The best way to spruce up your Paleo menu and learn which foods are in season is to shop at local farmer’s markets, where the food is fresh, comes from nearby farms, and creates good safety net to ensure a higher-than-average quality diet. In springtime, hunter-gatherers in Israel hunted species that were overly lean and otherwise fat-depleted, they supplemented the fat content of their diets with acorns and nuts.1 While the animal meat to which we have access in modern times isn’t subject to large variations in fat content, we can still benefit from the nutrient-density and healthy fats in nuts.
For many months out of the year, during the wet season, hunting wasn’t productive for the Hadza, so much of their caloric requirements were met by honey.2 Obtaining the honey was no easy feat, often an energy-intensive process, which in some respect justified its consumption.
Some aspects of seasonal dieting remain relevant today, despite the fact that our access to most foods is not seasonally-restricted, regardless of where you live.

I’ve been continuing my research on the hunter gatherer diet, aka the paleo diet or the primal diet, in order to see if I could find some more evidence for or against it. Despite all of the supposed health benefits associated with soy, the hunter gatherer diet doesn’t allow it (or grains, potatoes, or other beans).
For those that have been following my posts I’m sure you’ll see that this diet isn’t for me. As mentioned in my other article on The Paleo Solution, I think this sounds like it could be a good diet for health, but it’s too limiting for me to be able to stick to it long term. If you try the hunter gatherer diet, please share your experience with me and other readers, I’d love to hear your input.

You must have quite an enlightened doctor to consider dietary causes for health problems rather than just suggesting medication, lucky you. The importance of sampling and preserving microbial diversity from traditional groups in regions where the effects of globalization on diet and lifestyle are less profound will be important in determining if interventions may allow modulation of an individual’s so-called enterotype to improve health (and even of the concept of the core enterotypes hold up). I would like to use it inside the text as an example of hunting-gathering peoples that live in Namibia. As Paleo Dieters we aim to closely mimic the diet of our hunter-gatherer ancestors in contemporary society. Loren Cordain’s The Real Paleo Diet Cookbook with 250 Paleo recipes prove following The Paleo Diet is as delicious and inspiring as it is healthy.
I already follow a lot of the same guidelines as this diet just as part of my daily healthy eating plan but there are some things that I’m not prepared to give up. However, worldwide diversity of microbial repertoire’s in these traditional communities is fast disappearing and if we ever hope to understand what a “normal” and truly “healthy” microbiome might look like, we will need to work with these minimally contacted groups to create a bio bank of stool samples before its lost forever.
In summertime, when many delicious fruits are in-season, just remember that historically, this change in diet quality was frequently accompanied increased energy expenditure.
One study on the diets of older men in Hawaii found that eating tofu on a regular basis more than doubled their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and actually made their brains smaller! I am finding the research into all these diets quite enlightening though, and am finding interesting little gems here and there that I think I can incorporate into my own eating plan.

Working with 4-5 San villages, we will study the current impact of diet on the gut microbiome. Maybe I’m delusional, but I truly believe I can find a way to lose weight and get healthier without drastic measures or dieting.
The study will also include working with several of the San villages to revert 100% back to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle for 30, 60 and 120 day periods.
So the higher level of dietary carbohydrate at this time of year is matched with increased physical activity and higher levels of vitamin D.
Detailed diet and environmental conditions will be monitored, and a full suite of samples (feces, skin and oral swabs, etc) will be collected and prepared for analysis.
We will monitor the impact on the gut microbiome on seasonal changes in diet in a natural setting – something that has never been done. We will also have the opportunity to monitor high protein-fat diet from terrestrial versus aquatic resources and the role hygiene on the gut microbiome and innate and adaptive immune system.
