In recent decades, artificially sweetened beverages have become an increasingly popular alternative to sugary sodas.
I have found myself more concerned about my diet soda consumption and seriously wondering about any health side effects.
Diet soda may seem like a far healthier alternative to regular pop, but a new study warns that this may not be the case at all. If you are thinking that diet soft drinks or artificial or even natural sweeteners are the answer for getting off sugar, think again. There has been a lot of discussion in the media about whether drinking diet soda causes weight gain. Furthermore there are other studies that actually link the consumption of diet soda with weight gain and obesity. Another study that links diet soda and weight gain was carried out by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, involved a cross-sectional snap shot of the dietary and health profiles of around 23,000 US citizens. One of the suggestions made by the researchers to explain the link between diet soda and weight gain was that when we drink diet soda, the brains ‘sugar reward’ pathway is still activated, so the person is left craving a sweet snack.


However, whatever lies behind the correlation between diet soda and weight gain, there is evidence that obesity levels and weight gain is higher amongst those that drink diet soda than those who do not.
The most recent research suggests that drinking diet soda is associated with marginal weight loss. However, the report by CNN makes the valid point that those who had been asked to give up diet soda had a harder task on their hands. This study was funded by the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and found that people who were overweight or obese drank more sugar-free drinks than people who were a healthy weight. Firstly, whilst the two studies by the University of Texas and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health indicate a correlation between diet soda and weight gain, the nature of the relationship is not fully understood and it is not possible to conclude that there is a simple causal relationship.
Two new studies presented recently at the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) Scientific Sessions have linked drinking diet soda to weight gain. Not only were they engaging in more exercise than they normally would and a weight loss diet, but they had also been asked to abstain from diet soda which they presumably enjoyed consuming. The study also found that of those people within the study who were overweight, those who drank diet soda drinks tended to eat more than overweight people who drank sugar-sweetened drinks.


From a purely anecdotal point of view, the high energy diet drinks that are full of caffeine can leave the drinkers nerves jangling. Put simply, it is harder to resist giving up other edible treats if you are also being asked to quit diet soda too. It was found that diet soda drinkers “experienced 70 percent greater increases in waist circumference compared with non-users.
Likewise, it may be that like rats, when humans consume diet soda, the link between sweetness and calorie intake is disrupted in the brain, leaving us with poor judgement.
A more equitable study would have been to have used a group of individuals who had either never drunk diet soda, or who had quit diet soda some time ago and were no longer missing it.В  The fact that the study was funded by the American Beverage Association may account for why these factors were not taken into consideration. It was found that those rats who were fed both sugar and artificial sweeteners ate more and gained weight.
