Body-conscious celebrities and their diet gurus are saying good-bye to gluten, dairy, and sugar. Benefits: Those with celiac or pronounced gluten sensitivity will see the most improvement.
Just ask the millions of people who’ve seen their acne vanish as one of the many dairy-free benefits, and they will tell you that pizza face isn’t a myth. Whether backed by research or thousands of personal success stories, many people are squashing daily headaches, migraines, rashes, stuffy sinuses, chronic infections, arthritis pain, and even narcolepsy when they cut out all dairy foods.
For those who are milk allergic and have had issues with low body weight, a milk-free diet can actually help them to absorb nutrients and potentially gain healthy weight.
Numerous research studies have shown a direct correlation between dairy intake and several hormone-related cancers. Antibiotics are given in mass quantities to dairy cows to help prevent infection, but great concern has been raised over the consumption of these antibiotics through the milk supply and antibiotic resistance. This post on dairy-free benefits was inspired by the So Delicious 21-Day Dairy-Free Challenge! I do believe I need to go dairy free as well, after having numerous occurrences recently where I have had bad reactions to ice cream and yogurt.
In our March issue, we espoused the health and weight-loss benefits of going against the golden mean when it comes to dieting and found that eliminating certain ingredients altogether may be the secret to staying slim. It was a rough month, with our intrepid dieters struggling to stick to their guns while non-participants took turns playing both cheerleader and tormentor (fresh-baked cookies were quite literally dangled in front of one poor dieter's face).
For almost two weeks, I bet safe and subsisted only on chicken and greens, but after a gagging fit, I decided to finally read the primer our health editors gave us on safe foods for even the most rigorous of elimination diets. Changes I'll make to my regular diet: I'm going to keep my sugar intake as low as I can manage. How I prepared: Much like quitting smoking, I had psyched myself out so much in advance that I didn't even crave dairy during my last supper. The most surprising part: Cutting dairy was supposed to improve my complexion and help facilitate weight loss. Changes I'll make to my regular diet: My long tango with Papa John's isn't quite over, (I'm one pizza away from a free extra-large!), but I'm definitely cutting back there.
The most surprising part: My body really didn't miss dairy, and I felt a million times better—even my skin cleared up! I admit it, I slipped up: Keeping to the diet on the weekends and special occasions was much harder. Changes I'll make to my regular diet: I think I can commit to a gluten-free week once a month. Then three years ago she switched to a diet that's gluten- and dairy-free, to match her son Evan's diet. Her diet sounds alright- I agree that the magazine probably left out specifics, which doesn't help the rest of us! JJones - I agree that it sounds like she is eating very little, however I think magazines have a tendancy to gloss over the specifics of what a diet usually entails and leaves things out (which is terrible because people read it and think that all they have to do is purree fish and vegetables -which sounds terrible btw- and they will be skinny too). But there are many different reasons to explore the benefits of a dairy-free diet, which is why So Delicious is heading into their second year of theВ 21-Day Dairy-Free Challenge.
And yes, there will be recipes, advice, prizes(!!)В … and hopefully some dairy-free benefits that propel you toward your health goals! Through years of extensive research, and in my interactions with thousands of people, these are the top reasons for their choice to Go Dairy Free.
I’ve received hundreds of emails from readers professing that a dairy-free diet banished their acne.
Still others are finding a notable reduction in behavioral issues with conditions such as ADHD and Autism when they eliminate dairy, and sometimes gluten (though believe it or not, a large report found that dairy-free has a bigger impact!). But for the rest of the population, weight loss is a real possibility with the dairy-free transition. Also, back on the topic of cancers, there are two primary sources of hormones in our milk supply: BGH (Bovine Growth Hormone), a natural occurring hormone in cows that stimulates the production IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1), and a synthetic version, rBGH, used in conventional dairy farming to help stimulate milk production, which further increases the levels of IGF-1. We share dairy-free recipes, product reviews, news, recommendations and health guides to aide those with milk allergies, lactose intolerance or a general need or desire to live without dairy. Here at Details, we practice what we preach, so we took it one step further and asked our staffers to nix either gluten, soy, sugar, eggs, dairy, or corn for a full month. Banishing sugar actually resulted in greater and more consistent energy in the long run (after a serious blood-sugar crash on Day 6), clearer skin, and a more balanced (and surprisingly satisfying) diet. Luckily, I have friends who are much more outspoken (and weirdly invested in my diet), so they were good enough to check for me a lot of times. The number of food products that have replaced dairy with oils and other chemicals is pretty astounding. I've had horrible acne for years and have read about giving up dairy, but my skin cleared up more than it has in months. Pediatricians often recommend that breastfeeding moms of milk-allergic babies go completely dairy free themselves. One very large study showed that women who consumed just 1 or more servings of skim or low-fat milk daily had a 32% higher risk of developing any ovarian cancer and a 69% higher risk of serous ovarian cancer when compared to women who consumed 3 or less servings per month. Believe it or not, there is a large body of science that directly combats the promoted connection between dairy milk and bone health. We have an entire substitute section, recipes, and reviews with many cheese alternative options as well as in my book, Go Dairy Free.

Three people signed up to quit sugar, two people eschewed dairy, and one brave lady went gluten-free.
I was able to make boxed Betty Crocker brownies with canned buttercream icing, and there was not an ounce of dairy to be had.
I've been finding it much easier to turn dairy down now, and I'm more aware of how I'll feel if I do eat it.
After weaning, humans no longer “need” the ability to digest their mother’s milk, so they naturally begin losing lactase, the enzyme that helps to digest lactose in dairy milk.
Another cohort study showed that men with the highest dietary intake of dairy foods were 2.2 times more likely to develop prostate cancer than men with the lowest intake of dairy foods. According to the landmark Harvard study of approximately 78,000 female nurses, women who consumed greater amounts of calcium from dairy foods had a significantly increased risk of hip fractures, while no increase in fracture risk was observed for the same levels of calcium intake from non-dairy sources.
We also offer ample resources for gluten-free, soy-free, food allergy, vegan and paleo diets.
FPIES (Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome) and EoE (Eosinophilic Esophagitis) are two types of allergic conditions (commonly linked to dairy) that affect the gastrointestinal tract specifically and can have a delayed reaction, making them difficult to diagnose.
Interestingly enough, many moms opt to remain milk-free even after breastfeeding, due to the dairy-free benefits they end up enjoying themselves! To further these findings, study and population reviews have shown that the countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are also the largest consumers of dairy products. Fortunately, dairy-free milk alternatives do not contain added antibiotics or hormones since they are plant-based! Whatever the reason, an increasing number of dermatologists are now recommending the dairy-free diet as a first step in treating acne. Dairy has also been labeled as a key trigger in IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and various other digestive conditions, from the EoE and FPIES mentioned above to chronic constipation. Intended for people with legitimate health concerns, gluten-, dairy-, and sugar-free diets have gone mainstream, promising to improve the complexion, brighten the mood, increase alertness, detox the body, and last but certainly not least, help you shed pounds.
Though “traditional” dairy allergy has a higher prevalence in infants and young children, EoE is being diagnosed in an increasing number of adults. Since no reliable sensitivity test is yet available, the only way to determine whether your malaise is gluten-related is to try the diet and see if you feel better—which should be apparent within a few days. Btw…this was the first time I have seen EOE mentioned in regards to food allergies, not one Dr prior to the ENT encouraged me to nix dairy!
