The views expressed in the contents above are those of our users and do not necessarily reflect the views of MailOnline. For the World Food Day to be held on 16 October, the Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition presents the results of the studies of the environmental impacts of three typical menus.
The food and environment double pyramid, a model developed by the BCFN, intuitively shows the impact of each food not only in nutritional terms but also on an environmental level, considering the life cycle, the methods used to process the food before it reaches our tables and the cooking requirements prior to consumption, in terms of consumption of energy and resources. The protein in it ‘contributes to a growth in muscle mass’, while the pantothenic acid found in lentils can help reduce tiredness and ‘improve mental performance’.

Its many ingredients include micro nutrients such as biotin, calcium, zinc, chromium copper, iron, potassium, selenium, and magnesium.Biotin, for example, can help the metabolism, the nervous system, skin and hair, while calcium is good for muscle function and the bones. Because this year the World Day accent is on “Sustainable food systems for food safety and nutrition”, aiming to raise public awareness on the impact of diets on the environment, to demonstrate how malnutrition can also be tackled starting from more aware eating habits.
The double pyramid shows that the healthiest foods in nutritional terms are also those with lower environmental impact, as they have a lower ecological footprint[1]. Joining the Advisory Board in 2013 are Riccardo Valentini, 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winner and Director of the Climate Impacts Division of the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change, and Danielle Nierenberg, expert in sustainable agriculture and co-founder of FoodTank: the Food Think Tank.
