Identifying which foods contain these things can be confusing, however in this article, there are several charts which list the best weight gaining foods to eat on top (superior), followed by good, inferior and no-no. Include in your diet high protein foods such as fish (tuna and salmon), whey protein powder (for post workout shakes and inbetween meals), chicken and turkey breasts, low fat milk, high carbohydrate foods such as pasta, lots of fruit and veg such as avocado and banana, as well as good fats such as olive oil and flaxseed oil. Maybe others have heard this as well, it was recommended that post-workout a whey protein shake should be taken with high-glycemic product, namely, dextrose.
Interestingly, the eating plan of a rookie NRL football player included eating lots of bananas, peanut butter sandwiches, and protein shakes! I have been trying to gain weight and successfuly went from weighing 54kg and I am 5’7 to now weighing 60kg within 5 weeks. I don’t want to become a body builder but just want to gain weight and a perfect figure. Please help me cause I’m trying desperately to gain back my weight without feeling bloated all the time! I had trouble gaining weight when i first started training, i was 12 stone at 6ft 1 now after 2 years hard training and eating i am 15 and a half stone still the same height, i am a hardgainer but by constantly pushing my body to eat more (literally gipping while eating) my appetite grew the more i forced, i now actually feel hungry more than i did before, like my body as adapted to that intake, because i am an hardgainer i eat ANY source of protein or carbs, seen as i dont hold body fat i dont see any problem i still have a 32 inch waist as before, i eat ANY meat and cheese, ANY fish, i eat healthy foods but i also dont hold back with ‘unhealthy’ foods, i have 7 meals a day, 2 as protein shakes, they one i have before bed i have with milk for the slow release protein, i eat alot of peanut butter, and nuts as snacks, some weeks i do eat unhealthy but with work an training the fat doesnt stand a chance to linger, so you lot trying to gain weigh dont look at that list it gives you, yes eat the good foods it says more, but dont be shunned away from the inferior foods as these will definatly help you gain weight, the list on this page seems more for someone who is trying to keep the weight off?
If you are new here, you need to watch this video to better understand the basic principles of gaining weight.
If the meat comes from animals that weren’t pumped full of drugs and given unnatural foods, it is extremely healthy. Beef from cows that ate grass and were allowed to move around, pastured chickens, meat from lambs that got to roam around the countryside… this is what meat is supposed to be like. Much more Conjucated Linoleic Acid (CLA) – which can lower body fat and increase lean mass. Fish is rich in high quality proteins, various essential nutrients and Omega-3 fatty acids, which are excellent for the brain, the heart and various other parts of the body. Omega-3 fatty acids appear to be especially important for mental health and prevention of cardiovascular disease (4). Omega-3?s are very beneficial for depression, which means that eating fish 1-2 times per week may literally make you feel better every single day (5).
Due to pollution of the oceans, some fish may contain contaminants, but their health benefits still far outweigh any potential risk (6). Bottom Line: Fish is very healthy and eating it is associated with a much lower risk of depression, other mental disorders and several chronic diseases. Eating eggs changes your cholesterol from small, dense LDL (bad) to large LDL (good), increases HDL (good) cholesterol and provides the unique antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which are incredibly important for eye health (7).
Eggs are high on the satiety index which means that they are particularly prone to make you feel full and eat less overall calories (8).
A study in 30 overweight and obese women revealed that a breakfast of eggs (compared to a bagel) made them eat less overall calories for up to 36 hours (9).
Bottom Line: Eggs are extremely nutritious and are so fulfilling that they make you eat less overall calories.
Bottom Line: Vegetables are high in fiber, antioxidants and nutrients but very low in calories. Generally considered healthy, fruit has been under some heavy attack recently due to the high fructose content. But fruits are more than just bags of fructose. If you like fruits, eat them, but don’t eat more than 1 piece per day if you need to lose weight as they are still pretty high in carbs.

Includes almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and many others. Nuts and seeds contain a lot of essential nutrients and are particularly high in Vitamin E and magnesium.
Despite a high energy density and being rich in fats, eating nuts is associated with improved insulin sensitivity, lower body weight and improved health (14, 15, 16). Bottom Line: Nuts and seeds are nutritious, healthy and generally associated with improved health. Root vegetables like potatoes and sweet potatoes are healthy, nutritious and very satiating. Many populations around the world have eaten massive amounts of tubers and remained in excellent health (17, 18). However, they are still very high in carbs and prevent the metabolic adaptation required to reap the full benefits of low-carb diets. Bottom Line: If you’re healthy, active and don’t need to lose weight, you can eat tubers like potatoes and sweet potatoes. In a large review study published in 2012, consumption of high-fat dairy was associated with a lower risk of weight gain over time (19). Observational studies from Holland and Australia revealed that those who ate the most high-fat dairy had a much lower risk of cardiovascular disease and death compared to those who ate the least (20, 21). Of course, these observational studies don’t prove that high-fat dairy caused the improvement and not all studies agree on this, but it sure as hell suggests that high-fat dairy products aren’t the villain they’ve been made out to be.
All of this makes the advice of dietitians to choose low-fat dairy products (usually high in sugar) to be very questionable. Bottom Line: High-fat dairy is associated with lower risk of weight gain and a reduction in cardiovascular disease risk in some observational studies. Michelle, now if you could only get your brother to go by your recommended diet he would live a lot longer!! I agree with all of this- but butter and lard I’m not sure I understand the reasoning on.
However, being a diabetic who is very concerned about blood sugar, I will say that I can tolerate potatoes a lot better than I can wheat.
You can do all the weight training you want, but if your are not feeding your body the necessary food and nutrients it requires for maintenance and growth, then it will all be a waste of time, not to mention unhealthy.
I like how simplified these charts are because you can immediately identify what NOT to eat. What I found to be effective is increasing your meal frequency, trying to have 6 meals each day, but not eating as much per meal, making you feel hungrier throughout the day.
When snacking it’s a great time to eat high calorie snacks such as dried fruits, seeds, nuts, low fat yogurt and cheese.
They are extremely healthy with tons of benefits, while you are right they are high in fat, it is good poly and mono unsaturated fat that makes a large benefit to your health, They are high in calories which make them perfect for the individual attempting to gain weight. Swiss and feta are healthier cheeses, but I don’t want to sit around eating it by itself.
I am completely healthy have a good enough body and have no problems maintaining a healthy weight.

That’s pretty contradicting, but either way I believe for sure that peanuts are good for weight gain and muscle building as also proved by several other reliable references.
I now weigh 61kg after a month of eating 2 bananas and a glass of light milk between every meal and having a small dinner of something like a steak on its own before my proper dinner. We have been eating meat for hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of years. Our species thrived eating a combination of animals and plants. It often lookslike meat, but was harvested from animals that ate grains and were pumped full of hormones and antibiotics to make them grow faster. Choosing conventionally raised meat is still a million times better than the standard western diet.
They’re also high in fiber, antioxidants, vitamin c, have a low energy density and are almost impossible to overeat on. Therefore, I suggest eating nuts in moderation if you find yourself constantly snacking on them.
I thought that because of their lack of double bonds they weren’t a good choice- better than margarine or fake stuff, for sure, but how do butter and lard specifically improve your health and help weight loss?
You just need to worry about knowing which proteins, carbohydrates, and fats to eat, otherwise known as good proteins, good carbs, and good fats.
Having less fatty foods will also be of great benefit as fats tend to make you feel fuller more quickly, so you eat less.
You should be looking to incorporate all of these weight gain foods in your diet if you want to gain weight.
But the reason it is recommended pre- or post-workout is that it absorbs into the bloodstream faster, which helps deliver the protein faster as well. Right now all these parts have no muscles and are flat :( Do you guys think a gym can help gaining weight plus perfect body shape or yoga?? Unless you’re training to become a champion body builder, none of this information matters! That’s why I dedicated an entire post to Peanut Butter Inspired Muscle Building Recipes. If you can’t afford it, grain-fed meat is still a much better option than the standard western diet. In a nutshell, your weight gaining diet should include high protein foods, high carbohydrate foods and healthy fats.
So feel free to comment a name i can refrence or even better, comment with the APA reference done :). Start off tracking how much you eat and add 300-500 every week when results aren’t seen. Im about to start some serious weight training and get my nutrition and sleep dialed in and put on some serious weight. What im trying to say is if youve been shaking your head wondering why your not able top gain.
