Six division titles, seven playoff appearances, and two World Series appearances with one trophy in a highly unlikely year make the St. Having said that, the Cardinals of the 2000s have reaped the benefits from having Gandalf as their pitching coach and a front office that is willing to spend but does so in a sensible and realistic manner, supporting their core strengths. I was totally prepared to put him on here based solely off his two run home runs off Aaron Heilman in the ninth inning of the 2006 NLCS, but Molina has continually strengthened his case both offensively and defensively since that defining moment.
The Cardinals have mostly employed the stereotypical second baseman: fast, average hitter, strong defender. Rolen manned the hot corner for five years as a Cardinal, and turned in three seasons of quality production. Ludwick has only started the past two years, but he put up better numbers than So Taguchi, Larry Walker, Juan Encarnacion, Reggie Sanders and every other journeyman the Cardinals threw into one of the corner spots. He started eight years in center field for the Cardinals and made highlight catches throughout each of them. Glaus only played one full season for the Cardinals, but managed to hit 27 home runs and knock in 99 runs while batting .270, which was his best average since 2000.

The following are the five reasons I think the Cardinals will ultimately come up short in the quest for their first Super Bowl title.
Apparently, former San Francisco Giants closer and current Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Brian Wilson likes vintage handguns – or at least the look of the popular collector item. Wilson, who re-signed with the Dodgers this past offseason recently tweeted out a drawing (via his Instagram) which featured Marilyn Monroe holding two revolvers. The drawing (which seemingly was done by Wilson himself) must have inspired the eccentric pitcher as he decided to get a new gun tattoo on his hand.
TMZ captured the impressive work as Wilson was leaving a tattoo parlor in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday. Despite being the staff ace, there was never any thought by the Rangers of having Cliff Lee pitch three games in the World Series. If I was writing this column in 1970 or even in 1990, it would be about Cliff Lee’s preparation to start game four of the World Series for a Texas Rangers squad that trails two games to one and desperately needs a strong performance from their best pitcher. However, because we are in the year 2010 when pitchers are often treated like fine china, this column is about how the Rangers must figure out how to win three more games though their staff ace will pitch just one more time in the series.
What is interesting about the decision by Ron Washington to pitch Tommy Hunter in game four, instead of to start Cliff Lee on three day’s rest, is that it really isn’t a decision at all. Given that Lee struggled in the first game with a week of rest, it makes sense not to take a chance bringing him back early.
Of course the same would be true for the San Francisco Giants, but even with consecutive Cy Young Awards to his credit, there has never been discussion about maneuvering their rotation to get a third start out of Tim Lincecum.
What is interesting about the situation for the Rangers is that just a year ago, Lee and his previous team the Philadelphia Phillies were in the same exact situation.
Trailing two games to one against the Yankees, Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel did not start Lee in game four though the Yankees were pitching their ace C.C.
Prior to Sabathia a year ago, the last pitcher to start both games one and four in a World Series was Curt Schilling for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001.
In the era before five-man pitching rotations became standard, it was common for teams to regularly go with three-man rotations in the playoffs to ensure that their ace could pitch three times in a seven game series.
On short rest, Jack Morris pitched 10 shutout innings in game seven of the 1991 World Series. In the 1991 World Series, Jack Morris of the Minnesota Twins pitched games 1, 4 and 7 to lead Minnesota to victory.
The Twins were the beneficiary of another three-game starter in 1987 when Frank Viola won games one and seven, but lost game four.
Having an ace pitch three times in a Series has never been a guarantee of victory in every game, but over history has typically given teams a chance to keep their other pitchers available for relief while ensuring their best pitcher was getting maximum chances.
That seemed to be the case for the Cardinals in 1985 when staff ace John Tudor allowed only one run in 15.2 innings in winning games one and four. With him on the mound in game seven, many expected the Cardinals to cruise past the Kansas City Royals. Nearly two decades earlier, the Cardinals used the same strategy in consecutive World Series with slightly different outcomes. If Texas is to win the 2010 World Series it will take standout pitching by more hurlers than just their staff ace.

Louis Cardinals could not hold serve at home in the World Series, losing two out of three games at Busch Stadium. The last three teams to be trailing 3-2 in the World Series best-of-seven format have come back to win it all.
Louis Cardinals are projected to see John Lackey on the mound game six, and Jake Peavy game seven, if necessary.
Both teams have thrown away games, and managers John Farrell and Mike Matheny have made questionable and brilliant decisions at integral points during the series. Louis Cardinals looks on from the dugout in the first inning during Game Six of the MLB World Series against the Texas Rangers at Busch Stadium on October 27, 2011 in St Louis, Missouri.
At 9-1, they currently have the league’s best record, own first place in what was thought to be the toughest division in football and have won six straight games. Head coach Bruce Arians has done a wonderful job keeping his Arizona team together, but there are too many flaws for it to really be considered an elite force capable of winning a title. I every interview from prior to the World Series through game three, Washington never wavered in his insistence that Lee would not pitch a day earlier than normal regardless of the situation in the Series. However, the decision means that should the Series come down to one final game, the Rangers would not be pitching their staff ace. In fact, Schilling started games one, four and seven and pitched into the eighth inning in all three games as the Diamondbacks won the Series over the Yankees. However, just four days after shutting out the Royals in a 3-0 shutout victory, Tudor allowed five runs before being knocked out in the third inning. In 1967, Bob Gibson pitched complete game victories in games 1, 4 and seven to lift the Cardinals past the Boston Red Sox.
He won games one and four with complete games, but in game seven lost a pitcher’s duel 4-1 to Mickey Lolich.
They got a good start with the performance of Colby Lewis in game three, but others will have to shine if they are to bring home the title in 2010.

The Boston Red Sox lead three games to two heading back to Fenway Park for games six and seven.
The Cards’ two wins came against Lackey and Peavy, but the offense had little success against the former. Jon Lester pitched 15+ innings of one run ball, and long reliever Felix Doubront has shut down the Cards twice through five games in relief.
Matheny has chosen to pitch to David Ortiz, who is hitting a robust .733 and has had key hits in three games. Can they take some of the magic from 2011 on the road to force the best spectacle in all of sports? The franchise that boasts the second most World Series championships in baseball only to the New York Yankees also had the advantage of having the same manager throughout the decade and a lineup that features the best overall player on the planet. He won the Cy Young in 2005 and then, after pitching two games in two years, led the league in winning percentage and ERA, recording a 1.00 WHIP in 2009. On the surface it looks like they should be the favorites to not only reach, but win Super Bowl XLIX, which, incidentally, will be played in their home stadium.
His fellow starter on that night was John Smoltz of the Braves, who had not pitched in the Series until game four, but pitched seven scoreless innings in game seven also on three days rest after having battled Morris in game four. It was Bret Saberhagen, who had started game three for the Royals and was pitching on regular rest, that was the pitching star of the finale.
Interestingly, his pitching counterpart in game seven, Jim Lonborg, was actually pitching on two days rest having pitched complete game victories in games two and five. Interestingly, like Lonborg a year earlier, Lolich had earned complete game victories in games two and five before pitching on just two days rest. With right-handed hitting staples such as Yadier Molina, Matt Holliday, Allen Craig, and switch-hitting Carlos Beltran, it is shocking that St. Matheny has also chosen to let regular season darlings Shelby Miller and Edward Mujica rot in the St. He did not last five innings and needed to pitch well with games on three consecutive nights.
He was the only constant in a rotation that rarely featured the same five guys year to year.
However, unlike Lonborg, Lolich was able to toss a complete game in the final game and defeat Gibson and the Cardinals. Miller was easily their second best starting pitcher, and Mujica was their closer once Jason Motte was lost for the season. He was a solid starter for most of his career, and was heavily embraced by the Cardinal faithful.
