Chris Kresser is a neighbor and my favorite savant when it comes to ancestral health and how it informs functional medicine. Q: Chris, you’re trained as an acupuncturist but you’re also one of the best functional medicine clinicians I know. A: One reason why it’s tricky is that dysfunction in the gut doesn’t always lead to gut symptoms. A: Grey-area foods are foods that have only recently (on the evolutionary timescale) been introduced to the human diet, but that modern research suggests may be healthy when well-tolerated by the individual. A: I’m fascinated by the field of epigenetics, which is the study of how environmental factors like diet, lifestyle, and exposure to toxins directly affect the expression our genes. Author Chris Kresser is an Integrative and Functional Medicine Practitioner with a practice in Berkeley, CA.

This will depend upon the person, of course, but in general a Paleo diet is a great place to start.

In a perfect world we wouldn’t need these, but due to the damage many of us have done to our guts over time, probiotics and prebiotics are often necessary. And we’re learning that these effects are much more far-reaching than we had previously assumed. It was refreshing to read a logical explanation of what it means for a food to be nutrient dense, and I was glad to see that diet was not the only focus, but that exercise, gut bacteria, stress management, healthy sleep, correct sun exposure and social connections were also addressed as being equally important factors in a healthy life.
In addition to Chris’ personal story we read about a woman with diabetes and high blood pressure, a young man crippled by Crohn’s disease, an elderly woman with mobility issues and brain fog, a 20-something woman with thyroid disease, a woman unable to get pregnant, a middle-aged man with constipation, another who was struggling with depression, a corporate VP with chronic skin issues – all of these people and many more were able to find healing using the protocols outlined within the pages of this book.
Instead of going with the flow, he looks at the evidence provided in quality research, and applies a good measure of critical thinking skills. This is the most strict portion of the diet, and yet after more than a week following this with myself and my husband, I have yet to feel deprived or hungry, instead I’m feeling pretty good! Find out why thyroid problems are so often mis-diagnosed, what really causes them, and how to heal them naturally. Find out what really causes skin problems, and how simple dietary changes can restore the clear, beautiful skin you desire.
In this eBook, you’ll learn the three biggest obstacles to Paleo success, and how to overcome them. While there’s no question Paleo is a great starting place, the key to making it successful over the long term is personalizing it to meet your unique needs and goals. On my journey back to health it became clear to me that addressing the underlying causes of disease, rather than just suppressing symptoms, is the key to recovering and optimizing health. If you tolerate them well, I believe that eating them in moderation within the context of a diet based on nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods is fine for most people.
Nightshade plants like eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes may also need to be removed, as they cause problems for some people. Prescript Assist is my favorite probiotic, and there are many good choices for prebiotics, including resistant starch (e.g. For example, recent research suggests that obese men’s sperm contains a “molecular signal” that can pass on obesity and metabolic problems to their children and even grandchildren! The other side of this, of course, is that if we take responsibility for our own health by making good choices, we can pass that legacy down to our children and grandchildren as well. This book was originally published in hardback under the title Personal Paleo Code in December 2013. In many ways he is right, because this book does not advocate the One Single Way to be healthy, and as you work your way through the chapters you are repeatedly encouraged to trust yourself, listen to your body, and go at your own pace.

In addition to the extra menus the online bonus materials include entire chapters addressing specific health topics such as leaky gut or adrenal fatigue. Find out what the latest research says in this eBook, and learn how to prevent and treat heart disease naturally. Unfortunately, the conventional medical system is focused on disease management— suppressing symptoms with drugs and surgery rather than getting to the root cause of the problem. Do not use the information on this web site for diagnosing or treating a health problem or disease, or prescribing medication or other treatment. More online bonus material includes a guide to supplements, links to sources for healthy meats, snacks, and Paleo-friendly doctors. I chose to study Chinese and integrative medicine in school because I believed it would better prepare me to do the kind of work I wanted to do with patients. There is also a forum section where you can start up a conversation with others also working through the diet.
After reading this eBook, you’ll be able to understand the many factors that play into how a person handles a low carbohydrate diet, and whether or not their health will improve on such a plan. I work with children as well as adults, and it’s not uncommon to see kids with severe behavioral issues (ADHD, autism spectrum disorders) that improve significantly or even disappear entirely after removing gluten from their diets.
