I discovered Mickey’s blog when I first began following the autoimmune protocol (AIP) and found her e-book so helpful that I immediately started recommending it to others and promoting it here on my blog.

The autoimmune protocol is an elimination diet specifically for those with autoimmunity that removes grains, beans, legumes, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, and nightshade spices.
The best changes for me were the reversal of any autoimmune symptoms, but this does not happen for everyone all at once. Mickey helpfully includes icons at the top of each recipe that shows at a glance the tools you’ll need, how much time it will take, and a difficulty rating.

While she herself eats a diet of real food (aka a paleo diet), some people may find that they can flourish on a vegetarian diet instead. Mickey took time out of her busy schedule (on her book tour) to chat with us about the protocol and give us some tips on trying it out for ourselves.
I used the autoimmune protocol to heal from a multitude of issues, mainly Celiac and Hashimoto’s disease (you can read my story here).
They are not included because science has shown them to be either highly allergenic foods, or irritating to leaky gut, which has been found in all autoimmune diseases. I developed this pate recipe that is palatable with the addition of bacon and lots of herbs. E-books are useful and all but there is nothing quite so satisfying and inspiring as paging through a lovely cookbook, especially when you know that every single recipe is compatible with your healing diet.

The result is, I’ve been following a diet that is essentially the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP), which is basically a diet that is free of gluten, grains, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, nightshades, and of course food additives and chemicals (like thickeners, sweeteners, and colorants). I came across the autoimmune protocol after about 12 months of diet experimentation to deal with adrenal fatigue and autoimmune illness. This hardcover book outlines the premise of the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol, lists the foods to avoid, and more importantly, the foods to include, along with a basic how-to in re-introducing the foods you end up eliminating at first. Really, it’s an invaluable resource to anyone who has autoimmune or inflammation issues. But it is a cookbook after all, and I’m happy to report that the recipes are not only beautifully photographed (which I think is really important in any good cookbook), but the instructions are clear and easy to follow.
