The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) encourage Americans to add more low-fat and fat-free dairy foods to their family’s diet.
The new guidelines call for families to increase their intake of low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese or yogurt, with a goal of three servings every day for those nine and older.
The USDA visual, the MyPlate icon, is based on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and helps us make a stronger connection between what we put on our plate and in our glass to our overall health. To maintain a healthy weight, Americans need to balance consuming the appropriate number of calories with daily exercise.
Last week, researchers published findings from dietary data collected from thousands of individuals over 40 years, saying that only nine people out of 20,000 ever met the joint guidelines for both sodium and potassium – and even then, only within diets that lacked in other respects.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are revised every five years to reflect the latest scientific evidence around diet and health.
The DGAC have met with criticism from responsible researchers and their own guidelines describe how research is needed. The federal government must have a clear message on diet and nutrition guidelines, then it is up to private industry to deliver good-tasting, healthy and affordable foods, said an executive with The Dannon Co.
Caradec said Americans are consuming only 52% of the recommended amount of dairy foods and beverages.

Caradec told Dairy Foods that he would be speaking today about the importance of private industry participating in public-private partnerships.
In a statement, Ken Lee, director of The Ohio State University Food Innovation Center said, “the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans have real potential to help revolutionize health care and position food as the driver for improving health.
Editor in chief for Dairy Foods, Jim Carper is an experienced business journalist who founded two business-to-business magazines, including one for food and beverage executives. Representatives from the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) told USDA and HHS officials at a public meeting this week it is crucial that any dietary guidelines maintain an emphasis on the importance of consuming three servings of dairy a day.
IDFA, along with the public, was encouraged to provide written and oral comments to the governing bodies regarding recommendations released by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee last month.
Matto said emphasized how dairy companies have made investments to improving the nutrient profile of their products by lowering fat, sugars and sodium. IDFA’s comments also responded to the importance of communicating the dietary recommendations to consumers when they are shopping or planning meals. When the latest guidelines appeared at the beginning of last year, it was clear that most of us could do a lot to improve our diets. For sodium, the recommendation is an upper limit of 2,300mg, with a lower limit of 1,500mg for those considered at risk of heart disease. Certainly alongside questions of feasibility, this should sound alarm bells about making recommendations for single nutrients without whole-diet context.Research is underway that will influence the shape of the 2015 version of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Dannon is the lead sponsor of the event.Other sponsors are Abbott Nutrition, the National Dairy Council and the Institute of Food Technologists. Department of Health and Human Services, this science-based report found that 85 percent of Americans are falling short of the current dairy recommendations.
Nutrient-dense dairy foods deliver three of the four nutrients that Americans lack of on a daily basis: calcium, potassium and Vitamin D.
