I have found myself more concerned about my diet soda consumption and seriously wondering about any health side effects. Diet soda may seem like a far healthier alternative to regular pop, but a new study warns that this may not be the case at all.
If you are thinking that diet soft drinks or artificial or even natural sweeteners are the answer for getting off sugar, think again. Diet Coke was first introduced to the market in the US in 1982 and is one of the first in a range of the diet sodas that have subsequently arrived on the market.
One of the most ironic concerns that has emerged more recently is a worrying link between diet soda and weight gain, rather than weight loss. Another unquestionable health concern that is linked to diet soda is tooth decay and enamel erosion. Diet soda has also been linked to concerns about osteoporosis (a medical condition in which bones become brittle and fragile). Caffeine content is yet another reason why diet soda is bad for you.В  Worryingly, caffeine like phosphorous can also lead to loss of bone density.


I have gone through cavities, crowns, root canals, bridges, dental implants and an osteopenia diagnosis. With the growing ubiquity of highly processed foods, that contain high sugar, salt and fat content, the idea of being able to enjoy a soda without the adverse consequence of additional weight gain seemed like a dream come true. Since the emergence of diet soda in 1982 there has been an increasing amount of studies, research and articles voicing health concerns. Most of the research into the dangers of diet soda have been quite controversial and issue around diet soda and weight gain is no exception. In particular there has been much concern over caramel coloring (4-MeI) and the artificial sweetener aspartame (also known as Nutrasweet).
Soda has been found to be one of the most corrosive substances that comes into contact with your teeth, and is thought to be responsible for the epidemic in tooth erosion that we are currently seeing, in particular amongst children, whose teeth are much softer than adult teeth. The National Osteoporosis Foundation, points out that phosphate or phosphoric acid is often added to soda drinks and that “Some studies suggest that too much phosphorous can reduce the amount of calcium that the body absorbs”, which can lead to or worsen the symptoms of osteoporosis.
Caffeine has been linked to a number of health concerns, not least of which is that caffeinated diet soda drinks are a particular threat to bone health.


Others are deeply distrustful of the artificial sweeteners they contain -- and there are plenty of scary rumors circulating on the Internet to bolster these suspicions. Two new studies presented recently at the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) Scientific Sessions have linked drinking diet soda to weight gain.
On balance what can be said is that there does seem to be correlation between diet soda and weight gain or obesity. 4-MeI – a particular type of caramel has been found to be a carcinogen (cancer causing agent) and recently, 4-MeI has been found to be present in worryingly high levels in several major brands of soda, both diet and regular. However, most research suggests that if you are drinking diet soda regularly, then you are more statistically likely to be either over weight or gaining weight.
