwide. Because the Paleo Diet is rich in fruits and veggies, it reverses the metabolic acidosis produced from the typical grain-and starch-laden diet that many athletes consume, thereby preventing muscle loss. William Lagakos has authored numerous manuscripts which have been published in peer-reviewed journals, as well as a non-fiction book titled The Poor, Misunderstood Calorie which explores the concept of calories and simultaneously explains how hormones and the neuroendocrine response to foods regulate nutrient partitioning. Acute glycemic and blood lipid response to the ingestion of a candy bar-like protein supplement compared with its candy bar counterpart.
Beneficial effects of a Paleolithic diet on cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes: a randomized cross-over pilot study. Cordain is the author of six popular bestselling books including The Real Paleo Diet Cookbook, The Paleo Diet, The Paleo Answer, and The Paleo Diet Cookbook, summarizing his research findings.
