Some low-GI and low-carb fruits can be effective in taking the edge off of a carb-craving attack. Scientific studies have shown that sleep deprivation (typically, less than seven hours per night for most healthy individuals) can contribute to a craving for sugary foods and carbohydrates.
It’s not always clear if a dip in your mood is the excuse for your recent junk food binge, or if it’s the other way around, but one specific nutrient — chromium — is often behind your cravings.
One double-blind study of 42 overweight women found that chromium supplementation reduced food intake, hunger levels and fat cravings, leading to a lower body weight. It’s hard to estimate exact amounts of chromium in foods because it can vary based on minerals in the soil they were grown in, but adding some of the ones known to be good sources of the mineral to your diet is another way to up your intake. Done together with a program that incorporates plenty of protein, healthy fats, low-glycemic carbohydrates, mindful meditationВ and plenty of exercise, you will find your mood lift and your cravings diminish. Many individuals also suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which means they might become more depressed in the winter; depression, consequently, has been shown to cause an increase of the desire for comfort foods in affected individuals due to the aforementioned decrease in serotonin levels. In fact, some researchers now recommend that mental health professionals recognize carbohydrate cravings as a possible sign of a more serious underlying medical condition, like atypical depression.
