The junk food industry, now under attack by public health advocates and parents, finds itself in a similar position as the tobacco industry in the 1990s. Indeed, despite individual efforts by some states to tax soda pop, require healthier school lunches, or mandate calorie information in chain restaurants, obesity rates in the United States are growing. We need to subsidize healthy organic food, not junk food, and promote sustainable food and farming practices, instead of subsidizing factory farms and chemical-intensive farming and food processing. Studies have shown that school organic gardens, salad bars, and healthy lunches improve the health and academic performance of students. There was a long piece this weekend in the New York Times magazine on the science and marketing of creating junk food, and the role it has played in fueling the rise of obesity in America.
The public and the food companies have known for decades now — or at the very least since this meeting — that sugary, salty, fatty foods are not good for us in the quantities that we consume them.
As a parent who has some responsibility for feeding not only myself but also two children — aww, who am I kidding, my wife calls the shots when it comes to what the kids eat — this was an eye-opening read. Do you know why all your favourite food items including pizzas,  pie, samosas, burgers, beef roll, french fries, rolls and wraps are called ‘junk food? Today, junk food businesses are dominating the food industry to a great extent, with each huge food chain generating huge revenue, creating thousands of employment opportunities and influencing diet globally. Share this empowering narrative on your social network of choice and ask others to do the same. Genetics, age, overall diet, and inactivity are among the converging variables that play a role. So why are the diabetes and obesity and hypertension numbers still spiraling out of control? Well, the dictionary meaning of the word ‘junk’ is useless, extra or something that is not needed. One in every three children born since the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. We need to teach children and adults alike to eat less meat and fatty foods and instead to increase their consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and home-cooked meals. Our industry has taken important steps to encourage a healthy balance between calorie intake and physical activity. It’s not just a matter of poor willpower on the part of the consumer and a give-the-people-what-they-want attitude on the part of the food manufacturers. And all these fast food items that have invaded every nook and crannies of our country are called junk because they completely justify this meaning. The consequences that these junk food can have on your health are terrible, regardless of whether you have them once in a while, twice in a week or every day. Have a look at how these junk food play a crucial role in deteriorating your health.
Forty percent of American meals are now purchased and consumed outside the home, typically consisting of high-calorie, low-nutrition items such as soft drinks, French fries, and low-grade meat, laced with fat, cheap sweeteners, pesticide residues, chemical additives, and salt.
Diet-related obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are now the nation’s number one public health problem, generating an estimated $150 billion in health care costs every year. For example, we instituted national School Beverage Guidelines, swapping full-calorie soft drinks for low-calorie options in smaller portion sizes. What I found, over four years of research and reporting, was a conscious effort — taking place in labs and marketing meetings and grocery-store aisles — to get people hooked on foods that are convenient and inexpensive.


Millions of youth and adults have literally become addicted to the chemically enhanced junk food served in fast food restaurants, school lunchrooms, and institutional cafeterias. As a result, the number of beverage calories shipped to schools across the country has declined by a whopping 90%. We have also led the way on clear calorie labeling so that consumers of all ages can make informed choices.
Some were willing whistle-blowers, while others spoke reluctantly when presented with some of the thousands of pages of secret memos that I obtained from inside the food industry’s operations.
Through education-based efforts, we believe Americans will increasingly embrace healthier habits, which includes a balanced diet and physical activity. What follows is a series of small case studies of a handful of characters whose work then, and perspective now, sheds light on how the foods are created and sold to people who, while not powerless, are extremely vulnerable to the intensity of these companies’ industrial formulations and selling campaigns.
This approach is capable of changing behaviors that add up to long-term health benefits in a way that regulation simply cannot.
