One of the longstanding criticisms of diet soda is that the artificial sweeteners screw with your brain and make you actually crave sweets more. No, those current diet soda drinkers who are told to go cold turkey didn’t lose as much weight as those people allowed to still drink diet sodas. You know, Diet Mountain Dew is one of the worst diet sodas out there as they continue to use BVO as a binder. I actually did a personal challenge about a year ago to see if it was what was keeping me from losing weight.

I really don’t think diet soda is that much worse then most of the processed stuff people eat now so I’m certainly going to keep indulging when the mood strikes! However, I do believe that I do get a small insulin response from the artificial sweeteners but I also thrive on a low carb diet, so my body may just be weird in that way. I try to drink a cup of water before I have any diet soda and buy one can at a time — instead of a 6-pack or case —  to have at home or at my office.
For three months both groups received the same coaching on weight loss techniques, and feedback on the meals they logged in their journals.

Research has shown that most people have a finite amount of willpower and trying to do two big things at once, losing weight and giving up a diet soda habit, could just be too hard for most people to do effectively. If you are currently drinking a lot of diet soda a day and you are trying to lose weight then it seems accurate to say you should cut back gradually and start replacing diet sodas with water or tea.

Overall, I hope that most people can see that despite what the news headlines may proclaim there is nothing about diet soda that will help you lose weight. But I can drink one can of Coke and then just have water for the rest of the day and I feel good. I didn’t like pouring those chemicals down my throat when the rest of my diet was (mostly) clean. Back when I drank diet stuff, I would drink diet stuff all day long and never drank just plain water. Perhaps those people who drink diet soda make less healthy eating choices then those people who don’t drink diet soda. I do lean towards the side of the debate that claims diet soda is the devil, and is in no way shape or form good for you or appropriate as a dietary aid.
