If our weight is within recommended healthy limits and we are in good health, then, in general, the dietary guidelines for people living with HIV are much the same as for everyone else, meaning a healthy, balanced diet as described above. Many of us, especially when we are younger, tend to prioritise body image over a healthy diet and strive for the “ideal” body shape that is pushed by the fashion industry and puts pressure on us to conform. Many of us with families spend a lot of time buying, preparing and cooking food for them – but we often look after the nutritional needs of our families and neglect our own nutritional health by either just “grazing” on their leftovers or snacking between meals.

These should form the basis of our diet, providing carbohydrates for energy as well as vitamins, minerals and fibre. It is important to try and maintain a healthy body weight and body mass index within the normal range. We can ask our healthcare provider to determine whether we are overweight and ask for a referral to a dietician for advice if this is the case.

A great nutritionist named Lynde Francis, who was also HIV positive, saw that she could improve the health of people with HIV in Zimbabwe dramatically by improving their food intake.
