I too have tried the AIP with little success so far and am having trouble keeping weight on. Hi Melanie, You sound just like me (Yay) sorry to sound so happy but I was begining to think I was the only one out there that was having the same issues as you!! I don’t know if you attended the Gluten Summit recently online but the world researchers that spoke (all 30+ of then) discussed not only celiac but non-celiac gluten sensitivity.
You might look into the idea of reintroducing foods before you continue to recommend that as an option.

When I first started, there was almost no information out there about why’s behind Paleo Approach eliminations and even a lot of conflicting information on exactly what to eliminate. The book is an incredible gift to the community, but came with a sacrifice: the work it entailed caused your autoimmune disease to flare. I thought her facebook page had all the information, but after this great review I see I need to go further and research even more. I know it has been hard to be patient waiting for the book to arrive after all of the delays, but after seeing it myself (especially having just gone through this process with my own book) I completely understand why it took so much longer than anticipated. Basically, for anyone with an autoimmune disease, this is the most incredible gift from heaven you could ever wish for.В It is the most thoroughly researched, detailed and comprehensive roadmap for recovery. While I started with an elimination diet, my journey ended up addressing all of these other pieces of the puzzle that didn’t really fit into a simple diet change. The first half of the book is called “The Cause”, and its chapters detail what autoimmune disease is, how the immune system works (complete with amazing diagrams), what causes autoimmunity, how diet and lifestyle factors contribute to our conditions, and what to do with all of this information.
The immune system is incredibly complex to understand, and Sarah’s illustrations made so many of the concepts of leaky gut and the immune system more understandable. I found the chapter reviews helpful for synthesizing the most important information in a section.
This is an awesome tool for anyone who has tried the approach and needs some ideas of areas to consider because they aren’t making progress. By a lot, I mean over 400 pages, literally crammed full of the most thoroughly researched, pertinent information you could hope for. I am living a healthy and happy life today, because of these principles—they saved my life.

I’ve been on the autoimmune paleo diet for about a year and a half now, but I still struggle tremendously with digestive, and skin related problems.
I stayed on the AIP for a year, absolutely strictly until I was able to tolerate eggs, but only occasionally.

Some go into remission from their AI and do very well eating Paleo–adding eggs, nuts, seeds, and dairy back into their diets. It’s full of colorful graphs, photos, illustrations and textboxes that summarize and accentuate the information contained in the text. Interspersed throughout the scientific text are personal testimonials of real people, like you and me and the author herself, who have all used the Paleo Approach to heal.
If I was given one editing wish, I would add a 1-page quick summary of the protocol at the start of the book. Through the Paleo Approach, Sarah put her autoimmune disease into remission and also healed a myriad of health conditions: IBS, acid reflux, migraines, anxiety, asthma and allergies. There was also no information whatsoever on what superfoods to eat more of and zero information on the importance of lifestyle factors. I do okay with small and occasional amounts most nuts, seeds, egg white, and coffee, but definitely reserve these for very occasional treats and only when my stress is well managed and I’m getting enough sleep. My sister is gluten intolerant and has recently started the Paleo diet after I found your site and told her about it. I have many of the same conditions that have been improving steadily as I’ve been following the AIP.
I ordered the book using a gift card from Barnes and Noble, unfortunately they don’t know when they will be getting the book so they have cancelled my order. Things like learning how to prioritize sleep, managing my stress, getting the right amount of physical activity, sunlight exposure, circadian rhythms, and doing further testing and treatment for deeper issues (gut pathogens, parasites, fat malabsorption, and the MTHFR mutation) and finally finding meditation and doing work on an emotional level. The second half is called “The Cure”, and it contains the details of Sarah’s plan—which foods to include, lifestyle habits that promote healing, how to transition, troubleshooting the protocol, and reintroductions. Sarah tackles some pretty deep scientific concepts with her signature approachable, and fun writing style. She is a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner by the Nutritional Therapy Association, and is the author of The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook, a guide and recipe book for the autoimmune protocol, and AIP Batch Cook, a video-based batch cooking program. Some people do not feel like they have enough energy on a low-starch diet like you are describing.
While I know that it is very common to have many cross-reactive foods, I would say that the concept of healing the gut is extremely new and hasn’t been studied. I was quite surprised, as I thought it would take longer, and I got a pretty violent reaction when I first reintroduced them.
The reader should always consult his or her healthcare provider to determine the appropriateness of the information for their own situation or if they have any questions regarding a medical condition or treatment plan.
I asked her to clarify, and she said, “This is an acknowledgement to the fact that we are all human and there are times when a special treat can make all the difference in the world in terms of sustainability. It took almost a year from when I had the Paleo Approach nailed down to when I could consume these foods without problems.
I also opted to delay the release of The Paleo Approach Cookbook so that I could slow my pace a little to look after myself better. This has the snowball effect of increasing my stress and decreasing the amount of time I can commit to stress-relieving activities and sleep. I’ve been trying different approaches for years without success to solve my health issues, including autoimmune issues like eczema. My father struggles with many of the same health issues along with many more and I would like to give him a copy of the Paleo Approach.
The publisher has already started the second print run, so it should be restocked in 2-4 weeks.
I’m not going to spend a lot of time summarizing the information here—but just know that Sarah has gone into an incredible amount of detail to talk about just about any question or topic you could have. I would be surprised if anyone could find a food that isn’t included on either of these lists!
I think it is absolutely necessary for those of us with autoimmunity to understand these concepts in-depth, so that we can have a better understanding of how our bodies interact with the environment as well as so that we can advocate for ourselves best in the doctor’s office.
I do not include fruit, heavy starchy vegetables, fermented foods or drinks, histamine rich foods, a few foods from the cabbage family, even coconut or raw salads!

These researchers may think that we are unable to heal from food sensitivities, but I know many with autoimmune disease who have the personal experience that show the contrary. I have since been on antibiotic regimen to eradicate the bad gut bacteria in small intestine. Every chapter ends with a review page that highlights the most important points covered in that chapter.
Or if you need a bridge between regular paleo and strict AIP, these are the foods she feels are safest to continue eating during that transition: fresh legumes (green beans and peas), fruitbased spices, seedbased spices, seed and nut oils, ghee from grass fed dairy, and egg yolks.
She doesn’t necessarily recommend people with autoimmune disease reintroduce these foods at all.
Those factors are essential in healing, but they’re also excellent tools to take care of yourself as you do the protocol itself. I am working diligently to be well but it takes a book like this to help you make the adjustments necessary as new things crop up! Many choices in my life are not under my control because of my circumstances, so trying to afford the AIP protocol, get on the AIP protocol and stay on it has been difficult. What has been super interesting, is that I have accidentally had dairy a few times in the last few months, with no reaction. There’s an index, a glossary, and detailed food guides, including vitamin, mineral and amino acid profiles of hundreds of different whole foods.
The number one factor in determining how much can be used is maintaining blood sugar regulation, which will depend on other foods being consumed and the individual’s sensitivity.
They’re listed as one of the last reintroductions accordingly, and should only be tried if all other reintroductions have succeeded and your autoimmune disease has been in remission for a long time.
Your symptoms need to improve enough that you no longer need the medication, before discontinuing, and that kind of healing takes time.
From the time I decided I needed to modify a paleo diet for my autoimmune disease to when I really understood exactly what the Paleo Approach meant was about 10 months (although, I figured out the elimination piece at about the 4 month mark and did see improvement then).
I think Sarah’s book would be a great support in getting on the right track and helping others in my life understand what I need to do for myself and why. This book was designed to be a reference book you can use daily to find the answers you need. It wasn’t so much about falling off and getting back on the wagon, so much as discovering what exactly the wagon was in the first place! It took me eight years and her coming to the end of her rope before she was open enough to try again. I don’t know how else to help my body heal and was wondering if you or anyone else in the paleo community have any suggestions.
I must also emphasize that changing your medication is not, in most cases, something to tackle when you initially adopt the Paleo Approach.
