Dietetics students learn the knowledge and skills required to qualify for a dietetic internship. The combination of these respective areas of concentration within a single department facilitates integrative studies between diet and physical activity in the maintenance of health and the prevention and treatment of selected chronic disease states, as well as studies on the quality and safety of food, and optimal human performance.


Florida State University’s doctoral program in Human Sciences, Nutrition and Food Science major, prepares students to pursue careers in a wide variety of health-related careers as well as academia.
Your academic map, or 4 year plan, recommends which classes to take each semester to ensure that you will graduate on time and fulfill proper pre-requisites before moving on to the next course. You may need to supply documentation and explanation of why this course must be taken outside of FSU with your transient or co-op form. Please refer to the FSU Undergraduate Bulletin or speak with an advisor to get a complete list of pre-requisite courses for your intended major.
Mapping is divided into terms: freshman fall, approximately 15 credit hours is term 1, freshman spring, approximately 30 credit hours is term 2, sophomore fall, and approximately 45 credit hours is term 3, etc. For example: if you transfer into FSU as a junior with 60 credit hours, then you will need to have completed all milestone courses through term 4 before being placed into your intended major. Targeted coursework allows students to learn the professional, technical, and interpersonal aspects of their career with an emphasis on the prevention of chronic diseases laying a foundation for experiential learning through internships and laboratory activities.
Our Dietetics degree is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Summers are not mapped and provide students a chance to catch up or get ahead in their plan of study.


Approximately 2000 undergraduate and graduate students each semester are served by our outstanding teaching and research faculty who help create a challenging academic environment. The Food and Nutrition major has a strong science base that prepares students for job opportunities in the food industry, government agencies, the medical field, as well as graduate study.
For example BSC2085 Anatomy and Physiology I is not the same as PET3322, Functional Anatomy and Physiology I. The Exercise Science program prepares students for graduate study in exercise physiology, medicine, dentistry and other health related fields, as well as for positions as personal trainers and health fitness instructors.
