Receiving a home-cooked meal during a rough stretch is such a simple yet significant form of love and encouragement. Freezer meal cooking involves planning meals ahead of time that can be easily frozen for later use.
There are so many advantages to freezer meal cooking, such as: 1 - Freezer meal cooking forces me to think ahead, shop intentionally and shop in bulk. My Freezer Club friends and I freeze meals in BPA-free Glad Ovenware containers for the most part. To find out how long foods last in the freezer and the best way to defrost frozen foods, use the USDA's suggestions and guidelines for Freezing and Food Safety here. Jamerrill from Free Homeschool Deals shows you how to makeВ 12 frugal freezer meals in one hour. If I had to pinpoint the number one money and time saver in my life, it would be freezer cooking.
The most important thing is to make sure your meals are completely sealed or properly wrapped, so they’ll keep in the freezer.
Hi Jenn, yes, my freezer pans come with a lid so there is no need for me to wrap them in foil. After being taken care of this way as a new mom and when two of my children were very ill, I knew I wanted to do the same for others during difficult seasons of life.
There are two main ways to do this: 1 - One option for freezer meal cooking is to use your "freezer smarts" and simply double a recipe you intend to cook and eat that day and then freeze one for later. They stack nicely in the freezer and the food pops out easily into an 8x8 casserole dish when ready to cook.

Now that you have an idea of how freezer meal cooking works, I'll share my Top 10 favorite freezer meals to take to others in my next post.
As you are caring for others with meals, we hope you find our blog full of tested recipes and thoughtful ideas to encourage you along the way. Freezer meals are the best things since sliced bread around here {which you can also freeze for the record}.
I say if they are ever going to benefit from eating one of those tasty freezer meals, they can roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty! I order most of my meat in bulk from Zaycon foods, so I end up with pound after pound of meat to process, cook and freeze. I stick mainly to freezer bags and foil pans {I buy mine at Costco, but I’ve heard some dollar stores sell them as well}. Check out the book Fix, Freeze, Feast: The Delicious, Money-Saving Way to Feed Your Family. I’ve been a household of one for many many years and started freezing my meals as a way to save money and to exercise portion control. Before we lose our garden (and our rosemary), I might do a whole batch of JUST honey rosemary chicken- I think my family would eat that one once every couple weeks. Other options include using freezer bags (best for soups, meat in marinades, or burgers), glass Pyrex 8x8 casserole dishes with lids, or disposable foil pans with lids. Rachel can frequently be found with her nose in a cook book or magazine, sneaking in a Food Network show while folding laundry, or destroying the kitchen while tweaking recipes to make them healthier for her family. Yes, it is a lot of work upfront, but that work pays you back each time you look at your bank account and each time you pull a freezer meal out and have a hot, home cooked meal in a fraction of the time. It’s awesome for when I fly off on an adventure and leave the rest of the fam home to fend for themselves. Because you’ll already be stuck in an apron for hours and the dishes will be piling up in your sink, make it count.
There are pretty pictures for all you visual readers {like me!}, so you can see what looks awesome to you before clicking through to the recipe. I’ll throw a bunch in the crockpot and season, chop and shred it in preparation for future meals.
2 - Having a plan provides accountability to cook homemade, nutritious meals for my family. Over the years, I've collected all of my favorite freezer meals in one post called 60+ Healthy Freezer Meals for Busy Moms.

Trust me when I say, once you fill your freezer with easy to prepare meals, there’s no going back.
I lean towards one-dish meals and casseroles, and I always think of how a dish will freeze before adding it to my list. So in addition to having already fully prepared meals, I’ll save myself tons of time by having the meat completely ready for other non-freezer meal recipes! That's why several of my friends and I have made freezer meal cooking a priority for seven years now.
So, for instance, if you're making lasagna, buy twice as many ingredients and put together two lasagnas at once. You also don't want to put hot foods directly in the freezer, as it will raise the temperature in your freezer. But in addition to all those main dish meals, you can go crazy and freeze desserts, smoothies and cinnamon rolls in a snap! We're able to feed our own families budget-friendly, healthy meals and still help others in need. Tightly wrap and freeze one lasagna before baking and then pop the other in the oven for dinner. 3 - Lastly, freezer meal cooking enables me and my Freezer Club friends to share healthy and delicious meals with families in need, since it's so easy to make one extra meal when already cooking for my own family.
The most important tip to remember when freezing food is that exposure to air makes food go bad in the freezer.
Over the years, our Freezer Club has collectively given many new moms, people in a crisis, and even a man recently released from prison some extra freezer meals to bake or warm up at their convenience. If you're not familiar with freezer meal cooking and the advantages, let me give you a little primer. 2 - Option two is that you can kick up freezer meal cooking a notch by swapping freezer meals with friends in a Freezer Club, which I share about in detail in a post called "How to Start a Freezer Club". One of the women in our group and her husband, delivered a few meals to this man and then even taught him how to make one of the recipes himself. I encourage you to read more about it, if you want to save time and money and consistently provide healthy meals for your family and others.
