The post RB106: (CWRP #01) Healthy Living in the Real World with Tony Scarborough appeared first on Rebooted Body.
Tony Scarborough was the first ever guest on Rebooted Body, all the back on RB001 in April 2013.
And those challenges are precisely why I invited him to be the first ever in-studio guest---to talk about healthy living in the real world. Last week I did some equipment upgrades which also gave me the capability of having an in-studio guest (versus recording everything over Skype). Not only do we talk about the challenges that Tony has faced (so you can hear how he has worked to overcome them), we talk about the politics of health and how to win even though the deck is stacked against you. While gluten gets all the attention these days, a potentially more problematic group of foods is creeping into our bodies and wreaking havoc. This is a continuation of our exploration of the concepts of movement as medicine and movement nutrition.

For the past few weeks I've been seeing photos of pink Starbucks drinks filling up my Instagram feed. They are called the "Pink Drink" and you won't find them listed on their regular menus, as they exist on Starbucksa€™ famous secret menu.
To me, the drink looks delicious and ita€™s said to taste like a strawberry milk tea and yes I do want one.
If you decided to order it too, just ask for the "Pink Drink." If the barista looks at you weird, then just ask for the Strawberry Acai Refresher with coconut milk instead of water and berries. The lucky person chosen for the job will, of course, have to be able to rate and review the best bacon brands out there -- as well as keep an eye on how bacon is used in both breakfast and brunch foods, as well as its overall impact on culture. As you can see, it looks amazing on chicken wings (which I did a few weeks ago) so I tried it on ribs this weekend. Self cleaning ovens are fantastic, but if youa€™ve got one and youa€™ve used it (or youa€™ve moved into a home where the appliances were included), you might have discovered that your oven racks are tough to slide. So herea€™s the tip: if youa€™re going to use the self cleaning function, remove your oven racks first.
We' ve used the hamburger, potato, onion, carrot, seasonings, & butter ingredients as a rule. For the dressing: Whisk together sour cream, buttermilk, vinegar, mayonnaise, sugar, lime juice and zest, cilantro, garlic, cumin, and black pepper in a small bowl. I brought up the dilemma on the air and got several suggestions, all of which involved beating my grill to some degree. I bought this fuel gauge last summer, because I was tired of running out of gas half-way thru dinner.
This was perfect timing as I wanted to try out some flavored brats from Ski's Meat Market in Green Bay.
It's been a while since I had a first date, but I knew some of these foods shouldn't be consumed when you're trying to make a good first impression.
Nutritional values listed may vary from final results depending on actual measurements, products and brands used to prepare the recipe.
In 4-cup glass measure, stir together vinegar, water, oil, brown sugar, salt, red pepper flakes and cayenne pepper until salt is dissolved.

Prepare medium-hot fire; grill ribs over indirect heat for 50 to 60 minutes or until pork is tender and the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F.
Nothing ruins a great grilling experience like your meat (or veggies or whatever) sticking to the grate. Temperature is the key a€“ not only of the grilla€¦heat up that baby so the grates are properly pre-heated to seara€¦but also of the meat. So herea€™s the deal, if you want to achieve grill marks like a champ, forget cooking sprays.
Cut a potato in halfa€¦stick a fork in ita€¦rub the potato on the heated grill gratesa€¦enjoy your grill marks. My nephew was coming over this weekend so we could play LEGO Dimensions together, and the rest of the family was coming with, so I made a batch of ribs! I had also come across a different method for smoking the ribs, so I tried that at the same time and the results were delicious! To go along with the theme of Sweet Pecan, I used maple syrup to get the ribs sticky to hold the rub better (see fig. I was actually going to take them out after the two hours covered and throw a little glaze on and finish them on the grill, but it was windy and cold and my grill wouldn't stay lit. A has paid to sponsor this blog post and provided me with a rack of ribs and the pecan rub for the purpose of mentioning it in this article.
Mix all ingredients together in a saucepan, bringA to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until butter is melted.
Instructions: Combine olive oil, cider vinegar and sugar in a saucepan, bring to a boil, remove from heat, and cool to room temperature. Stir pinto beans, black-eyed peas, corn, onion, red bell pepper, and green chilies together in a large bowl. Sun dried tomatoes and canned or bottled tomato products (such as tomato paste, sauce, soups, juice, ketchup, and tomato based chili or hot sauces) are all concentrated sources of lycopene. Other produce rich in lycopenes (think deep red or pink) include watermelon (which actually contains more lycopene than tomatoes!), purple grapes, pink or red grapefruit, apricots, plums, red bell peppers, papaya, and guava. Next on the grocery list are foods rich in betacarotene, another antioxidant that has natural sunscreen properties.
Other betacarotene rich foods include sweet potatoes, apricots, squash, pumpkins, papaya, and mango (think deep orange pigment). Looking for more foods providing sun protection?  Eat some walnuts, which are high in essential fatty acids, which may also protect against sunburn. Finally, look to foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which is a natural anti-inflammatory that may also protect against sunburn and cellular damage that can lead to skin cancer. So if you are heading out in the sun, why not have a glass of orange juice and grapefruit topped with strawberries for breakfast, a leafy green spinach salad with mushrooms and tomato juice for lunch, almonds or walnuts for a snack, and salmon with kale for dinner? Pediatrician, parenting and child wellness expert, author of a children's book promoting healthy eating, and mom to William. Sloppy Joe's are a perennial childhood favorite, but the canned version lacks depth of flavor. This recipe is versatile, and can be made into a sloppy Joe stew or soup; see notes for these instructions. This is a topic near and dear to me, as I want to see all our families succeed on the Healthy Kids Program.
For us to exert the significant effort required to achieve our goals they must be compelling; we must truly believe they are worth the time and effort. We are forty-two percent more likely to achieve a goal if we write it down.  So, write it down to make it happen!
Christmas is the perfect time for gratitude, and it is something we can actively promote in our children.
A study on the impact of gratitude published in the Journal of School Psychology looked at more than 200 middle school students, and found that those students that wrote down five things they were grateful for each day for two weeks had higher levels of optimism, increased life satisfaction, and decreased negative feelings. Because children learn best by observation and repetition, an attitude of gratitude can start with YOU!
For kids, the weeks leading up to Christmas is often about focusing on what they want and don’t have. Turkey Pot Pie Is A Great Thanksgiving Leftover, But Chicken Pot Pie Is Good Comfort Food, Too!
And since this recipe was originally for chicken pot pie, you can make a  chicken pot pie the rest of the year by simply substituting 3 cups of cooked chicken for the turkey. This includes a recipe link for a homemade crust that is flaky and easy, but you can use refrigerated pie crust, or biscuits for topping. Now that food-focused holidays are fast approaching, here are some tips for helping picky eaters and reducing mealtime stress.
Be sure there are one or two items on the table that your child will enjoy, but do not cater to the picky eater (this could be bread and butter, milk, corn, etc.). If the thought of eating with all the grownups overwhelms your child, consider a kiddie table, but do not feed children before the big meal or serve them different food.
A great way to encourage children to enjoy the meal is to have them help prepare for the meal.
A child that comes to the holiday table hungry (but not starving) is more likely to eat, so don't overdo the appitizers. While we normally recommend that children take one bite of all new foods served, avoid this at holiday meals. It's best described as the intersection of real food, functional movement, and psychology. The shame and guilt that people experience alongside their overeating challenge is massive and paralyzing. As these diets continue to rise in popularity, so does the number of people experiencing many of the potentially negative side effects.
I’ve also offered a lot of insight as to why you might still be struggling with sugar cravings, despite your best efforts to break free.
We currently have clients in over 26 countries around the world and many of them have told us point blank that this is the best investment theya€™ve ever made in themselves. I didn't realize the drinks were a new fad until I took the time to stop and check some of the pictures out. Youa€™ve likely chalked it up to old age or a€?natural wear and tear,a€? but the likely culprit is the self cleaning oven cycle. Over time, and sometimes after just a single time, ita€™s not merely the shine that is impacted a€“ the racks become difficult to slide. A I pulled it out after about 4 hours and then let is sit wrapped in foil for about 30 minutes before carving. Or if you don't have a salad spinner, transfer vegetables to a large baking sheet (with a rim) lined with a triple layer of paper towels. A The igniter switch has been working (you can hear it clicking), but although you can smell gas, it will not stay lit. Stir the fruit mixture to help the juice start to form, then add sugar, about 1 cup at a time, stirring constantly until sugar is dissolved and the juice is starting to simmer.

Meat straight from the fridge is more likely to stick than room temperature meat because the cool surface of the meat will chill the grates.
Though it will work in the moment, those little droplets are crazy flammable, resulting in dangerous flare-ups and, more importantly, a barrier that builds up over time and actually makes your grill grates MORE sticky.
Ita€™s serves a dual purpose a€“ youa€™ll clean the surface while your treat the surface (though dona€™t rely solely on the spud a€“ you should always clean your grill grates). A Jeff told me to take a sharp knife blade side up and score the membrane down the middle as it's easier to get underneath from the middle than from the side. Dip shrimp in the corn flour, coat well, and place into hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
While it is not recommended that you replace traditional sunblock with these foods, consuming them will likely offer additional protection and reduce sun damage for you and your family—all while tasting great. But fresh tomatoes such as in homemade salsa, gazpacho, or tomato salad still offer a respectable dose of good-for-your-skin lycopene.
You can also find betacarotene in non-orange foods, like mustard greens, turnip greens, collard greens, beets, beet greens, cabbage, kale, and spinach. In addition to vitamin C, cherries contain melatonin, which protects skin from UV radiation and repairs sunburn damage. Mushrooms (especially cremini) contain the mineral selenium, essential for the production of glutathione peroxidase.
In addition to being great sources for essential nutrients, these foods will provide a healthy dose of natural sun protection and skin regeneration.
These get their added oomph by the use of a classic French mirepoix (onions, carrots and celery). Even better: if the goal can be chunked into smaller successes, list them and then cross out as they are accomplished.
A maximum of five to seven goals are ideal (psychology tells us we focus best on this number or less). Even if a list was made, but not a daily reminder, this puts us at a disadvantage for reaching our goals.
And gratitude is not only polite and appreciated, it turns out it is good for our emotional health; our very heart and soul! Even three weeks after they had stopped writing items down, the group of kids that expressed gratitude was more grateful than the control group that did not. But during the holidays, do try to spend time focusing with your child on what he or she already has to counter balance this. If using a commercially prepared pie crust, look for a brand without trans or hydrogenated fats.
The worst aspect of this discussion was that I felt people were being dismissive of an infographic that was making some very relevant points. I also gave clear examples of how perfectionism is destructive to your health and happiness.
This is why I’ve dedicated much of my work to the psychology of behavior modification.
You wona€™t be able to restore that showroom shine, but rubbing wax paper or glycerine soap or a very thin layer of vegetable oil over the racks and the tracks should help to make those racks slide like new again. A As a precaution, I also did what one listener suggested and rapped the regulator with the handle of a screwdriver a couple of times. Turn heat up to medium-high, bring the mixture to a full rolling boil, and cook and stir for about 1 minute. Run a knife around the insides of the jars after they have been filled to remove any air bubbles. Once they are cooled, press the top of each lid with a finger, making sure that the seal is tight. BUT, if you order it without them offering it, you seem high-maintenance (pretty expensive) and it's not the most attractive thing to eat. Add remaining marinade to ribs; seal bag and marinate for 4 to 6 hours in the refrigerator. There are countless effective methods of prevention, but often the side effects of achieving perfect grill marks are detrimental to your grilla€™s long-term health. Eventually the grates will heat enough to sear off the meat, but ita€™s often too late for your steak a€“ overdone. A Two hours with smoke, two hours covered, and a final hour uncovered to tighten them up a bit.
Do not overcook as the meat will continue to cook in the sauce and we don’t want it to get tough. If you prefer, you can puree the sauce, but make the following changes: Cut the carrots and celery in larger pieces. And research presented at the American Psychological Association's 120th Annual Convention found that grateful teens are more likely to be happy, less likely to abuse alcohol and drugs, and less likely to have behavioral problems at school, compared with less grateful teens.
Leaving your child a written note on the refrigerator is another great way to reinforce being thankful. This allows your child to enjoy the family celebration, instead of worrying about the meal. But we also understand that there are things you just can’t get from food anymore due to our modern environment.
Don'tA justA listen to the podcast---there's so much more available for you so come dive in!
If you’re looking for a fast, 20 minute fat burning workout to start adding in one to two times a week, Tabata sprinting is our top recommendation.
A Then I put them on the grill, added the sauce and tightened them up for about 10 minutes. A I scored the fat cap, hit it with some yellow mustard, and used a commercial rub this time - Bad Byron's Butt Rub. Let stand 5 minutes, then transfer to a large colander and rinse thoroughly under cold running water.
Pour in more water if needed to make sure that water level is at least 1 inch above the tops of the jars.
Limes, also high in vitamin C, can cause the skin to burn more, so be sure to limit exposure to lime juice or peels when heading out in to the sun.
You could add cayenne pepper (to taste), Tabasco sauce or up to 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar for a kick.
Cook the meat first (spray with nonstick spray as there will be no oil in the pan from sautéing the veggies) then remove.
Why not have your children tell you before bed something that they were grateful for that day, or some act of kindness they saw someone else do?
The evolutionary use for depression and some key takeaways about the root cause of depression.
A I've always been a regular brat man and I cook them in a crock pot with beer and onions and then brown them on the grill. It’s establishing this habit when they are young that will most likely result in an adult with an attitude of gratitude that shines.

Remove lid, bring to a moderate simmer and cook until reduced to desired thickness, another 10 minutes or so, stirring occasionally. Puree the vegetables with an immersion blender (or in a blender, but be sure to use a kitchen towel on the lid and leave a vent for the steam to escape). A Note: I had rubbed the ribs the night before and let them sit in the fridge until I was ready to place them in the smoker.
