There is no cure for Glut1, which affects just 25 people in the UK, but children can be helped with a special diet called the Ketogenic Diet. Symptoms of Glut1 Defiency Syndrome can be alleviated by the Ketogenic Diet which is high in fat and very low in carbohydrates.
This causes the brain to be starved of energy which can result in a variety of symptoms.Most, but not all, patients develop seizures within the first few months of life.
The diet is so precise that children on it must avoid even topical ingredients a€“ such as medications or toothpastes a€“ that might contain sugar. Ketone levels must be regularly checked because if they are too high a patient may go into a coma. Field's parents are now hoping that, thanks to the diet, her condition will improve even further. They went to a Glut1 conference in America last week and there were children there that were walking.
